michelin man said that his brand was green and then the dragon countered that a single server system would be far greener for roughly 50 users. for some reason michelin man didn't counter that by saying that they also have green servers and instead tried to do the math on using 7 monitors on one of his crappy desktop computers and still came up short in energy and obviously it's going to be like 10x-20x more expensive.

Theo Whatshisname makes a much more valid point shortly afterwards.

If anyone is confused about what his company does it is building pcs from parts that you can get in a computer shop. He uses the least power consuming parts from each manufacturer to build his own pcs. The problem is that the pcs are slower and more expensive as they have to be built by hand. As for the software programmed into the machine, if it actually exists, it's basically forcing Power/Battery Saving mode as the default setting rather than Performance. There are a lot of videos online of people building their own pc like him. It's just that he uses the worst parts from every manufacturer instead of the best parts from every manufacturer and is trying to make money out of it rather than do it as a hobby.

"Some PCs use as much as 200W" says the guy being watched on a KZbin video on a PC with a 1000W power supply. I guess I am at the root of the problem here
@ManicMindTrick8 жыл бұрын
Just because you have a 1000w PSU doesn't mean it draws that amount constantly. It means it can deliver that amount if your components demand it say in a heavy GPU and CPU load exercise like certain games. What matters is the efficiency of the power supply.
@SirPhoenixGaming8 жыл бұрын
+ManicMindTrick Of course, I meant my comment to be ironic, but to be more specific: Average draw is around 300W. Max draw I've seen is 890w. 80+ platinum efficiency, so I assume that it's pretty efficient. But to be fair, this was uploaded 2008 so the technology is a little dated in the fast evolving industry.
@SirPhoenixGaming8 жыл бұрын
+Janoy Cresva I highly doubt that anything more than the power supply was this man's design, if that. It is, and was, possible to make a low powered computer using power efficient parts that still proforms as well as it's more power hungry competitors. I haven't seen the whole presentation, but I assume this is no more than your average off-the-shelf rig with more power efficient parts sold at a premium. From what I could gather from each of these exchanges, you could just buy the parts from PC World yourself, put them together and turn on the power saving feature, and it would be less expensive and more green than a VeryPC. Mind you, this was 10 years ago, and hopefully the company have learned and moved on a lot since this!

Peter Jones proceeded to show off, and had a point, but I disagree that 1 server with 54 terminals is a viable replacement. It behaves differently, it is a different setup, and depending on the type workload, 54 power saving optimized PCs indeed may be more ecological/economical. Furthermore, even suggesting RS232 is, well, embarrassing, and shows me that Peter Jones is not up to date there. RS232 for dumb terminals is super old tech, and only suitable for super simple text-only terminals. That's because UART (the serial interface behind RS232) is VERY slow. The mere thought of driving terminals over UART that show a modern graphical user interface at resolutions 1080p is laughable. It would be an absolutely atrocious slideshow. Even if you let the terminals do the rendering locally (making them not strictly a "dumb" terminal), what are you going to transmit over UART? Files? Read-only boot image loaded from BIOS/UEFI? UART is still far too slow for that. If you talk about terminals, then use Ethernet at the very least. Where Peter Hopton truly doomed himself is for example demonstrated at 6:20, where he tried to BS his way through the tough questions. Good investors smell that crap a mile away, and when they detect it, you better have an amazing product behind all that BS, or you are out.

@6:53 Peter's face is exactly like mine. Theo's question is dead on -- it's off the shelf parts, anyone can build that gear themselves. His parroting about being a revolutionary is a farce. Not to mention that a few years later the Raspberry Pi came out...

Well, over a decade later and they seem to be running a small local computer systems installation firm. Apparently they're just profitable enough to stay in business... They don't claim they have world changing green tech anymore though, for some reason :-)

I think the main reason why the Dragons didn't invest in this guy (aside from the fact that his pitch honestly wasn't that great) was because the UK had a lot of small, independent PC manufacturers in the 1980s and 1990s, only for the likes of Dell, HP and Apple to come in and completely steamroller the independent manufacturers out of existence in the early-mid 2000s. He might have made a success out of it in the end, but there was no guarantee that the big manufacturers wouldn't have just copied his business model (which was essentially just sticking laptop parts in PC cases).

Valuation was completely absurd, that's what it comes down to. He should have asked for maybe £50,000 for a 25% share. Who the **** came up with the £5M valuation?!?! Presumably they were high on the same stuff the guy seems to be on at 0:12 !!!

I just don't understand how it could be more greener than anything else on the market? He isn't making the components himself, he even says its just off the shelf stuff put in a cheap case. Some of the promises he made Apple don't even get and they manufacture there own hardware and software to try and give it the best energy ratings in the industry lol.

He got the valuation over, they are only off the shelf parts, so he's a builder not an OEM, but apart from that there's nothing here which explains why they were so very rude. My guess is he did or said something you can't see in this film and it pissed them all off. It's dominoes too. Peter started laying into him and the others just joined in. He's still in business, you can Google for them, and there's articles online saying he went on to £1,500,000 per year straight after this was filmed. Even if he isn't an OEM, there's nothing stopping the business specialising in low wattage components. I'm not usually charitable but in this case I don't see what the fuss was about that kicked off all the abuse.

They company is worth around £200,000 even all these years later. There's a big difference between turnover and net profit. He has done OK but only OK. The valuation he gave was completely mental. The money he asked for was far too much. None of them would have made any money on this investment. They knew it. He knew it. Plus when questioned, he actually had nothing to back up any of his claims and kept saying "you're buying into the brand". Well the brand is still not worth a huge amount so... they were right. Maybe a bit harsh on him for sure but they were definitely right to steer well clear of this.
