As an RPer in FFXIV, I will say that the first time that you RP and you get into a "relationship" with another character and you start to become really close friends with the person behind the character, it's really easy to let in character feelings start to seep into real feelings. I'll gladly admit that because when you start, you don't know how to separate those feelings until you've got at least a couple months of experience doing it.

I started role-playing when I was 14 and I confused my roleplay character with myself regularly. In character relationships were my first experience with romance, so when I caught the IC SO chatting up someone else, I would go ballistic. Not proud of that, but now at 24 it's taught me a lot of lessons, both about love and friendships. I still roleplay. I'm in a committed relationship of 4 years, and while erotic roleplay is off the table completely (for good reason), my husbando doesn't mind me having an in character relationship, because he knows I've detached myself from it entirely. It's just another writing prompt, at this point. Sometimes characters get a crush or fall in love, and it's alright to act that out.

Today's story reminds me of the time a friend of mine came to me with a photograph of two girls in his bed... And he was like "Hey I really like my new friend John, that I know has been your buddy for a while now... but... is this his girlfriend? Cause I hooked up with these two the other day, and John's always talking about how lucky he is to be dating the girl of his dreams... and I just saw them together earlier today..." And sure enough, when I looked, there she was, and that photo was not innocent. One friend basically slept with another friend's girlfriend who he didn't know was the other friend's girlfriend as they'd not done introductions yet, and now we had this extremely awkward situation going on... And it didn't end there. Even though both "John" and his GF had been virgins when they met, and the friend with the photo "was clean"... somehow John ended up with VD... And because I lived right next to a block full of nightclubs... around this time I started noticing his girl friend 'doing the rounds' in them often. Life lesson there is... once someone cheats on you - it's like that candy that you just dropped on the floor... don't pick it up and eat it, you don't know what's gotten into it anymore. If they cheat on you once, there's odds they've played the field.
