Thank you for providing the information and insight that I desired to know prior to my appointment today. Turns out, I had both of my full arms done, and my neck. It wasn’t anything to fear whatsoever, even though it was uncomfortable a few times - but nothing too crazy or near worthy of tears or fear. One thing that no one has spoken of in the video comments on any of these videos is the soreness that comes quickly afterward! LOL! Just hydrate, take some Aleve, and relax… I am so grateful for this technology that can help diagnose my issues and help me, and others, to heal!!!

UPDATE: 1st, need to say that this video covers everything one needs to know. It is well done. 2nd, had my NCS & EMG yesterday. Tolerated the nerve CS well like how the doctor describes here. The EMG was more of a challenge. At some points I never felt needle go in. A few times once the needle was in, it became mildly painful. The last needle after insertion was extremely painful and I yelled (this was in lower right leg). End of update. Have an EMG and nerve conduction study tomorrow and I have been freaking out. When I first heard of this test I thought I'd never get one of these. I'll hopefully remember to post my update tomorrow.

I hope this comment will help others! I just had a nerve conduction test done this afternoon. NOT what I expected at all, IT WAS FAR WORSE! The arms and legs were tolerable, but I had to have the "sitckies" on my nose and the ground on my forehead. The probe was on my face in front of my right ear. The PAIN was UNBEARABLE! IT BROUGHT ME TO TEARS! AS DID THE STIMULATION OF THE TRAPAZIOD MUSCLE! Had I known how painful these 2 areas would be, i would have made arrangements for super strength pain killers in advance! 2 1/2 hours I still have a screaming headache and my left arm feels like a lead weight! ASK YOUR NEUROLIGIST IN ADVANCE WHAT AREAS O THE BODY ARE BEING TESTED, AND ASK FOR PAIN MANAGEMENT IN ADVANCE!

@@DrAndreaFurlan hey Dr Andrea, I have previously been diagnosed with severe carpal tunnel plus diabetic neuropathy. I'm a type 1 diabetic. I have had an EMG two years ago. I never had the needle test just the electrode test with stickers and wires. So at the time the technicians were very shocked (excuse the pun) I felt nothing as they turned the level of shock up and up to very high levels. Eventually it triggered my carpal tunnel pain with pins and needle sensation at the highest level of shock the machine could go. What does this mean? In my test they attached electrodes and asked me to let them know if I felt anything the test took forever as they increased and I felt nothing... Shortly after I was pregnant and was unable to access the operation for my carpal tunnel syndrome. I now have been referred for another EMG and have severe pain from carpal tunnel the majority of the time day and night. My grip has become weak I drop things frequently and there's signs my muscle in my palm have wastage. I appreciate your video and wonder if you recommend steroid injections for carpal tunnel syndrome (I've had 3 of these already over past yrs) or the decompression operation? I'm nervous to have another nerve study after last time where although not painful it was not a comfortable sensation when the electrodes were turned to their highest. Why do the technicians turn the electro waves higher and higher until the patient can feel something?

Doc, military veteran who crushed my hand. Middle finger A2 pulley was rupto, grafted my wrist to repair the A2 pulley twice. All three nerves in my arms were affected, entrapment surgery on all three 12 years ago. Large dose of Gabappentin to alleviate nerve pain, I don't use my right hand much, especially when flexion outward is involved. My first two EMG tests were horribly painful. I am bone to bone in my knee, Synvisc injections without lidocaine. I don't consider myself a whim or overly sensitive patient. Today's EMG test wasn't pleasant but unlike previous exams the "needle" inserted only measured my nerves. Last EMG test electrical current was sent down the needles. Horrible, pee your shorts painful. I tried researching why today'd test didn't include that horrible painful portion. I "failed" the radial nerve portion, not a surprise as flexing out has remained difficult since my crush injury. I tried researching the different EMG tests. Your vlog explained the process and reason for the tests better than most. I didn't enjoy the process but was very thankful to not have the horrible portion repeated. Can you explain the differnt tests and maybe a reason for them? Should another VA physician schedule another EMG test I will not stress so much. It wasn't bad but I do hope to not have it again...

I have an ICD and am curious to know if any precautions need to be taken for those with implantable devices? I am new to the MELAS diagnosis and am having to see if nerve damage has occurred as a result. I can handle pain and discomfort (frequent flier of docs and hospitals). I mainly want to make sure they check everything possible to make sure my nerve conductions are good. MELAS is neurodegenerative/neuromuscular and a recent mri shows scattered white brain matter tissue changes, I’ve had stroke like events and extreme pain so I know neuro changes are happening. Knowledge is power and I appreciate your educational video. Thank you.

