My coworker took his Impreza to a Grease Monkey. They drained his transmission fluid instead of his oil and didn't refill it until it was much too late. The transmission failed a month or so later and he ended up having to replace it out of pocket (of course the shop told him to pound sand). Never go to quick lube places, EVER. They are staffed by people who are unqualified and do not care.

To be completely honest it is most likely Chinese steel, poor manufacturing and cost saving. They make these oil pans with very thin steel and when you combine that with Chinese steel which is brittle, this is the result. I plan to have a drive through service center at my new shop some day where I could possibly do an oil change and complete inspection on vehicles while you drive your car through every 15 to 30 minutes.

If this was my customer and with my knowledge, I would have thumbed up some JB SteelStik and let them go on vacation. No need to drain the oil just mead the stuff with your fingers and rub it on. I use this stuff for similar repairs and it works. Don't believe me? Just ask Dale Jarrett the nascar diver as his oil pan became cracked during a race and the pit crew put some of this stuff on during a pitstop and guess what it sealed it.

Likely what caused the issue. No crush washer and an overtightened drain plug. I've seen pulled threads and places break the spot welds that hold the nut in place inside of the pan. No reason to ever over torque a drain bolt. Crush washers are one time use also.

I would drain the oil completely, clean the crack and area around it,er and replace the drain plug (cleaned of course). Use a penetrating Locktite on the crack and coat the area with a quick hardening compound. Some thing that can be removed with the application of heat (dual compound silicone, urethane or epoxy). This is meant to be a temporary fix until you can get a new oil pan or repair the existing one. Brazing should do,. At 50K miles I would think it should be covered under the manufacturers

Back in the early 90s, I had a hotrodded little Pinto, and I was racing home to get something because I was in a time crunch. On the way home, I had to pass over a double set of railroad tracks, usually they're smooth enough to go over at a speed above the posted limit, about 45 mph. Unfortunately, I was traveling at about twice that speed, and since it's a double track, I hit the first set and my front end launched upward, not enough for my tires to leave the road, but enough to take all the weight off of the front suspension. As I'm passing the second set of tracks, my front end slammed to the ground and hit hard, I mean really hard. I didn't think much of it until I noticed oil leaking later that day. Turns out, I i crushed the oil pan right under the drain plug and the metal cracked. It created about a quarter of an inch crack right at the edge of the reinforcement plate inside the oil pan. Basically, a small piece of metal welded inside the pan to allow the drain plug to thread in, the pan itself was relatively thin, like sheet metal. I acquired a new to me oil pan, cleaned it up, painted it, and replaced it for the original one. That was a learning experience considering I was in my early 20s and never did anything that involved before. It wouldn't have been so bad if I didn't have to drop the rack and pinion and lift the motor up to gain clearance to remove and replace the oil pan. But you live and learn, I learned to slow down over railroad tracks. 🤣😂

Why not have every vehicle with 2 part oil drain plug. Hex adapter threads into pan. It has female side that a hex plug threads into. So when removing you hold the adapter in the pan and remove plug. Careless cross threading means replacing adapter, not the pan, assuming you don't screw that up. But it's only in replacing adapter that pan threads are exposed

Kia and Hyundai oil pans are famous for having oil pan cracks around the oil drain plug! Caused by over tightening of plug during oil change, bad techs! So when you go to dealership or fast change oil shops they give you a bigger nightmare. I had a 2011 Santa Fe and replaced the pan only for owner to return 6 months later after going to fast lube shop and she returned with a new leaking oil pan crack at the drain plug……this time it had blue RTV on crack to get owner out of the shop!

I could clearly see the crack the oil pans on a lot of cars are made from recycled metal and lack the strength to hold up to repeated torque cycles... And or are very rust prone...on my own Hyundai sonata I had to replace the oil pan due to rust through.... I have cars that are over 50 yrs old with original pans and have never seen one rust through...sure stripped threads from some previous ham hand working on it but not fatigue failure... Sad state of today's quality control.

Hi Kenny, the first mistake on the part of the customer is that they bought a Kia Sorento. You have inspected well and caught the leak as it was happening and with your massive amount of experience, you could actually show us the crack where the oil is leaking from. It is time to park it, order a new oil pan and be done with it. If I was a real gambler (and I'm not), I might remove the oil pan, clean it thoroughly and JB Weld the crack but that is iffy as the entire engine is flexing under load and the crack could come back or even as you said crack like a piece of glass and it goes any distance it wants. Yes, the best possible solution is to park it on your lot there, order a new oil pan, install it and top off or change the oil, charge the customer accordingly and tell them that they can rest easy knowing that they had you as their technician and repair person. Life is good. Brother Kenny, Keep Wrenching and tell Mrs. Wrenching that I send my love and best wishes. Have a happy 4th of July holiday and just relax in the air conditioning. Wondering if the drain plug was replaced. In this day an age everything is suspect to corner cutting an poor tolerances bad metalergy. A lot of times I See people replacing the drain plug for every oil change not a bad idea but all it takes is having that Minor diameter of the thread Being off by a MIL OR 10-15 thow Even with the same thread pitch. Could have caused that My top 2 guesses. The automotive World is very DYI unfriendly these days. It takes an expert professional to know what parts to use or knot to use New doesn't mean good. If It has Dorman or standard Ignition Part# On it. Be careful. If its was mine I Would Let It drain all day And try to hot stitch that thing back together. Its already junk what's it gonna hurt just don't burn the car down.Or maybe For a friend or very good customer. But if I did that for a friend or a customer I would remove the PAN then weld it Only if there was no way to get a new one. And it was gonna ruin someone's vacation. But I wouldn't recommend that unless you were extremely confident and Competent. Oh and don't use adapt one remam calipers. Totally off subject but I think I should put it out to the professional automotive community . Inless you want to get sued. I put a set on a customer's car couple weeks ago and after bleeding the brakes went to stand on the pedal to make sure there was no leaks as i always do with any hydraulic repair And one of the calipers proceed to blow a piston Seal instait pedal drop Complete brake failure. Thank God it happened to me on the rack Before I even raod tested it but that's scary. sprayed brake fluid everywhere ruined the new pads. Sorry off-topic but parts aren't what they used to be great video.
