Hello Dr. Stephens, I was hoping you would do an updated video on sunscreens. I have watched your other videos but I have a serious hyperpigmentation problem that has been getting a lot better with your advise on products. I wasn't sure which sunscreens had the blue light protection that would be more helpful for my hyperpigmentation. Thank you so much for suggestion products. You are much appreciated.

European sunscreens apparently offer and ficus on higher UVA protection whereas Korean SPFs don't and focus on actives. They might feel nice, but I'm sticking to European. I don't have faith in Korean sunscreens 😮

1) Always use sunscreen 2) Use 30+ SPF, with UVA/UVB and visible light coverage, use waterproof sunscreen if doing water activities. 3) Using a sunscreen unique to your skin type, tone, and skin concern. If you want blue light protection include that. 4) Use enough sunscreen and 5)Do not apply expired sunscreen. 6)Use sunscreen daily. 7)Reapply every 2 hours especially if exposed to the sun. 8) Use sunscreen when putting the skin at higher risk, e.g. when using UV lambs. 9) Properly store sunscreen don't put it in hot areas and don't remove it from the original container. 10) Don't for get to apply on the hard to reach areas. *Bonus: Use sun and UV protective clothing.

I wish it was easier to find more affordable options for sunscreen. Often the biggest barrier for me using less sunscreen than I know I should, or not reapplying, or skipping days is because I genuinely can't afford to go through so much! It's difficult enough finding formulas that feel nice on the skin and aren't filled with a bunch of irritants, but getting it at a sustainable price point is nearly impossible. Using the shot glass measurement as a guide, that's, what, an entire ounce to cover your body for a single application on a hot summer's day? It'd take anywhere from a third of the tube to an entire container of sunscreen, depending on the packaging, and that's just not realistic for those of us without the income to drop $20-30 on a regular basis. I want sunscreen to be more accessible so I can take care of my skin the way I should, but circumstances prevent me from doing that.

I use Black Girl Sunscreen "kids" SPF 50 on my face, it's $10 for a 3 oz. tube, it's half the price of the adult version and much less greasy. Equate (Walmart brand) Sunscreen For All Skin Tones spf 50 (8 oz. tube) is less than $6 and leaves me glowing and protected. It's specifically made for people of color.

One question? Why in Africa, women don’t put sunscreen on their face and they have beautiful skin, no acne, no hyperpigmentation? My mother even my grandma, my cousins have perfect skin and they don’t use sunscreen 🤷🏾‍♀️ I think the reason is because some people do use irritating ingredients as retinoids, AHA, etc. Because if you use active product you are condamned to use sunscreen.

So true. I;m Kenyan. And some people here, both men and women, in their 50s and 60s look so good. And these aren't middle class Kenyans working in offices. I'm talking about people living in the village, working in their farms as their occupation. And they don't wear hats while farming. The only products they use on their face are washing with a bar soap and applying petroleum jelly! And others working in open air markets, roadside, and construction sites under scorching sun. Personally I didn't know black people needed sunscreen until like 2021 when i started watching You Tube skin care videos!! And I'm 34! Actually, I heard sunscreen being mentioned in my country for the first time maybe at 20 when Kenyan Albinos were requesting the government to supply them with free sunscreen. Before then I had only heard of the product in Western movies when White characters on the beach/pool applied sunscreen lol 🤪😜🤣So i always thought it was a white people product or light skinned Asians

Well I don't know if everyone on the continent is using Shea butter. But I know that Shea butter is naturally sun blocking. I think it has an SPF of 6. I know that's low but it's something. So maybe that's why. Our Ancestors were wise and did so many things that science is just now "proving" or (in my opinion) just now catching up with. Additionally I think people on the continent dress very modestly in part because of the sun exposure. So that can be taken into consideration as well.

