Thanks for the sub! It depends on what you are doing. If you want to cut some heavy oxidation with a rotary, then you’d want a 7inch presta wool heavy cutting pad, or if you are polishing with a forced rotation polisher then you would want a orange forced rotation pad

Didn't even know B&S made old school double sided wool pads! I've been using the expensive 3M for years. Can't go back to single sided now, double just has too many advantages. Buff & Shine make incredible products for how inexpensive they are, I use alot of their DA style pads. I mainly do standard base/clear correction but I've been doing a few RVs lately. Gelcoat is a whole different animal, you guys earn your money man! Do you have a video covering how you handle vinyl graphic decals? Some RVs have a LOT of them. It can turn an already long job into a tedious nightmare taping them all off or correcting half of a 30'+ RV with precision edge work around dozens of graphics. 😧

I actually haven’t used the G21. The G9 is good for waxing and sanding. Anything more than that, you’ll want a flex 3401 or a rupes millie

👍 🎯On point ! LC Force Pads can no doubt work on the DA as well. If you have a 15mm or 21mm long throw you can also utilize the HDO pads as they have an additional layer of support on the backing face that enables the pads to last a bit longer .

Drake - all of your videos are very very very informative and helpful. What's your opinion on Jescar Power Lock Plus vs. Jescar Ultralock Plus. The Ultralock Plus states it has all of the properties of Powerlock Plus AND it also has SiO2. Have you used the Ultralock at all? Would you recommend using the Power Lock Plus or the Ultralock Plus on the entire hull from rub rail down to include the full bottom AND also inside on non skid floor? Lastly I haven't seen you apply any sealant or SiO2 to the bottom of boats below the water line. Should we not be concerned with sealing and protecting the bottom?

First off, I have personally switched to using starke hyperhold instead of Jescar! I find hyperhold works better for boats in salt water! Second, don’t worry about waxing underneath. It will only last a few weeksn

Hi Drake. Thanks for another great video. You’re a good man for sharing your knowledge, especially for guys like me who are looking to move into marine from auto. Drake, you ‘re a big promoter of the Flex 3401, which is a great tool, but I’ve never heard you comment on the Flex 14-2 150 rotary, specifically its ability to match either the Mikita or Dewalt on gel coat. The Flex is 2 pounds lighter than the other two polishers and also has basically identical specs. Aside from price, why shouldn’t I buy the Flex. I would really appreciate your thoughts on this because I have a sneaking suspicion that you’ve put the Flex rotary to the test.

I currently have a new black boat with very little oxidation marks. Should I use the orange pad with the 400, then follow it with the Micro fiber pad? What Polish do you recommend with the microfiber pad? Love the videos.

If your boat just has light, scratch marks, and light oxidation, use the 400 with the orange pad, then you can use the microfiber pad to apply your sealant. Do a small section and see how it looks. You may have to do deeper cutting if the 400 isn’t strong enough to pull the scratching oxidation out of the black gelcoat.

Hey Bro! I would use some Starke Elevate with an orange lake country forced rotation pad on either a DA or a Forced rotation, that will polish it out really nice! Great info, I have been working on a 40 year old Boston Whaler all summer. Question --Do the buff and shine wool pad and lake country orange pad work on a DeWalt DPW849X .. ? The disc it came with has a Velcro fastener (are all of these pads hook & loop? description is not clear)

You can polish and even finish with a wool pad, I have the buff and shine 802-N double sided wool cutting, yours is the 803-N which has a longer pile height at 1.5”, the 802-N has a 1.25” pile height, it’s supposed to cut even more aggressively. I also have the 803-Y which is a medium cutting/polishing double sided wool pad, and I also have the 803-YS double sided wool polishing/finishing pad. I’ve polished some cars just fine with the 803-Y and 803-YS with something like Meguiar’s 205 on the rotary, no holograms or anything.

Hey man! I suppose you could, but you’ll still have micro-swirls in the paint/gelcoat. I save wool pads for heavy cutting, then I take over with foam. I like to finish polish and seal with foam pads and a forced rotation. However there is this AMAZING pad by lake country, it’s called their “purple foam-wool blend pad”. That pad you could absolutely finish Great with! Give it a try! No, most of the compounds and policies you’ll use on a foam pad, have enough oils in them to keep them from burning the gelcoat.

You may be using to much polish. All you really need is 4 small pea sized dots for a 2 x 2 section. After every 2x2 section clean the pad with a pad brush or some type of brush

My question is, my non skid is not really oxidized, not chalky anyway, but has lost it's luster and has stains on it. Should I use a wool pad and heavy cut compound. Hi Drake. You videos are VERY informative. I've only recently discovered you. Do you, or will you have anything on restoring Awlgrip paint. Mine is tired, and I want to stall repainting for a few more years. I understand Awlgrip is unique... it separates as it cures into a base (the color or pigment) and a clear coat that migrates to the top. Any aggressive cutting or polishing can destroy the clear gloss coat. Any advice or tips. There are thousands of us out here with this issue, and I'm hoping you have thoughts to save the day!

