Hey everyone, Dragonflight is here and it seems to be making an impression on a lot of people. Mike's launch went pretty well considering he was streaming from a castle in the English countryside with no reception, and somehow managed to avoid almost any server issues - unlike my dumbass suck with no world server on Tarren Mill. Mike has spent the last week going deep on the new expansion, and here are his initial impressions from the first week. How did launch go for you?

honestly? didn't go to me. I'm staying clear of WoW until I'm 100% sure they don't do a 180 and fuck it up again, XIV and some other co-op and Single player games for me for now.

@@yaboirairai the pvp players complaining about this are a small loud portion of the player base, flight is one of the coolest moment to moment gameplay loops of all of wow and always has been, removing it or pathfinding it are horrible ideas. Just let people have fun, the WoD-SL pvp before the rep grind unlocks was still terrible and just made the game worse. Imo the biggest mistakes blizzard makes are listening to pvp die hards over 97% of the rest of the community and war mode proves wow players don’t prioritize pvp as the main draw, most don’t even touch it and those who do rarely want honorable fights.

This. I really like that the option exists to spend hours and hours farming keys, for example. I am not personally farming keys for hours, but I love that it's a valid option. Spending lots of time on professions, Cobalt Assembly rings, various world events, all rewarding... So many systems, so little timegates.

I have to imagine dragonriding is going to make it much harder for gathering bots to be worthwhile. Tons of nodes in places inaccessible from the ground, as well as the sheer scale of the zones built for the speed of dragons. If that's part of why they are forcing the new system and not enabling traditional flying, I'm all for it.

So happy to see Preach carry over the lessons learned in FF XIV to WoW. Taking your time, giving a lot more emphasis on enjoying the content at your own pace. I have come back to WoW mostly thanks to you Mike, and I have been enjoying Dragonflight so far. I play 2-3 hours a day so it takes me a while to do stuff but there is definitely a lot to do and that is always good. Just joined a guild to do some raiding and I hope to go back to enjoying the game again like I used to many years ago. Thanks for the video and all the tips.

Thanks for the dragon flying tip. Was able to fly from Brakenhide hollow to the highest peaks in Thaldrazsus without stopping. Think I could of flown forever. Manually flying around the zones is fun when it's new. But after a while it's like F it. Just take a taxi instead and alt-tab

I think it would be kinda cool if you could enable/disable dragonriding on certain mounts. Say Blizz decide to add dragonriding to every single dragon mount in the game. It would be amazing, but its not for everyone, so let people disable it on the mounts if they don't want it.

Some people would say who cares, let be people have fun with it if they want to, but for me there is like a turn-off point like in FFXIV where they just let everything float around and it just looks really goofy and kind of like... like its just random stuff thrown together. @@stylishskater92 I get that, but in FF14's defence, as much as I wish it weren't the case, they make their dungeons EXTREMELY linear. WoW has multiple dungeons and raids where you can hop on your mounts and run from point A to B, and you have alts to level and unlock flying on, so mounts that can't fly are fine cause you'll still use the ground only ones here and there. In FF14 the only account bound unlockables are store bought, (not all store bought ones though which is fucking stupid but regardless) and with being able to play all classes on one character there aren't as many reason to make an alt, and with all dungeons and raids being linear and not designed more openly with mounting available, if you make ground-only mounts no one's gonna use em cause once you unlock flying there's no point. As for dragon riding looking silly on some mounts, I can't think of any dragon mounts that it would look silly on because apart from the wyrm/pandaren dragon models I think Blizz made each type of dragon in the game as a mount with dragon riding on it with animations that work. Unless you mean non-dragon mounts, but they might do different movement mechanics, like in GW2.

I went and collected all the dragon glyphs specifically without handy notes because I LOVE exploration and this is the first wow expac since WoD for me where I actually enjoyed roaming every corner of the map as I leveled. It felt really rewarding.

Agreed. I will not look them up, because when the message pops up in my chat that my dragon senses a glyph nearby, its sometimes really a chase and even maybe a guessing game or "problem solving" if its not in your view anywhere. Like "where could it be"? What would make "sense"? It is really a simple thing, but i plan to collect them all "organically" on the way. Of course, this is not to say whats better or not, the point is to do what is fun for you.

Great tip on how to maintain vigor and dragonride efficiently. I also did vertical slaloms in the air until I noticed going as high as possible then gliding is the best way to traverse. Dragonriding really did add a sense of real world travel feel, great addition to the game.