I see now they have mineral sunscreens which are so harsh but I don’t want to use a product that makes me skin worse or puts me at higher risk for skin cancer . I remember I went to Vegas and me and my sister were enjoying a roof top pool I was the only one to use coconut oil and my sister got sunburn really bad . I was completely fine . In the video I mention that a common sunscreen mistake is relying on the wrong form of sunscreen as your main application because most people don’t use enough (spray/powder) for adequate sun protection. Regarding the amount of sunscreen to use. I think the way people apply sunscreen is also an important factor. If someone measures out the right amount for just the face, but then rub the sunscreen in with the whole surface area of both hands considering that both hands is about 300cm2, basically means someone has 33% less on their face. So the more area someone used of their hands to apply the sunscreen, basically also the more product you need. For the face on average 600cm2, so 1.2 grams, but including those hands, it can be 900cm2, so 1.8 grams. Same when people review a sunscreen on one hand, if they then rub it in with their whole other hand, often also over the wrist what I often see, that is very unlikely the correct amount.

I'm a black male in my 40s. I just started using more sunscreen, especially in moisturizers. I bought Cerave AM and PM and both are fragrance free, but smell chemically. I bought Neutrogena's SPF 30 sunscreen and same thing, it smells. Are there any good sunscreens for us melanin reach folks that doesn't have a bad smell or leave white casting?

Brava! Great video 😁! Btw, the tip about if you don’t like it, you won't use it is right on! 300 years ago the dermatologist I went to for acne said the same thing and I never forgot it because it was so true. Keep up the good work 😉!

Great video! I find it really tricky to find sunscreens I can use around the eyes. I often use stick mineral sunscreens or lip sunscreens around the eyes, which seem to work and don't migrate as easily into the eyes. Another tricky place is the scalp! I was shocked to find sunburn in the part of my hair after a trip to Florida--literally the only place on my body I've ever been burned! Now I never leave the house without a hat!

As a 30+ years aesthetician, I’ve noticed chemical sunscreen irritation (sensitive skin eg using Tretinoin) can lead to skin pigmentation in conscientious, sunscreen zealous clients and also sometimes milia. I get much better results with inorganic (zno + iron oxides) sunscreens hand down 🙌🏻 Excellent video from a lovely Derm.

I don’t like the Fenty spf AT ALL. Every time I used it it was like it melted down in the sun & would get in my eyes and BURN. There was one time I was driving and I was so worried because it started burning my eyes and my vision was blurred. I wear contacts so I think I sweat transferred the spf to my contacts. Anyway, this was a very busy stretch of street with no shoulder or side streets to pull over. It was horrible & it happened more than once with that sunscreen. I tried repeatedly to avoid my eye area & it’s always caused irritation

I finally found the right one for my sensitive skin (as a retinoid user): La Roche Posay Anthelios UV-Mune gel-creme. It blends out completely clear, is waterproof and unscented, isn't greasy, and has great ingredients. It's a little expensive but if you're having an impossible time finding a good one, try it out. Warning, if you get the "ultra-fluid," it can be really greasy, but I recently switched to the gel-creme (same formula) and it is magical. They also have the same formula in different finishes: matte, dry-finish, anti-shine. I've been looking for years for the right brand!

Why did you put a cross on Black Girl Sunscreen? I live in the U.K. and this is a god send to me as there’s not many products I found tailored for our skin, most give the white overcast shadow. I would be interested to know why? this product is so hydrating, gives your skin a beautiful glow and assuming it’s doing what it’s supposed to…I find it very unfair to the users of this product and the company (being its black owned) to put a cross over it without giving an explanation as to why?…very disappointed

@Kathywake23 that's not true or just how you reacted to it, I've been using this product for a few years now, and I've never had any issues with it, its got in my eyes and nothing. In fact it gives your skin a dewey glowy look I actually read the author response to why she put a cross against BGSS and it had nothing to do with the company's product, she was supposedly highlighting the fact not to use sprays or powders and one of BGSS was a powder. Very careless reporting by her, she could have just used non branded items to highlight this. I recommend Blsck Girl Sunscreen to everyone I know. I really passionate about this product as I spent years not wearing sunscreen because in the UK I couldn't find any tailored for black skin. She needs to be mindful on how she does her research and exposing brands.

The real tea is that when there’s so many rules, options and confusion/fear, people are just not going to wear sunscreen at all. Mental health is more important sunscreen because it affects the present moment whereas if you don’t wear sunscreen you MIGHT get something years from now. When people are stressed they’re just going to fall into what feels good. I personally have the bandwidth to watch videos, do research and comb through it all but I bet a lot of people just don’t