I do not recommend using a Terry cloth pad. I would use a light foam pad for applying wax/ Sealant. I’m a big fan of Jescar polymer sealant

Another great and informative video from Drake. Here's an idea for another video similar to this. Lets say you want to start a detailing company with $1,000 or $1,500 (you could obviously set the amount for your videro). But let's say somebody is sticking their toes in the water of detailing, not just washing. Could you do a video on a start up budget and what products you would recommend within the budget?? I think it would be a great idea. You have gotten me so far in my side hustle and love all of your videos!

If you are using a rotary to finish, you can definitely use a rotary to buy the wax afterwards. If I just dedicate those pads to wax, then I don’t even bother, washing them out, since wax/sealant will be going back in there next time anyways.

In your videos you use multiple different buffers during your system. Thank you! So, I get this question all of the time. If you have a 99 there is probably going to some fading or oxidation. For lower budges Id get a cheaper rotary and a ccheaper da. Harbor freight has decent machines for around $70 each. You really need the rotary to compound, and the da to wax and polish.

Great video. What do you recommend to buff out white PVC marks on a dark blue, gel coat hull? The PVC pipes were being used as guide posts for loading/unloading and left white lines on the side of the hull

Rupes makes a blue pad called coarse rotary cutting pad. Would you use this pad on your flex 3401vrg to cut and or polish boat gel coat? Does not say anywhere on the packaging that it can be used on a forced rotation polisher like the flex but i assume it is ok. Thought id see if you know of this pad or have used it and could recommend it for use with the flex?

My trophy 21 ft was badly oxidized. I bought presto products and after cutting with their black/white cutting pad. The pads is throwing like hair crime hair wool from the pad. How long should a cutting pad last? I followed all your recommendations and hull looks amazing. Boat didn’t look this good new! Dave Thanks for the tips Washington state.

Great video it takes a lot of guess work out of choosing the right tools. I do have a quick question if I can? I own a 70’ yacht with a lot of surface area to work, it’s all painted white so no gel coat and very light oxidation. What could you recommend using to clean up and shine up with as few steps as possible but still get a lasting effect?

You should never buff Awlgrip, only use the polymer sealant that’s made for it by hand

DA’s are not meant for compounding or heavy cutting. That’s why there’s really no use for a wool pad on a DA because you don’t cut with them. They are not powerful enough to break through any decent amount of oxidation. Use your rotary and heavy wool the remove the oxidation, then your DA for polish/swirls removing, and applying wax/sealant 😎🔥👍🏻

Hi Drake, I have a robalo 4 yrs old, one side paint is oxidizing, getting chalky n dull due to sun. Can I compound adequately with 3m heavy cut "perfect it gelcoat" a griot g9 and a wool pad, or do I need a rotary to do this or? Hey bro! You need a rotary if you have that much oxidation. Then you can polish and apply sealant to the boat after you are done using the rotary to remove the swirls

Years of experience! ha The best way is todo a small 2 ft x 2ft test spot. use what you think the boat needs and see how it looks. Thats the best way to see

Great video BOSS I detail cars and now some person asked to paint correct white speed boat and wax it I only have 15mm DA and some foam pads. I know white color is forgiving so i am thinking of one step correcting with da and medium cutting pad, or just heavy cutting pad + heavy cutting compound + da to corrct that white paint which should leave invisible hologramms which white color should hide + some visible haze which wax should high. Thats all in theory , i know nothing about boats polishing. 8 metres white boat , sides only / externally. If it is possible to do it with da , how many hours will it take with 6.5 pads just so i know how much to.charge money wise please ? Got to answer by the end of today

It’s impossible for me to begin to guess how long it’s gonna take to do that job. without knowing oxidation level, how big the boat is With a DA probably pretty long if it’s oxidized, because then you will need a rotary. If it’s not too bad and only needs a polish then a DA would probably be okay. Is the r boat gelcoat or painted?

Hi Drake, I am doing a customers 20 foot boat and it’s the first boat I have ever done. I’ve done my research and have everything I need to do. My question is, how much of a boat do you normally do? Do you do the outside hull all the way to the bottom or just the waterline, do you do every bit of gel coat inside the boat all the way to the floor of the boat? I’m sure it’s customer preference but what do you normally do?? That’s for your videos!

Hey bro! It’s whatever the customer is paying for. Typically a lot of customers want exterior topside compound, polish and seal as well as the hull sides.

Do I first wash the boat to strip the wax, then dry, then hit it with an orange pad with a compound to hit the swirl marks and buff. Then use a microfiber pad to wax with a polymer sealant?
