After working on a 16ft open skiff I bought that was chalky but basically open with minimal crevices and a smooth floor, all I can say is holy cow! the amount of work it takes to go over any of these bigger boats, top to bottom, 3 and 4 times like you do. Up, down, inside outside, rinse repeat, wax on wax off, damn man, worth every penny.

After following these steps, I have a new appreciation on how labor intensive this non skid detailing is. Took me (amateur) 8 hours to do the whole thing. I started with a wool pad and DA Polisher and my wool pad had wool flying all over so I think a orbital machine is what I was missing. I just used a medium pad instead and started with Meguiars ultimate compound. Basically started with super clean wash, dry, remove rust on my non skid, ultimate compound, super clean wash again, dry, jescar, let sit, wipe on the marine 31 sealer. Great learning experience and made the deck much smoother and now no more white powder on my hands when I wipe with hands. I think you've used woody wax in the past so would you use woody or marine 31? I keep my boat on a mooring so woody is what I used in the past.
@DrakesDetailing Жыл бұрын
Hey bro, what are you wax is great for interior and cockpit stuff, but if you’re talking exterior or non-skid, I would use an SI O2 protectant versus woody wax

My boat is only 4 years old and has been well maintained (I acquired it in June of this year) so it doesn't have too much oxidation on the non skids. With that intro I have a few questions: 1- Since it's not badly weathered can I skip the Super Cut step? 2- Since the season is over in the North, I'm in heated storage and don't have access to running water, any suggestions to change the wash step after buffing with the Menzerna 400 compound? 3- When do you use a microfiber pad? Can you use it for lighter cutting with the compound instead of the wool pad? Sorry for all the questions, I appreciate you taking the time to respond!

Thanks for watching. If it’s not oxidized you can skip the heavy cut. Clean with rubbing alcohol or diluted degreaser like super clean The wool pad will cut better, if you do not need the cutting power, then yes the micro fiber will work fine

So WOW great video. I’ve watched it numerous times too. Just watching for technique. I wish you’d do bloopers reel where the cord wraps around the Makita or of it jumping out of your hand! I mean I had it happen. Maybe you never had that happen? Ha! Ok serious now. I am 100% sold on that Super Cut. Wow. My Boston Whaler is a 92 and guaranteed she’s never been deoxidized. I started off using a heavy cut auto polish. It really wasn’t very good. After watching this video I ordered EVERYTHING and today I got after it with Super Cut. Oh My God. That stuff is like sand blasting gel coat. Grin. I have to wear eye protection because tiny sand particles fling everywhere. But that stuff works so so so well. Love it. You can do a spot and instantly know in just a few passes if you need a tad more. Also I will say that I didn’t know what life could be before I bought that Presta wool buff. I was using a Harbor Freight one. Night and day difference! After doing the Super Cut I had to power hose the boat to get all that compound out. It’s very gritty but it “flows” with the water hose nicely. Tomorrow I’m doing step 2 with the Menzerna 400. I TRUST that it will actually smooth out the cut. Right now my nonskid is very clean looking albeit not bright. My flat interior surfaces are almost shiny but not quite. And yes some of that hologram stuff. Even if I stopped now I would be amazed at how much better the boat looks. But I’m all-in and going for the full Monty on this baby. I love my Whaler and I’m gonna make her happy she has a new owner. Anyway long note but I must say PRODUCTS MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE. For me I have to learn more technique but I’m not “bad” and “dumb”. So products matter more than technique if you have enough technique. Great videos and I’ve subscribed and will continue to dig watching. I love boats.

And is tape/cloth the right method around seat cushions that are bolted?
@DrakesDetailing Жыл бұрын
Hey Corey! Yes, the gelcoat you will want to cut with a buffer, then swirl remove nicely so you don’t see the “halos” in the gelcoat. As for the nonskid, you can just use the sideways method as shown in the video. You don’t need to worry about this on the nonskid because you don’t see the swirls or “halos” because of the pattern of the decking (aka it’s not smooth like the cockpit gelcoat because it’s textured).

For a brand new boat right from the factory and dealer can you just apply the non skid sealer to it with out a strip wash and buff?
@htownsfinest872 жыл бұрын
What about using the DA with a cutting pad and not using a rotary
@DrakesDetailing2 жыл бұрын
A DA is not meant for, and won’t have the power to cut through oxidation like a rotary does. A DA should just be for light polishing and applying Polymer Sealant.

Both. The clear plastic has a toughness to it I think from not being washed after use in salt water. Could I get away with using jascar sealant?