Love the new direction and hopefully going forward as you mentioned in previous video that the new blood coming in and the idea of having not just expansion chucks might actually make this fun to play again. I know I quite like the Dragon riding and the story so far. hope it continues that way and great content comes out of it all. What I still dislike is the way people just start hammering players because they choose a wrong skill or not geared correctly. I was in the Ruby Life Pools, and the dude just gave it to a guy after we wiped on the first boss because he didn't have skills in a tree that they thought was were they need to be. Then when we stood up for the guy after saying he was first time playing the game and was still learning, proceeded to give it to all of us. I get not all players are like that but from what I gather, the dev's put the talent trees in place to give players a way to test what works for them otherwise they would just give you spells depending on what you choose and had no talent tree. Spoke with them afterwards and gave them some tips and asked if they wanted to quest to see how things worked which they where happy and thankful for, but I sadly seen this several times. If they are using wrong skills or gear don't berate them just ask the question if they need some advice or tips if they refuse well no skin off your back. Just the shear rudeness to some players jeez. My rant done

Yea I discovered bis dragon flying by a misclick and I was like whaaat, it’s so simple it’s kinda weird, but I like that using it correctly rewards you, but the fact that surge forward is so much worse and barrel roll is only good if it’s a short distance and you won’t fly for a while is imho bad, I think surge forward should give a more long term speed boost while descending, and barrel roll should buff vigor regen rate while flying fast for 5 s to make it more usable. The world pvp dismounting is great, and personally I think mounting in mid-air with it costing 1 vigor would make WoW mounted pvp incredibly engaging

TONS of mounts share the same skeleton/rig as the 4 drakes. Most mounts have a soar and flap animation. I don't see why retroactively making certain older mounts work with dragonriding style flying wouldn't be possible. Some mounts make sense to hover still - mimirons head and engi copters for instance

I would love the option to also have ordinary flying for the same exact reason that I suspect Blizzard doesn't want to give it to us - the one thing Dragonriding lacks: Hovering. If I need to urgently leave my PC for something and I'm outdoors I can simply fly into the air and go AFK and be somewhat relatively safe. I assume this is what Blizzard hates and possibly always has hated about (normal) flying. I'd gladly take a new Dragonriding ability that cost 1 vigor and let us "hover" but it would have to be "forever until you move" and not "for 30 seconds" or something that Blizzard would be way more likely to do.

The only thing I miss about not having ordinary flying in DF is the ability to just hover and idle. Be it for either camping something or if I'm flying around looking for something. Being able to just stop in my tracks and scan my surrounding.

I've always thought that people being able to hover safely out of reach of PvP and camping exactly locations high up in the sky was one of the main issues that made them decide to ground us from WoD onwards. And I personally railed on that by arguing that that only happened because they implemented the most braindead form of flying imaginable. By making dragon riding engaging, Blizzard wins with people exploring the zones through learning to fly and actually enjoying it instead of being forced through cramped, mob-infested misery on foot. Players win because they're not being sent through those mob-infested cesspools and get a fast form of travel that's impervious to verticality at the start. The hover-able, auto-run-able derpy flying will return as it always has; you'll just have to endure active flying for a bit instead of enduring travelling by foot through dumb amounts of mobs for that same period.

Made a new character after trying and failing to get into the game in BFA, but I enjoy the new talent tree stuff a lot, currently taking my time lvling through shadowlands. Which doesn't seem so bad tbh, but I do realize it got a ton of QoL stuff near the end. Looking forward to dragon stuff, heavensward was my fav FF expansion for a long time haha.

I got all my glyphs first too, dragon riding is the thing I didn't know I needed. OMG so much fun. I'm so happy with the changes so far, even looking through the quality/level of crafting patterns that some of my characters can make is the kind of thing they never should have taken out of the game. Not everyone has the time or ability to raid but they like to get gear, now they can do that again and not stress about raids.

But i came to a point too many off my addons were outdated and had to delete my wtf folder and reinstall some addons that was working. Would like to remake another one of your proflies cant copy the one from legion anymore and tried the one from shadowlands. It says its a corrupt file.

Glad people are having fun, but I still don't trust the longevity of the product, especially this being hard honeymoon phase. I hope it continues to be a quality product, but it just might not be something I come back to anymore until real change is present.

I feel like a lot of old mounts would probably be able to do dragonflying. The dragonflight mounts are using very common models for a lot of dragon mounts in the game already.

I'll still wait for what feels like an inevitable return to form for the WoW team, where they fuck up the game again. After BfA and Shadowlands, it doesn't feel like that's far away. And as an aside, I just cannot believe that their big expansion-selling feature makes hundreds of mounts obsolete. I don't really care that dragonriding doesn't fit with other mounts. The fact remains that they have let people collect hundreds of mounts over almost two decades, and now those mounts will just be shit for an entire expansion.

Maybe conventional flying won’t die, but rather it’ll just be capped at 310% speed, with dragonriding becoming a core WoW feature in the future. I do hope there’s like a “training” that your old dragon-type mounts can undergo that will convert them into the dragonriding livery. Not every flying mount is rigged with the same animation sets so it will take time for the conversion to be implemented. The least we can ask for immediately is for dragonriding be made available in all zones.
