I feel like this is going to get really messy, regardless of what's going to get done. There are so many points that need to be addressed. The copyright claims and consent of using the artist's voice (dead or alive), the regulation of using AI in music, which kind of reminds me of regulation talks of Web3/Cryptocurrencies , and to differentiate from AI vs real artist vs a cut up of a real artist. I'm all for the use of AI as along as it used in a creative and controled space. However, careful precautions need to be taken when regulating it.
@Shinyshoesz Жыл бұрын
I mean, here's the thing -- if an AI can generate songs you like, then it's gonna do it's thing. It'll be up to consumers to go to real venues and see humans and not just stream music for consumption. The idea that artists are products has been a thing for forever and many fans treat them as such (like they were McDonalds or Chick fil a). If we, as a society, just let computers write our music for us going forward then that's on us and not on the tech per se. I think it will work for a lot of folks who don't really care about the art or emotion behind a song and just want a nice beat. That's already here and been here for a while. If you like live performance, then that's gonna be a lot harder to fake (yes, AI can generate some of that too but it's a stretch and very costly comparatively). The premium will probably be back on that end of things -- things that are actual in the physical world.

Yeah, I agree. Like, I'm not for AI art, personally, but I know the overwhelming majority of people will probably just wanna see a cool picture and don't give a shit how it got made or who made it. I may not like it, but it is what it is.
@xbigsoup Жыл бұрын
@@Prederick I kind of feel like this is where AI is going in general. Its not superseding or replacing human thought, its just an extension that lets us more rapidly come up with frameworks that we can create truly meaningful art out of. Its like any other technological advancement that people thought would completely destroy industries (e.g. the internet, calculators, smartphones, etc.), people always find a way to use it as a tool to create a product significantly better than anything that the technology could output by itself. Its definitely going to change the music industry forever, but thats not explicitly a bad thing.
@xbigsoup Жыл бұрын
@@Prederick Like remember when deepfakes came out and everyone freaked the fuck out because we were so sure people were gonna make fake videos of public figures saying things that people would actually believe? Then do you remember how that didn't happen? We adapt. Thats why we have the uncanny valley, the more we get used to it the easier it is to point out the differences. Like, even with this song, there's a few lyrics here and there that make it pretty clear its a little off (for instance, the lyrics "she know what she need, on her knees, cause she blessed" came out as "she know what she need, cause she need, yeah she blessed")

I feel like although there’s a huge place for AI in the realm for creatives and it can be incredibly intimidating, the idea that you can be imitated and recreated in some other world, the one thing they could never replicate as an artist, are your choices. Art is the most human thing we have, because artists choose what they create most times, that’s why we can tell when an artists music is a soulless imitation of another. Idk if I worded it right, but many of the artists we look at and love, we’re attracted to their unique, organic and human choices

At this point, in quite a lot of cases labels can do whatever they want with an artist's image & music without consent from the actual artist 🤷♂️ the consent was already given to them via the contract that the artist most likely didn't understand or read properly

I think people underestimate the power of human connection when it comes to the success of the artist. People idolize the person behind the music more than the music itself, even if their perception of that person is deeply flawed and influenced by branding and persona. There's been countless "sound-alike" artists over the years who have had voices indistinguishable from celebrities (ex. Dusty Locane = Pop Smoke, Kasinova Tha Don = Tupac) but they never come remotely close to the success of the well known artists. Sure, there would be an audience for AI but those people would have never bought a ticket to the artists show or supported that artist in any meaningful way, they're casual listeners who don't look deeper than the surface level of the music. I think the only reason this particular Drake song blew up is because AI technology is new and exciting to a lot of people but without a real person behind it, it's just novelty. As far as the misinformation spreading goes, I definitely think that's something we need intervention for and is a valid point. TLDR: People idolize the person behind the music more than the music itself, without the person it's just novelty.

anyone who knows me how I feel about ai. This is NOT GOOD. I feel ai has been used for hit songs, albums (posthumous), and tv shows/movies. I feel the first example I remember is Michael Jackson posthumous album (the one with Love Never Felt So Good with JT 😂) - I remember everyone saying that is not Michael - and at the time we said it like "that has to be some impersonator or robot s***" I think that album was combination of both real vocals from people like Jason Malachi and multiple ai/ sound production technology for some songs. and it's SCARY!

Honestly creating AI bar fillers is probably the best implementation because it can study the cadence and have a database of a variety of flows and lyricism. Just my take

Tbh honest the way ai is gonna go I just see it being able to let you customize your songs. Instead of waiting 10 years for Frank ocean to make a record u can just take the new Brent faiyaz song and make it Frank. It’s the new wave of remix’s just instead of a beat switch it’s vocals

Something else that concerns me is what the language of the regulation, because there could be negative effects. If it simply concerns the artist's likeness then that could mean that impersonations or parodies are at risk, even though copyright protects parodies

The thing about AI though is that fans could also benefit from something as unlikely as a J.Cole x Kendrick album. We've been wanting it for ages and wont get it unless we use something like AI to get us something that'll be as close as it gets

Idk that would feel really awkward to listen to, the thing that would be awesome about a Cole x KDot album is their chemistry that they would come up with and everything that they could create together themselves, not what the fans can do with their vocals

i agree, usually when regulation occurs, corporations will use it as an opportunity to guide the direction of the regulation to give themselves power in other areas. Record labels will 100% convene and make sure that random people aren't able to publish AI music, and make sure that AI music must be disclosed as such. However, I also think that they'll legally solidify their ownerships of an artists likeness, to the point where a record label can generate AI music using your likeness posthumously. Just about nothing we can do about it, it'll probably become the next standard
@xbigsoup Жыл бұрын
Idk man. Nothing is preventing these companies from just copyright striking these songs, they'd obviously know which ones are real and which ones aren't, and I don't think the courts are going to rule as grey as people are assuming. If the music people are making with AI is better than the music the artist is creating, then maybe that artist just isn't that good. I think there's somewhat of a good side to this, it's gonna force artists to actually be more purposeful and meaningful in their song-crafting, because pumping out generic catchy hits wont work when you can just whip one up with AI. Plus, its not like this is entirely AI made. Dude still wrote the lyrics, sang the song, and made the beat. The only thing he's actually "faking" is the voice, but it'd still be a dope song regardless because its just good.
@NathanNimi Жыл бұрын
I think only the only ones that can combat this are the people. There may not be much an artist can do in terms of people using ai and puttung remixes and stuff on platforms like SoundCloud. The tool is here now, and it will be used for good and bad, just like the Internet. We as music listeners, though, must choose not to buy and listen to the new music -- especially not if they are dead and they can't confirm who wrote and performed it. ... as I type this, though, I know Sony are rubbing their hands together cooking up a new Michael Jackson album. *sigh*

I think it will be interesting to see how actual artists use AI to make music . It really might revolutionize the industry like digital production has. But it is scary in the hands of corporations, as with all other industries.

Labels probably want to regulate the rights so that they can claim some of these “fan created” AI songs and generate money without the artist approval. Similar to how companies claim KZbin videos.

I imagine that the legislation for labels etc to exploit their artists' likeness (whether dead or alive) already exists, the same way that it did when Disney used Carrie Fisher's or especially Peter Cushing's likeness (I say especially as he was never even employed by them as he passed away in 1994 and nobody should have decided for him that he will participate in that trilogy).