As a follow-up question, how do you tackle removing grime from plastic non-skid such as ladder and anchor covers that are not fiberglass/gelcoat? The fiberglass cleans fairly easily but the plastic seems to want to retain the stains. Thanks and best wishes as always Drake!
@bowang8747 Жыл бұрын
Instead of wool pad, I used a foam pad with DA polisher and Meguiars ultimate compound. I didn't have the stuff Drake used and also I didn't have an orbital machine. After this, my non skid still looks and feels night and day better.

I did the Jescar Power Lock on my 35' sailboat topsides and when I buffed with fiber towel I went home. This morning I have a blue haze all over the boat. I called Jescar and spoke with Eric and they never heard of this before and are going to research it. I sent in pictures and a link for this video. I told them that I think you know your stuff but I'm in a pickle as I do not know how to remove it. I tried to use a yellow 3M wool pad (Dry) and it did not faze it. I need to safely remove the stuff and still have the ceramic next step to do. Thoughts??

Great video as always. Question, how would you recommend cleaning and maintaining a soft grip floor like SeaDek or Gatorstep? Any product recommendations would be welcome as well?

A diluted degreaser like super clean will clean them right up! I kinda go over it in my “detailing a ceramic coated boat” video, I believe it’s around 6:45.

What do you recommend for the LEGO brick style non skid. This stuff is litteraly Like abunch of little spikes almost and it’s destroying my pads. I’ve done half the top deck of a 34 foot race sail boat covered in ropes (absolute nightmare with the rotary I know) but it’s destroyed 2 of my pads and I’ve only done one step on half the deck 😂 I signed up for a nightmare.

Hey bro! Sometimes unfortunately that kind cannot be buffed because you’ll burn through the nonskid in the buffing process

Thanks Drake, awesome video for renovating the non-skid. Question: can I use the Ardex 600 for heavy cut on the non-skid or has to be Presta super cut? And vice versa - can Presta be used on the topsides? Just trying to see if 1 product can be used for both as I do this just once a year. Thanks again

The Ardex cakes up a little too much to do nonskid with m, I’d stick with the presta

Is there any way to use a rotary for vinyl seats in bad shape? Or will it just pull the protective layer off and destroy them? I’m restoring an X-star I got for a steal with only 250hrs but the seats are terrible. Trying to resell it and not spend $6k+ on reupholstering if possible.
@DrakesDetailing2 жыл бұрын
Hey man! A buffer will absolutely destroy and rip right through your vinyl. Just try some diluted degreaser with a magic eraser, then follow up with a sealant afterwards

I'm learning a lot by watching your videos and I appreciate it. My boat is new and I've been using the Star Brite Non Skid Deck Cleaner every time we wash the boat. Hi Drake, I do not own a rotary tool. I own a direct drive orbital polisher or would a dual action polisher with the Shurhold brush attachment (soft or Medium) work in place of the rotary tool?
@timmckinnon93533 жыл бұрын
I tried the Shurhold yellow brush with a Griot’s G9 DA Buffer (Maguire’s 49 compound because I already had it) and it really didn’t do the job. It was better but couldn’t seem to get down to the lower level of the non skid. Top of the dots were glossy but not the lower level which is probably still going to tend hold dirt over time. Guess I’m going to need a rotary if I want to the non skid to sparkle.
@paullequeux75623 жыл бұрын
@@timmckinnon9353 Shurhold makes three different brushes, soft, medium and stiff. Do you think a stiffer brush would work better for the bottom of the non skid? Just thinking about my options before I need to think about a rotary.

In a perfect work yes, but on non skid it isn't so important that you use a different pad.

Really enjoyed your vid. I believe you mentioned using "Presta Super Cut" and "Jescar Powerlock Plus Polymer Sealant", as two compounds used in this project. In a different vid, you mentioned you like the "Starke Level R Heavy Cut Compound", for 2021. I noticed on the Jescar site, they have a new "Jescar Ultra Lock Plus Polymer Sealant" introduced. My question is, would you change to these two newer compounds mentioned or stick with your initial recommendations in your vid? Thankyou for your vids--very educational. Grant

How slippery does the Jescar (or any other wax/sealant) make the non-skid after doing it this way?
@DrakesDetailing2 жыл бұрын
It can be a little slick, but it’s not too bad. Just be a tad extra cautious when wet, but it’s waaaay better then trying to scrub the dirt and grime out of all those crevices when it’s oxidized! ha
