From my understanding, the reason Cell couldn’t absorb 16 is because 16 is made of pure metal. 17 and 18 were originally humans with flesh, blood, and organs, but Gero experimented on them. So technically 17 and 18 are Cyborgs and 16 is an Android

Chels got it right. Cell can only absorb living things and he was made specifically to absorb 17 & 18 who were both originally humans engineered and turned into Androids while 16 is a pure no flesh robot.

Essentially the confusion is boiled down from the fact that there was a mistranslation when it came to 17 and 18 as originally in the japanese sub they were known as Cyborgs 17 and 18 but apparently the japanese for it can mistranslate to Android or something like that. Which is why on some japanese figures of the duo they'll be called C17 and C18

In Japanese it's jinzo-ningen (artificial humans), which can be used both for cyborgs and androids. As the first ones to appear in the series were mostly mechanical, they only used "android" and had to keep the designation.

The reason why Cell can't drink 16 is because cell absorbs living tissues, 16 is fully robotic, thus "pure metal". 18 and 17 are Humans augmented with technology. 17 and 18 are Cyborgs. 16 is an Android.

17 and 18 are cyborgs, so they are still organic, just augmented, whereas 16 is an android, purely mechanical. It was a mistake in the english dub that led to them being called androids and Cell cannot consume 16 because of his lack of organic tissue. TFS mentions it a couple times in passing throughout the arc.

I will try to explain , hoping to clarify the confusion. Cell tail has 2 functions. The first one is to absorb organic substances. He did it with the humans, he did it when he drink Piccolo's Arm and he tried with Android 16. This is what makes him stronger. The reason he couldn't do it with 16 it's because Android 16 is really an Android, this is why Cell said: Errors have been made. You see in japanese, the word for cyborgs and androids is the same, Jinzoningen means just artificial human and there is no distinction between cyborg and android. With the english translation, they went with Androids for all of them, (in italian instead they used cyborgs for whatever reason), but anyway , 17 and 18 are Cyborgs, they are normal people that Gero experimented on and put some machinery into them to give them an infinite supply of energy and other mechanical parts. 16 instead is purely machinery , so Cell tail has nothing to drink (maybe some oil or stuff like that lol) The second function of Cell is to absorb 17 and 18 in order to achieve his perfect form. Gero designed Cell to be able to integrate the circuits and whatever parts he implanted into the twins in order for him to evolve. Absorbing one of them allowed him to reach the status of Semi Perfect Cell.

Cell couldn’t absorb 16 but could 17 and 18 because 17 and 18 are cyborgs - half human and half machine - whereas 16 is 100% robot, hence why he put emphasis on *Android* 16 when Cell asked him if he was pure metal lol.

Two reasons for Cell being unable to drink 16 and succeeded with 17. First of, no organic material in 16 in contrast with 17 and 18. Second one is that Cell used a different methode. Trying to suck him dry instead of swallowing him whole. Not that that would have done him any good if he had tried swallowing 16.

Brief is the doctor's name, in Dragon Ball it's a plot point that people in big cities don't have family name, only old fashioned people living countryside, like Goku. Yeah, I know the dub made it a surname, but it's wrong and I hope Funimation drops it in the future.

29:04 17 & 18 are actually cyborgs, “android” was actually translation error.. so they should be called Cyborg 17 & 18. While Android 16 is indeed an android. That’s why Cell couldn’t absorb 16. (Cyborg = part human/part robot & Android = all robot) Also Cell was made with the distinct purpose of absorbing 17 & 18, that’s why he transforms upon absorbing them specifically. While everyone else he absorbs just gives him a boost in power and his appearance remains the same.

17 and 18 are cyborgs, not really androids (Cell even called them cyborgs at the beginning if you recall), part human, part robot. 16 is a true android, fully robot, that is why Cell could not eat 16.

He couldn't absorb 16 because, as he re-estated - he is ANDROID 16. While the other 2 are cyborgs. Androids are pure machines. Cyborgs are enhanced HUMANS and they did hint at that, with jokes when Cell told Picolo that they are wrong to call androids "androids" cause they are cyborgs. They also hinted at it during first Trunks visit.

I think the anime and manga never explained why Cell has to absorb 17 and 18. Just said Cell had to in order to get his perfect form. I like to think Android 17 and 18 would function like batteries that Cell consumes energy from to mantain his Perfect Form, cuz in the end 17 and 18 have infinite energy and stamina.

cell was designed to absorb them and thus incorporate its previous iterations (androids which are actually cyborgs). absorbing 18 transforms him and absorbing 17 with transform him again to his final form. cell can absorb any biological being and gain more power but only absorbing the 2 specific androids (cyborgs) will give him the extreme power boosts and transformations

Dragon Ball don't have the sexual conotations in Japanese, so maybe Toriyama didn't thought about that. But then Z was added for the anime (the manga is simply "Dragon Ball" from the beginning to end) and Toriyama was the one that pitched it in, so maybe? xD

Yamcha is the main jobber of Dragon Ball (though he gradually loses that title to Piccolo and Vegeta in late Z since none of the humans can convincingly do it anymore). However he's out of commission for most of Z, so Krillen is the main one who gets shit on until Yamcha is back (Krillen has always jobbed on any arc Yamcha isn't available for).

Piccolo vs 17 is one of the best fights on the anime. They did it dirty 😭 They did ok with 16 vs Cell tho 🤔 Anyway, to me after this point it went slowly downhill but that's just me.
