Hard pastels can definitely be used for detail or subtle nuances. !! or who loves it for shading techniques or some sharp graphic artistic effects. ❗☝️

Thank you! I actually *love* the student grade Pentel for first layers and for details. I like their small size and their firmness. Knowing that the artist grade will give me all the aspects I love from the student grade, with the additional pigmentation/opacity of the artist grade, makes these seem well worth the cost. Thank you!

I like the firmness of the Pentel oil pastels too. I just wish the artist grade were available open stock.

Great review. I was really surprised there is no information included about this set. Every product I ever bought while living in Japan, include cheaper stationary items would come with instructions, and Japanese artist materials always seem to have very detailed pamphlets included that discuss things like lightfastness, colour name, opacity, how to mix new colours etc etc. It was kind of shocking to just see art supplies and nothing else! I also had to chuckle that at the end you sneakily fix the iris, even though its just a fun sketch to test the product out. Once I notice something like that, I would also be compelled to fix it as well.

I agree, there's usually a lot of info included, that's why I was surprised. Lol, as I was talking, the iris was bugging me so much I had to to something about it, hehe!

I have never seen the artist version of these oil pastels before, very interesting. I agree though, it's a deal breaker in they are not available open stock. For the price of the box you could grab a couple sennelier or other open stock ones to replace them.

I’m not sure light resistant is the same as lightfastness, sounds like a weasel marketing word haha Thanks for showing these, I had no idea they exist!

(still watching...) if you have a moment and are willing to answer, how do they compare to the neopastel? I know they are a league apart in quality and price, but in general- is the Pentel Professional stickier? I hate sticky, smooshy oil pastels, I'd love to find a good brand that's firm but still very opaque and blendable and layerable.

The Pentel professional isn't stickier. However, I do like the Neopastel better for many reasons. First I know it's a great brand and great quality. I think their opacity is very good and I love that they are creamy but firm enough for details. And finally the biggest selling point, in my opinion, is that they are easy too find, and available open stock.

@@Sandrinesgallery thanks so very much for taking the time to answer. I'm so tempted with the Neopastels- I have everything that Caran puts out (including both version of Neocolor crayons...) , art supplies wise. But I've been through so many brands of oil pastels (Sennelier, Rubens, Mungyo, Shiva oil sticks) and I ultimately wind up donating them because they stay so "smudgy" after application, and oil sticks are just too huge for fine details. I suppose I am looking for an oil pastel that cures/dries down a bit, or at least applies a bit dry and less likely to smudge, or oil sticks that are the size of oil pastels. Oh, well, I'll keep my fingers crossed for something in the future. Thank you again for your response, and for these helpful videos!

@@gingerblue To me, it's the only downside of oil pastels, they never dry. I don't believe you'll find a brand that will be exactly what you're looking for. That said, when I tried painting with the Neopastels, I blended them a lot and the final picture wasn't very thick. Then I applied a couple of layers of the Sennelier d'Artigny fixative spray, and it really helped with the smudging. I guess I could apply even more layers, but I'm not sure if it will completely prevent smudges. But I'm perfectly happy with the results I got.

@@Sandrinesgallery Thank you *so* much for all this information, and for your thoughtful replies, and all these videos. I think I might go with the Neopastels- I keep coming back to oil pastels and while I wish there were a brand that eventually cured, I think I can get a result I'd like with the Neopastel (opaque coverage, but not smooshy or gloopy). Thank you again!

from what i looked up i have heard that they are not lightfast (pentels) and that there is no set standard for lightfastness on oil pastels. i am absolutely not sure if that is true or not. but that is the only information i could find and what has just led me to this video.
@Sandrinesgallery

That's interesting. Thank you. I don't expect much from Pentel as far as lightfastness is concerned. To me they are more of an office supply company, but they have a few nice art supplies that I enjoy using.

I just bought a set of the regular ("cheap") Pentels, and they do have a nasty smell, "gasoline" is about right. I even feel bad giving them away to other people.

I bought the regular pentels and they are basically crayons ! They don't blend, they smear, and you can't layer at all ( at most 2 layers )