EMG barely felt the needle. I have herniated discs in low back , severe bilateral leg pain, and numbness in my foot/toes. My symptoms usually start when I’m standing/sitting to long (>20-30 min). When I lay down the symptoms seem to lessen. I feel that my pain is more severe from my low back to the knees. My question is why did they do the testing below the knees and on the feet? Instead of my upper thighs? Also, I don’t recall them asking me to contract my muscles during the EMG?

Post radiation therapy following breast cancer knocked out several of my axillary nerves. I did not find the EMG particularly painful, but just as I thought we were done, he shoved a needle into my thenar eminence. Now that hurt! The EMG basically validated what we already knew: the nerves to my infraspinatus & supraspinatus nerves were not at all being innervate; I still cannot abduct my arm. It's been a while, & now I have pain in that arm constantly & in addition to not being able to abduct, I periodically get muscle spasms in that arm. I was warned about the chemotherapy, but was not at all for nerve damage from radiation.

I'm having trouble balancing on one leg even to put my socks on while standing. All this occurred after I stacked a cord of wood. I had 2 EMGs, the first one showed nerve root involvement, but the Dr.attempted, and neurologist, told me it was carpal tunnel syndrome. I failed to ask, because I didn't know better, if the EMG showed any signs that my "carpal tunel syndrome" might be caused by my neck. I asked my Dr. Later, as recommend by a different specialist, " does the E.M.G. show that these nerve issues are stemming from my neck. He dance around that answer, so after the 3rd time, in a raised voice I said, "yes or no, does the EMG show that I have nerve problems stemming from my neck". He said yes. I had neck surgery 25 years ago. Same problems again! I decided to ask the neurologist who did my last E.M.G. if she noticed any nerve problems stemming from my neck. She said yes, but diagnosed me with carpal tunnel syndrome. Because Dr.s lye and carpal tunnel is a cheap surgery, I asked the neurologist if it was possible to distinguish nerve roots stemming from the neck vs carpal tunnel syndrome or any other nerve damage above the hand. She said no. It is all subjective based on a series of specific questions, reflex checks, etc. I found this video useful, because I didn't know that an EMG will only pick up on major nerves, but in addition I would like to add that they will also pick pick up on damages to nerve roots ( in the neck).

I had cauda equina 22 years ago and it left me with nerve damage to my right side, buttocks to toes, due to late and misdiagnosis. I was told I had a uti. I was diagnosed with spinal stenosis 10 years ago, it was first discovered in 2004, 3 years after my emergency surgery. Would it be worth mentioning these tests to a consultant? I have an appointment to see one about getting another mri done because I have new numbness, pain and tingling. I've also completely lost the feeling on the outside of my right foot but I think these tests might be more accurate and beneficial. I would appreciate your feedback, thanks

If a muscle is not activating because of a nerve impingement, what does the EMG show or say? Can it tell where along the body the nerve is compressed? thank you

Yes, that is one of the uses of EMG.

Cool. Ive had a nerve conduction study (with EMG) in the past, and I have another one today. I have spastic paraparesis in my legs, along with cavovarus deformities in my feet (primarily the left). Honestly, I found the process quite relaxing - similar to what I would think acupuncture with electricity is like. Fascinating description, I really like your analogy. :o)

I went today and the nerve and muscle test took less than 30 minutes. One technician and the other the Neurologist. Still waiting until my Nurse Practitioner gives me a diagnosis. I go for a MRI next Wednesday. That will be it I hope. I thought the EMG was too quick between the two test.

If the test is only for one member, then the two parts (NCS and EMG) may take around 30 minutes.

Mine was absolutely awfull. Electrical shocks felt like I was getting electrocuted. The doctor had problems with the machine and was very frustrated and in a bad mood. He kept zapping me in each point 10 times really hard. The needle was thick and the doctor pushed it in really hard and deep. He was constantly stirring it when it was in my muscle. I have been through alot in my life. But this test was a really traumatic experience. Before I got the tests my symptoms where all gone. But I decided to go through with it since I already had the appointment. After the tests everything is 100x than before. Pins and needles in legs, feet, arms and hands even in places I never had them before. How can I get back to the state i was in before the EMG. It ruined my life

She only covered slow nerve conduction Velocity related to the mylein. No Response on a nerve conduction study, which is a result i had, is apparently related to damage to axons.

