You need to work out how much current each coil will draw. Measure the resistance of the winding with a simple multimeter, then, work out the current - current = Voltage/Resistance. Make sure the cable you're using can handle that amount of current, also, you'll need higher current rated cable as the voltage will drop over distance, reducing the efficiency of the electro magnets, plus, burn out the cable. Neat idea though 👍

Its not easy to see if you wired the coils in series or parallel. If wired in parallel, and connected to mains, they could draw excessive current. If connected in series, and connected to mains, the current will be 1/3 of what each transformer is rated for. On the other hand instead of connecting directly to mains, one might try rectifying the AC to pulsed DC. But consider, one transformer has enough inductive reactance to limit 120vac flowing through it. Rectifying the AC to DC would cause too much current to flow in one single coil, but having three in in series might provide just enough copper resistance and inductive reactance to limit rectified AC.
@drasticg5 жыл бұрын
I will double check i get confused with series and parrarell
@kreynolds11235 жыл бұрын
@@drasticg I just did some double checking of my own in a circuit simulator. tinyurl.com/y2v8rotg Even placing inductive coils in series on the DC side of a full bridge rectifier, without a current limiter, ends up drawing way toooooo much current. If you want each electromagnet at full power on AC, then you want it in parallel, but have it on a circuit, and circuit breaker that can handle the full load. if they are in series, then you will get just 1/3rd the current. which means you will get just 1/3rd of the power at the same voltages as one MOT will get.
@zanedaugherty55645 жыл бұрын
@@kreynolds1123 i just commented on this video and then seen your comments. I have so many questions for a man of your knowledge. But do you have a suggestion on a website, page, blog, book, etc... on the electrical side of building these things? I've started one of these builds and i have jumped in head first. It is some of the most interesting stuff that ive done in a while. Thanks for the advice you posted
@kreynolds11235 жыл бұрын
@@zanedaugherty5564 a well rounded background to aid in designing and understanding circuits is fairly diverse. There are certainly a bunch of places one can goto but understanding them takes time, and a little guidance can certainly be helpful. I dont have the time to write a book but I'll suggest a few search terms to start with to understand this circuit 1) "ohms law of DC and AC circuits" 2) "Impedence and inductive reactance" 3) "resistance and reactance in series and parallel circuits" 4) "reactive power, apparent power, real power" The circuit simulator I linked to earlyer is a great tool to play with helping cement the ideas you learn as well as model circuits you would like to try. You can measure voltage amps watts in peak average and rms. Magnetic fields and field strength, though may seem simple, are really complex. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_field. There are simplified versions or ways of viewing them, and tools for calculating the magnetic fields, flux, and fields strengths, and inductance of coils with and without magnetic permeable materials. There's really to much for me to teach here but a wealth of info can be found on the net.

@CraftAero5 жыл бұрын
@@drasticg I may have "spoken too soon". My (hobbyist) experience here is with old school, tube amplifier output transformers (OPTs). I've even wound my own using microwave oven transformers (MOTs). We are always careful to align Left & Right OPTs at 90deg. to each other to prevent electromagnetic "cross-talk" between the channels. Putting them "in-line" creates a much larger (combined) magnetic field and we do NOT want the L/R channels combined, obviously. I realize that you've removed the secondary coil. You now have (what we would call) an inductor coil or choke. In my application, this is used to resist changes in current flow. In your application, it freely induces the magnetic field. I'm thinking now, if the coils are all wound in the same direction, alignment may not matter. The winding direction matters because you want the magnets to "agree". (see the right-hand thumb rule) It seems that you've used identical MOTs and you've oriented the input terminals all the same. Shouldn't be a problem there. Let's say your "center post" is North, the outer legs would be South, the fields agree aaaand Bob's your uncle. Somewhere (?) I have a Tesla (magnetic force) mapping software that I've used to space my transformers and HV circuits to eliminate exactly what your goal is. It shows graphically the relationships (influence) between nearby magnetic fields. Unfortunately, Elon Musk has ruined any web search for "Tesla mapping". I have a dozen or so MOTs in the garage. Now I'm too curious and I'll have do some monkeying around this weekend. Two should be enough to do some orientation vs pull-test trials. Keep in mind that your battery charger is current limited for protection, a car battery will NOT be limited and may dump outrageous current into the MOTs. Again, I'll do some dick'n about on this and post here. Full disclosure... I'm a Tool & Die Maker and Mech. Eng. , electrical "toys" and electronics are merely a hobby of mine. I am certainly NOT an authority. At any rate "G", I'm definitely a fan (and new subscriber) of your channel. You have a great attitude and manner about your presentation. Cheers from Canada ! Nice job, but, if you are potting it in resin, all the electrical connections need soldering, not just crimp on tags, as they will develop resistance in time, get hot and the magnetic strength will weaken till the joint fails completely. It will be interesting to see how it performs in the field, (or should that be in the canal?).
@drasticg5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip david
@G1ZQCArtwork5 жыл бұрын
@@drasticg Those crimp on tags are really only for temporary testing, they have a high rate of failure on motor vehicles when they get damp. Always take the plastic sleeve off, push it up the wire out of the way and solder the wire joint, pull the sleeve back down to cover the join. Some shrink wrap would also help as it tends to strengthen the integrity of the join. I always solder my joints to prevent later failures and lower resistance.

Any microwave works? Are the mini transformers different for every model of microwave. I know a lot of microwave have different power of watts... 🤷♂️
@drasticg5 жыл бұрын
Yes any microwave will do but the bigger the microwave the bigger the transformer so you need 3 the same size to build this
