Strycova has a legitimate gripe with Venus. It's not about rather the calls were right or wrong. It's the time Venus is taking before she challenges. She sees her ball is going out, and then decides to challenge. A challenge has to be immediate, which is what umpires tell players before every match. Eva Asderaki, the umpire, should know this, and I've seen her numerous times tell players they've waited too long to challenge and the call stands.
@lars653
@lars653 7 жыл бұрын
Strycova is right twice there, in the two last situations Venus challenged too late, she already hit the ball, saw it went out and then challenged, that is not allowed. A challenge that shouldn't have been allowed isn't justified when the challenger is on the right end because that is what you are suggesting. When you want to challenge you have to do it instantly.

you know what would really be uplifting?! if the opponent spoke up & said yes, it was an incorrect call. that would be inspiring & good sportsmanship. i saw that once at a professional soccer game.

If a linesman calls a very close ball in when it's just out, that's not a bad call. If he calls it out when it's just barely in, that IS a bad call, because you are suppose to give the benefit of the doubt to the player who hit the ball. So all of these calls were bad calls, since each was an IN ball called OUT. Remember, there were no electronic calls until 2005, so bad calls happened all the time, and intimidating linesmen was part of the game.

About Barbora-Venus incident, despite the text commentary written against Barbora, it must be said that she is in the right. The ultimate truth of whether the ball is in or out is irrelevant - because if you don't challenge it you will never know. The timing of the challenge is important. Venus in the 2nd challenge did it after she hit the ball and was called out. So the ball continued to be in play. She should stop the point right there if she has a dispute and ask for a challenge. So if the ball is out, she will get the point, if it is in, the point will be replayed or whatever will be the umpire's. So Barbora has every right to be upset at the series of late challenges by Williams and actually the umpire should reject those challenges. Not sure why they were accepted.

@stephenvalentinemusi
@stephenvalentinemusi 6 жыл бұрын
The first challenge, Venus got the attention of the umpire. She was in conversation with the umpire. She's within her right to challenge there. Players have been doing that since the system was introduced. The second point, the point is stopped because Venus hit the ball out. So she could challenge there, because the point has been stopped. No other shot was played. Had Barbora hit another shot and Venus hit that one back, she would not be able to challenge. On the third one, Venus was looking at the mark once she returned the ball and, again, the point was dead. No other shot was played. She's allowed to challenge. People look at the marks on the court before challenging all the time. AND Venus interrupted the score being called, meaning that Asderaki wasn't paying attention either and Venus had to get her to look in her direction. Why should she be denied a challenge if the umpire was looking the other way?
@DexterHaven
@DexterHaven 6 жыл бұрын

Honestly Venus was challenging way too late. Djokovic once got a ball back looked at it and wanted to challenge but the referee said it is too late even though he took 3 seconds after hitting the ball back and Venus took like 5 and the referee even started to say the score.

What do you mean poor Barbora? The only reason she was in the position to complain about those challenges was because there were several wrong calls that benefited her. I always do think it's comical when players complain about a "late" challenge (especially one that comes after a shot that kills the point) because to them they'd rather win the match by having a bad call go their way then to have the true result revealed.

just because the call is wrong doesn't mean its right to challenge, if they play the ball then miss it then challenge its not right at all, if they wanted they could stop play and challenge, whoever is doing the big white subtext doesn't truly play tennis or understand the rules fully, if you play the outball and ur ball goes out you can't challenge its too late

Someone who knows Tennis can answer? Player A and Player B are in the middle of a rally: Player A hits the ball close to a line, then Player B hits it back, but right after Player B has hit the Ball back, one of the linesmen calls *"OUT"* (for the shot that Player A made that landed close to the line, but called OUT after Player B has already hit back). Is this considered a "OUT"? Or should the players have kept playing?

So I play tennis for my school, we got a team and everything. School level tennis don’t have umpires, so we and whoever is around can be the judges of what is in and out. There was this one time we were playing doubles and our opponents kept saying out and once even said I was too close to the net when really I wasn’t, we brought out our coaches and they kept quiet, I was pissed, we need umpires for this sort of stuff in school cuz I swear I almost threw those two my racket.

Barbora’s right. Venus hits the ball, waits to see if it’s good and if it isn’t, THEN she challenges to salvage the point. You can’t keep your cake and eat it too by challenging that late. I’ve never seen a player get away with such late challenges.

Moral of the story is not don't waste challenge, it is get rid of line judges. They are redundant. Any ball that bounces within 1cm of the line should be auto-called with hawkeye making a beep if out.

You have to challenge a dubious call immediately - you don't have the luxury of, "oh, let me think about this one for a minute." But it is the call of the umpire if he/she will allow a player to challenge after waiting for some time.

That's why the judges who are behind the players, should no longer be there, because if there is a hawk's eye, they should no longer be there, in fact they get in the way, make the player impossible and the worst is wrong with his vision. They must come out and never exist.
@Jejdjejbfjf

Umpires and linesmen need to take more responsibility for bad calls. Even if players have no more challenges or if the hawkeye can't work, if the audience is able to see it through replay, these umpires and linesmen need to take responsibility.