Hello, I had this test done a few days ago at the VA and I am in so much pain. I’d like to think I handle pain well considering I had my last baby all natural. However, when doing the NCS it was extremely painful to me, not tear break down however, it felt like my legs were being put through a wall socket everytime he would zap me (the doc/resident). I can just remember the pain from as a kid putting a knife in a wall socket- it hurt! My question is this… during my test, when I layed down on my stomach, he put the nerve stickers on the back of my legs. He continued to zap me 7 different times and each time the waves were getting more intense. What does this mean? Currently waiting on my doctor to give me my results. Since having the test done, my legs from knees down hurt so bad!

Thank you Dr Andrea. This is extremely clear and helpful. My only concern about having the tests is the needle electrode. Unfortunately I had an immediate and extreme reaction to a diabetes monitor with tiny filament placed in my arm. We certainly were not expecting that! I will tell the doctor about that before that part of the test. Fingers crossed it is not a problem.

@Dr. Andrea Furlan hey Dr Andrea, I have previously been diagnosed with severe carpal tunnel plus diabetic neuropathy.

I had a Nerve Conduction Study Friday. I have a herniated disk at L4-L5 with leg weakness , knee pain and numbness in my two toes in my right foot. It wasn’t bad at all. I didn’t understand why the technician said they were only doing my foot and not my knee and that would be a separate test. I thought it was for lower extremities. Can you please explain why they only tested the nerves in my foot and not the nerves above my knees? Thank you kindly!

My doctor suggested i get a nerve conduction test to determine the source of the pain i feel in my left glute. There appear to be many possibilities. I want to be clear about the capabilities of this test. Will this test be able to differentiate between (1) referred pain from a disk bulge...sciatia (2) piriformis syndrome (3) nerve damage (4) bursitis (5) SI Joint problem (6) labral tear at hip joint?

I suffered severe pain during my tests. I didn't need the test to confirm my nerve damage, I know my nerves have been damaged but I often wondered if the doctors were just checking to make sure or that they didn't necessarily believe me! Anyway, does extreme pain during the test represent or confirm damage?
@DrAndreaFurlan Жыл бұрын
Hi Gary, pain during the exam is not used to confirm or refute the diagnosis.

@@DrAndreaFurlan I went through many a painful process on the back of a headfirst fall from 34ft. One of the most painful was getting my jaws unwired but I'd say that the nerve conduction tests were even more painful than that.

If my comprehensive nerve conduction study checking for peripheral neuropathy due to pins and needles in soles of feet comes back completely normal, what else could be the cause for this irritating tingling in the feet when I put pressure on the feet when standing? Nobody can tell me what the cause of symptoms are! I’m type 2 diabetic but they tell me no neuropathy. Very confused! ( sensory exam has been done and is normal)

@@DrAndreaFurlan ok thanks for this great info. Unfortunately my GP is literally at a loss to explain my condition. I am currently accepting the TMS Mind Body approach theorized by Dr John Sarno which describes how stress and emotions can be at play with individuals experiencing pain and bizarre numerous other symptoms in the physical body. Certain personality types have experienced symptoms to which no structural or countless other tests yield no reason for the pain or symptoms ( I also am experiencing moderate to severe hip and groin pain that actually alternates fro each side and moves around on a daily basis- disabled from it) So the only conclusion one can draw is that my condition is of a psychological source. Apparently, changing the mindset and practicing indifference to the symptoms and going about your life regardless send the message to the brain that you are safe and it no longer needs to inflict symptoms. Many have recovered from Tension Myoneural Syndrome through some TMS coaching and rewiring neuro pathways.

I just finished a road cycling tour of Romania(amateur - 2500 km, 20 consecutive days) and in my left hand i still feel theese numbness, tingling in the first 3 fingers, cause i just use more my left hand and it was more connected to the handlebar of my bike and just put more pressure on my left back hand...I had 20 consecutive days of cycling but the sensation was starting after the half of the tour..let's say 10-12 days. Should I be worry?🙏

@DrAndreaFurlan2 жыл бұрын
Hi Christina, pain to needle insertion does not mean anything. Our brain can feel pain differently, it depends on how much attention we are paying to it, if we are distracted, if our muscles are more relaxed, and many other factors can influence how much pain we feel.
