Come draw with me as I chat about my 2024 art goals (and fears!) and try out a new set of Paul Rubens "Morandi" oil pastels. I'm also swatching all the individual oil pastel colors in the video, but mostly, I'm painting a John William Waterhouse "The Soul of the Rose" color study to test these pastels in action.

✧ ART MATERIALS & HOW I USE THEM ✧
Mungyo Pastel Papers in a variety of colors: amzn.to/41NTX6j *
I'm using the Paul Rubens "Morandi" oil pastel set, but for painting a study with similar "impasto" textures, any similar soft oil pastels can work.
Blending stumps or q-tips (I prefer the blending stumps, but didn't have time to clean them ^^') amzn.to/3SaDYvT*
For blending stumps, there are a lot of cheap options out there, but I've found that those don't clean well, i.e. sandpaper just makes them fray, and they fall apart quickly. So I personally reach for Staedtler, Derwent, Mungyo, or Faber-Castell that I've accumulated over the years.

I think we are always learning and evolving, that’s what I love about the art journey. These oil pastels are wonderfully creamy.

That's a good reminder - sometimes I feel like I'm stagnant or floundering a bit! And yes, they're so soft and creamy! ♥

i absoultly feel this way. in the lockdown era, i could see the entire world as a moving painting, but my skills were not at all where they needed to be and so i didnt really create because i couldnt create what i saw. And now i am hoping just for inspiration to come back if anything. But i totally relate to having ideas or a way of seeing that you cannot replicate in the way that you wish to with your skill level. i understand that.

Exactly the feeling I meant, I'm glad I got it across - though not glad that it's apparently pretty wide-spread among artists. I've found that going back to low-pressure sketches and drawings every once in a while is a nice way to reset. No big ambitions, no great jumps in skills, just getting the creativity flowing. :) I hope you find lots of inspiration!

@@evydraws-art Yes, low pressure sketches, or even seemingly finished "over glorified sketches" the funny thing is i know everything that inspires me and i love all those things. that magic dust that was in the air is just gone. Yeah, it sucks, but i think it is widespread. i think every artist goes through a period like this, sometimes more than once. I am sorry that you have felt this way. I know you will make the magic you want to make though. You can do this :) and thank you for wishing me inspiration :). i will do my best to get that magic dust back.

@@devernepersonal3636 Magic Dust is a great word for it! We all need more of that, and sometimes there's so much other, regular life dust that obscures it. Wishing us both lots of inspiration this year, for sure! :D

Your goals and fears sound alot like mine. 💖 I get super frustrated by my limitations in what I can create because of my skill level. I do challenge myself but that also means I fall short alot. I think I want to incorporate more studies into my daily practice, studies that align with skills I want to improve. (And soaking up all the theory too! )

You actually phrased it better than I did - a frustration with a skill level limit that only becomes apparent because we challenge it. I didn't want to make any super concrete plans on how to practice, but I started doing some figure studies, slow and with care instead of fast and loose, and really enjoyed those as a starting point... 🥰

it amazes me how nuanced and detailed you work considering how chunky the pastels are. Enjoyed the video, excited to see how you progress! Good luck with your goals :)

Thank you! I'm a bit overly careful with these, they can get messy really fast! I'm excited to learn a lot in 2024 for sure ♥

Hello. You are certainly not alone in your fear of leaving your comfort zone. I think all artists hit that stage every now and then. My own fear is the combination of backgrounds and lighting. I have always adored the way bright sunlight creates such rich shadows and bright highlights but I have yet to capture that balance in a way that looks right. That is my main goal for the year, to study and actually figure it out. Backgrounds have always baffled me because of perspective. While I understand it, I have astigmatism in only my right eye, so I am not yet sure how to compensate for that and have things look as they should, spatially speaking. I hope to learn that too, but lighting first! That's the one I'm more passionate about so maybe once I conquer that, the ball will keep rolling! Good luck in your own goals this year, just remember to have fun with it because if art isn't fun, what's the point?

It really seems like most artists feel similar... And I have to say, the bright sunlight and rich shadow colors you mention are such an amazing, ambitious, and concrete goal! Great choice. And I think getting those "just right" will make for really interesting, beautiful environments no matter if the perspective is perfect or not. :)

@@evydraws-art I agree, which is why I wanted to start there. If I understand lighting the way I really want to, then anything I draw, especially environments will be more believable. Proper value always improves the depth of a picture, even if it's not drawn the best way.

@@evydraws-art I'm going to start with photography, trying to capture the colours in the reference. I found another youtube channel SPECIFICALLY on understanding light and colour. Starting with figuring out what I actually see, seeing if I can recreate the tones in a photograph seems like the right place to start. Ie, what colour is bounced light compared to the surface it's bouncing off of? Are white highlights REALLY white? When are shadows warm vs. cool? These are the things I aim to find out! I am not in a good place to go out to find nice locations to practice currently, so photography is the next best thing.

@@TheBlackHatOutlaw Bounce light is something I still struggle with so much - every new painting is a new challenge! What's the channel you mentioned? I personally really learned a lot from Marco Bucci's art videos about light and colors! And yes, for practice - especially frequently! - I think photographs are just so much more convenient and accessible. Wishing you the best on this practice journey! :D
