What do you all think? Deliberate exploit of a game mechanic, or accidental bug? Let us know. Once again huge thanks to all of the folks out there for helping us with the research on this. Big love to Sco from Method, Cloze and Starym from Nihilum and many others who chose not to be named. A shame we couldn't speak to Lewt himself about this so if anyone knows him or if you watch it. Please do get in touch.

Imagine you're in that situation; a boss that nobody in the world has killed. It's on 1hp, you realize you have a soulstone and the ability to instantly do damage. How many of us wouldn't take that shot, either out of pure selfishness or solely because it'd be kinda funny if it worked It's so relatable, and that makes me think it's true.

Only the second of this (so far) short series and loving it. With MMOs, so much is about social structures and relationships, and when you have organizations full of egos, and pile stress and burnout on top of it, competitive "win at all costs" mentality, you're bound to get interesting stuff. I remember hearing about a lot of the guilds and various controversies, but I didn't know about THIS part of the history. I hope you continue to make more as it's really compelling stuff!!

I remember banging my head against a wall with Vashj for months back in the day. SSC was where our guild trimmed the fat, too, as it were. What a nightmare, and it was for like the 1200th kill in the world, too. It had been nerfed to oblivion, and it was still a headache. It was a really good litmus test for who was bad at the game and following directions though. That's the only real positive I remember other than the relief when we finally killed her, and I cursed her so bad my mom wanted to throw hands. Good times. Good video Preach

Of course by the time I ran SSC and TK, BT was out already so the fights were nerfed to a working state, but I remember actually really liking the Kael fight, but hating the Vashj fight, which a lot of people said were similar (I can at least understand why, since both are a bit hectic, at least in those days). I can't imagine how miserable it must have been to be doing them bugged.
@williamgillespieiii2600
@williamgillespieiii2600 10 ай бұрын
@DrewPicklesTheDark honestly I loved it. Especially the clockwork system we worked out for kiting the stupid tank and mage during phase 1 Kael. Shit was wild. Im pretty sure the tanks had to juggle the shield around. Those were the days. We managed to get Server Kael first and there was a huge celebration in Shattrath for us. I found that fight a lot more enjoyable than Vashj cause most of the kinks had been worked through while we were attempting it. Like it wasn't uncommon for the phase 1 tank to just one shot melee for seemingly no reason. Nostalgia is fun. Hyjal and BT felt like a breeze by comparison. But, like preach said, the guild fat had been trimmed by then.

Being a long time player since TBC, even to this day I forget there is a divergent history of WoW between US and EU clients. For instance, early WoW players from Australia were forced to play on US servers before the split into the Oceanic realms that didn't have relative Oceanic latency until late Mists of Pandaria. 200-180ms was the considered average "good" ping for a very long time, some players even becoming used to 500ms and playing accordingly.

The double spawn Lady Vashj is something I had a similar experience with in tBC. My guild was doing Kara and mid-Opera boss (Wizard of Oz one) it bugged out and reset while the Witch was low hp...but she didn't...despawn. Then after a bit the entire thing reset with the original Witch *STILL ACTIVE*. We killed that one, and did the boss again as usual and a second witch spawned. So we indeed got...double loot. Difference for us was that it was 100% unintended and we have 0 clue how we did it or how to recreate it.

Clearly Nihilum should've been open about what happened. Method's kill (while obviously ridiculous to have 25 soulstones) used all in game tactics that did not break the game so yeah...Method won this one. Loving this hope this series keeps going on and on!
@treali
@treali 10 ай бұрын
It seems like Nihilium in the end got the world first, but Method put in a valiant effort. It reduced the incentive for Nihilum to try hard since they already got a kill which basically stopped the race. 25 soulstones is kind of breaking the game. So in the end blame blizzard and we shall go with the guild that actually got a registered kill first. When in doubt go for objective facts.
@UninformedProduction
@UninformedProduction 10 ай бұрын
@@treali objective facts: Nihilium got the world first unfinished encounter bugged kill on Vash, Method got the world first full unbugged encounter kill on Vash. Method did not "kind of break the game," world buffs were allowed in raids, external soulstones were allowed in raids, other guilds were stupid to not do this and I bet if you ask, there's probably other guilds that did do this throughout TBC. Method didn't use bugs, they used creative thinking. Nihilium's kill used a bugged out boss (not on purpose), but it's Nihilium's own fault for not going back and killing Vash in that month without bugging her. You can decide which is more impressive. I've been in the bug situation, hell the last raid before I quit wow was Aberrus in Dragonflight and my guild downed a bugged Mythic Zskarn on a patch day, the patch broke something making the fight a joke for about 3 hours in which we killed the boss, we did not know, but we found out that night and I wanted to reclear as it's a shitty feeling, we didn't deserve the kill, it was such a joke. Looking back, my memories of killing Mythic BFD Janna pre-nerf where we earned that....that's a memory I'll keep forever, bugged Mythic Zskarn, ugh. Nihilium's Vash kill is like finally beating your grandfather in table tennis because you beat him the week he had a broken arm and then for the next month when his arm was healed you couldn't beat him. Yeah objectively you beat your grandfather but did you? Having the feeling of truly earning something you've worked your ass off for is amazing, and what we should demand of the people who claim to be the best, be the best, not be the lucky.

"Exploit Early, Exploit Often" is a common phrase for a reason. While some can sum up the write up as a "disgruntled ex-member," it really puts into question how much exploiting was going on, and how that gave them a SIGNIFICANT advantage over the competition. Nihilum cheated and shouldn't have their name next to Lady Vash, plain and simple.

What a brilliant video. I'm not sure what to make of it. There was a massive exploit during a Dota 2 international with the Pudge Hook/Chen combo. Y'all know what I'm talking about. That was a game mechanic, probably shouldn't have been, but it was skillfully executed and allowed. Immediately patched out after the competition, but I would think it was allowed if I had to vote. I'd like to say this was allowed. Blizzard should probably test things more :P
