Beautiful gem, Doug. I at one time had the oversize version of this pen, in the same green celluloid. Sold it about 25 years ago, and now I'm getting pangs of nostalgia.

Gorgeous pen. I do like the Canadian version better than the US one. I am still amazed as to how much ink these Vacuumatic pens hold. Beautiful restoration, Doug. Your extractor was well worth the price paid.

I was eagerly waiting for you to restore a Canadian Vacumatic and confirm what I had already read and felt with my 1953: Canadian nibs are more flexible than those in the US. With a perfect bounce. My nib has the behavior of a medium and I love it too much.

Doug, now that you've mastered vac restoration, you should venture into Waterman's Inkvue territory. I have several, from the ordinary to the extraordinary, but I'm too chicken to attempt a repair. I'd like to see you try it first, lol. And the bonus is that the Canadian Inkvues had a vast array of cool celluloid that never made it south of the border (or in the case of Detroit where I am, north of the border).

I enjoy your resurrection videos, especially because I have re-sacked a couple of J-model Esterbrooks; much simpler than doing a complete re-condition, as you do. Two things, though: 1. I didn't have any shellac, so I used Elmer's glue to secure the sac (it seems to hold ok), and 2. I don't have any pure talc, so I used baby talc, which I read somewhere has chemical additives that can cause the sac to deteriorate.
@InkquiringMinds
@InkquiringMinds Жыл бұрын
Get some shellac and talc from fifteenpens.ca/ It is inexpensive and lasts a long time. While you're there, pick up a little bit of silicone grease too!
@wittwittwer1043

@@InkquiringMinds Thanks for the advice on the shellac and talc. I already have grease-type silicone, but I'll try the liquid and see how I like it.

Nib size is stamped on the feed, W for wumbo!😂 great restoration work! the extra shape on the filler button is an amazing little detail, even with the similar celluloid material and general shape, some details really gives it its art deco look compared to the latter model. about that kind of striped acrylic resin, I can't help but to think they'd have to be made painstakingly in layers and for not a great material strength outcome. Classic Pens/LB5 had to do something different to join the acrylic bits horizontally, Leonardo Mosaico is rather thick and sometimes uneven, but its pretty close so... how were those celluloid stock made anyway? it totally escaped my imagination how it should be done economically. pouring thin layers into a tall enough block seems like waay so much effort than pouring colors into a thick enough mold for a plate of acrylic/celluloid stock that's often limited to cracked ice, spaghetti, or pour-over-pour like primary manipulation

I think even early dip pens had tipping on them. But my thoughts for these damaged nibs is, it's for sure better to snip them and use them than scrapping them. I've snipped a few myself. There's only one or two people who do retipping in North America and it costs like $100 or $120 a pop, which is way more than some of these nibs are worth in the first place. I'd probably only save that for some really rare nibs like the old teardrop/keyhole breather hole Parker nibs or something similar. For everything else though, what's the point of leaving it languishing in a parts bin?

I wonder if the difference in the celuloid is reason for the difference in the section material?
@InkquiringMinds

I think it is a part supply thing between Canada and US. Perhaps Toronto couldn’t get the sections shaped from their suppliers.

sir i need your help. i use pilot v7 and uniball eye both rollerball pens. i have not used fountain pens but i want to buy one. so i bought a pilot v pen which is a fountain pen with no refill option ( use and throw). it writes very scratchy i dont like it. i know i have to spend some money to get a real fountain pen. so can you suggest me a fountain pen which writes well without scratchy feel.

The PenBBS 456 is the best Vac for the money but the Asvine 126 isn’t far behind. I’d not trust a TWSBI. The Wing Sung 699 Vac is a nice pen if you like the Pilot 823.

Wow that’s a stonking great nib for that era or is that a more recent edition? Get out the DeLorean Doug,we are going for a drive back in time. You are performing a great service to the pen community. You will have to let a few go though. All adds upto a stunning collection that makes the process of acquiring new, modern pens almost pointless,apart from a 149 with a calligraphy nib.
