Thanks for another awesome video! Great job! Very much looking forward to the next one :) I'll more than likely get a short layover in NYC later this year. Might be fun to check out both Liberty Landing Marina and Street Boat Basin Marina. Especially after having seen some of them in your videos :)

Thanks Dahlke, If you let me know before your layover in NYC then I might be able to hook you up with some of my sailing friends who live and work there. It's a small world. That would be awesome!

Great episode! Hope you looked up some of the places Gavin mentioned and possibly met up with some of his brethren. Hope you're staying warm, hope the repairs are going well! I hope Mo feels better as more episodes reveal themselves, so sad to see her not feeling well. Totally off topic but there's a brewery in San Leandro called "Drakes" maybe we can convince them to make a special brew and call it "Paragon?"

Paragon beer! :) I can't wait for the chapters of our story that take place starting in Boston. Our friend Éanna (who I sailed with in the Fiona series) flew all the way from Dublin to Boston to spend the next 4 months with us sailing to Canada, Greenland and Iceland. I'm also a little concerned about the editing of those episodes because after Éanna arrived and we pushed off for Canada... that's when we really started filming. We filmed many many times more hours of footage per day than we had up to that point, so it will take much longer to sift thought and edit.

DrakeParagon's Real Cruising Life I sent the brewery a message, maybe they'll contact you? Seems like a great name for a beer: "Drake's Paragon" They already have a few nautical themed ales out there. I'm excited for the next episodes as well. Éanna seems like a great guy from the Fiona series and that does make the trip a lot less stressful with 3 taking shifts. Just do what you can do to the best you can without driving yourself or anyone else nuts :) We'll understand.

Wonderful video again ! What a difference that a few miles from 79th street makes in the people and facilities. Hell gate is an interesting passage, time yourself to get flushed in, then get flushed out on the tide change. If not, get a 5 knot current in your face. It gets VERY interesting when the engine decides to quit just before getting there. Lloyd's Neck is a very nice protected anchorage a comfortable day trip up from NY harbor on Long Island. You have to hug the shoreline on the port side to get in, but really nice place to sleep the storm away.

Sometimes I have nightmares about loosing propulsion or steerage in the wrong place at the wrong time as we've had our share of close calls. Hell's gate would be one of those places... Speaking of nightmares, in our next episode I recount how I hit a bridge on the east side of Roosevelt Island back in the early early wicked early days back when I knew nothing...
@rfb91a
@rfb91a 10 жыл бұрын
DrakeParagon's Real Cruising Life FYI :: the bridge always wins those arguments. I always found it interesting passing North & South Brother Islands, and then reading of the history of those places, then Rikers,Island and Execution Rock.

Looking forward to seeing the trip through Hell's Gate. Got to catch the tide right. I sailed a Monomoy through there and down the river years ago. You'll be passing SUNY Maritime College on your port side before you enter the Sound. That's where I learned to sail!

Hi Dennis, We filmed SUNY Maritime College and the Empire State VI training ship. We also overlaid a small text description about it. At the time we noticed 2 patrol boats (US Navy?) going back and forth in front of the Empire State VI. I think they were there because of the heightened security that happened right after the Boston Marathon bombing. It's not tomorrow's episode, but I think it's in the next one. Thanks for sailing with us,

Thanks Lee! At this moment we are visiting relatives in the states over Christmas and New Years, but will soon fly back to the boat for the coldest part of the Irish winter. It seems in Ireland they burn peat more than wood in their stoves, and it seems to work great in Paragon's stove for cabin heating. Thanks for sailing with us, Happy New Year!

Brendan's Travels After the previous owners sold Paragon to me, they bought an RV to spend the next years exploring the US I think maybe similar to what you're doing. Since this video was filmed, we sailed over 7000 nautical miles and voyaged through Long Island Sound, Buzzards Bay, Newport, Block Island, through the Cape Cod Canal to Boston, Gloucester, offshore to Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, a then a big voyage to Greenland where we spent 2 months exploring the southwest coast before transiting the magnificent Prins Christian Sund. From there we went offshore to Reykjavík, Iceland where we settled over the winter and produced the episodes of Season 1. After a total of 9 months in Iceland we sailed to the Faroe Islands where the people are descendant of the Vikings and we called that most wonderful country home for 3 months and made many friends before sailing on to Scotland and Northern Ireland. When we arrived in the south of Ireland we settled down for this winter and are now producing the episodes of Season 2. In the Spring we are planning to sail back to Greenland via Iceland and Faroe.

@drakeParagon
@drakeParagon 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Tomas, better late than never? The chart plotter is a Furuno MFD8 and we've been very happy with its performance. Unfortunately this model is no longer available, but we have loved how it works and Furuno has excellent customer service as well. One day it will have to be replaced, and I think I can say with confidence that we would buy another Furuno product. Hope you are well and staying safe. Take care ⚓-Monique

Drake, Do you have a video about your solar setup? I would love to see how you do that pivot on the lifelines and how you add and remove them. JC s/v Home Office
@drakeParagon
@drakeParagon 10 жыл бұрын
Hi JC, I've not made a video specifically to show the details of our solar setup. But I'm happy to talk about it in comments here. I replaced the lifelines with stainless steel tubing. I actually hired a welder to cut the tops of the stantions off and weld the SS tubing rail to the top, but now I would have just used stainless tube T connectors instead of welding. The panels are made by Kyocera. The mounting system is made by NOA Mounts (www.noa.se/en) The wiring goes to Bulgin IP68 Buccaneer waterproof quick connect plugs in the deck (www.bulgin.co.uk/Products/Buccaneer/Buccaneer.html) When we're offshore I store the panels in the RIB dinghy using a custom stacking system that I built out of starboard. I have 5 networked Solar Boost 3024iL solar controllers made by Blue Sky Energy (www.blueskyenergyinc.com/products/) and 4 Lifeline 8D batteries (www.lifelinebatteries.com) Hope this helps! For an even nicer solar panel pivot shown in more detail, check out Don and D's setup on Southern Cross in the video "Deck Tour of Liveaboard Sailboat Southern Cross, Part 3 (Dickerson 41)" @ kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpe4d5lvZt2ZhJI&src_vid=bvKLatvNSxQ&feature=iv&annotation_id=annotation_3552568969

Drake, where did you get the small cockpit cushions. I am looking to get those exact cushions and would like to know where you got yours as seen at 3:40 the small square ones. Thanks! -Kyle
@drakeParagon
@drakeParagon 10 жыл бұрын
I got them from C Cushions Inc. at www.ccushions.com/marine.htm. They have templates for cockpit cushions for most boats. Just tell them your boat brand/model and they will send you cushions in the mail. They are easy to clean. But don't use them in freezing temperatures! If it's freezing cold and you sit on them then they will crack. Another company that makes similar cushions is Bottomsiders at bottomsiders.com.

DrakeParagon's Real Cruising Life so i hear the 2 mast or 3 mast sailboats are better for crossings but I think trying to manage just 1 is enough for me,that said im looking at a 3 mast robert's desighn and the price is right
@drakeParagon
@drakeParagon 10 жыл бұрын
razzorbladz I've never sailed aboard a ketch or yawl so I don't really know, but I often also thought that 1 mast was enough work and that reefing 2 sails would be more difficult especially if single handed.
