The Gym is my stage I shall not want is my motto. I'm in my sixties and girls at the Gym think I'm in my early forties. Full head of hair and excellent genes. I've never looked this good in my entire life. I'm looks/maxed out to the max and more. All I have to is maintain it. I get validation from girls all the time. I think the problem people have with the idea of minimalism is that you have to live like a broke college kid or you have to be some kind of a monk. No, it means you just don't waste your money on shit you don't need, especially to impress other people. You get what you want, but most importantly, you live. It's not complicated.

I'm on the fence about this idea. On one hand if your goal is to be single and just enjoy your own life without caring about the opinion of others, then this makes sense. But what about men who want to attract the hottest girl? In order to increase your sexual market cap you have to have something that signals your status. Where do you draw the line between materialism and social hierarchy signaling?

Everything I own fits in one room, I don't have a car (hike/bike wherever I need to go, benefit of a small town) haven't turned on the TV in about 10 years, it's just a conversation piece at this point. I got to see the world while falling out of airplanes and getting shot at in the Army, and now at 50 after a divorce 20 years ago, I spend my money on camping gear/weapons/computer parts and am blissfully living a minimalist, solitary existence. I'm lucky to have a boss with many of the same interests as me, and we have great conversations on topics ranging from quantum mechanics/philosophy/blacksmithing/bushcraft/theology/politics, the list goes on. He is one of the rare ones that has an amazing wife and daughter, and one of THE most incredible backyards I've ever seen, built by hand by himself including two ponds for frogs and crayfish (damn good eating if you like crawdads and frog legs, which I do) and an amazing firepit that we can sit by and ramble on for hours sipping whisky at. Other than him, I have one other that I consider a "real" friend, guy I trained almost 10 years ago and we still see each other almost daily, damn good guy. I spent a year on walkabout, camping all over Colorado and Montana living off the land and carrying only what I could hump in my rucksack. I went weeks without seeing/hearing another human, just being at peace in nature. When the only voice you hear is your own, you can do some deep, proper introspection and appreciation for the world around you. Oddly, I have more people wanting to interact with me the more I've become less interested in "society", they find me odd, but seem fascinated by my refusal to be part of "the machine". I think a lot of it might just be simple envy, they at least on some level understand they're slaves to a system that doesn't give a damn about them, but are unable/unwilling to unplug and go their own way. Most people have never truly tested themselves, and have not the slightest clue who they are and what they're capable of. They live lives of quiet desperation as the saying goes. As far as female companionship goes, I long ago accepted that the odds are horribly skewed against it (I think Aaron stated something like 2.7% are marriageable material in The Book of Numbers) and simply act with polite disinterest. I need to follow Aaron's advice about "spend it, you earned it" as I'm a natural cheapskate and have to force myself to drop money on anything I don't deem as "essential". Having been to Europe/Korea/Japan/Panama/UK and various places too horrible to mention, I've decided to focus on seeing more of the USA. I've never been to the Northeast and would love to hop the Amtrak and see Maine/New Hampshire/Rhode Island, I think that'll be my next adventure.

No one is willing to acknowledge that we are exiting an era of convenience that is a fluke when compared to the rest of human existence. As a minimalist I've relinquished my ambitions to keep up with the modern consumption jones in exchange to being very self subsistent, to the extent that I live and operate my business on a rich man's property, because I've spent my life absorbing and trialing skills and techniques, while he is very one sided and consumed by responsibilities. Everything I own fits in the back of my truck, and is of quality that can be passed down as heirlooms, or is otherwise a bulk consumable, able to be sold at a rate greater than I purchased it (garden fertilizers and greenhouses, exc). Anytime I've needed to move and don't have a plan, I'll buy a $1-2k utility trailer, throw $200 insulation and interior into it, live in it on a leased property until I find a house, then sell the utility trailer for 1.5x what I paid. The biggest perk to minimalism for me, is as someone who makes only $45-50k a year, i save over 20-30k per year, and have gotten to the point at age 35 where I have every material item I've ever wanted. Air rifles, custom hiking backpacks/sleepbags/tents, every tool to build anything, all titanium cooking ware, all silk clothing, tons of wool blankets, decent computer with drawing tablet. I stopped working for the past four months and took 5 online classes, plus dedicated 10 hours a day to digital art, because I have nothing to hold me back otherwise. I also know enough people in my community that I run into someone I know everytime I go to the grocery store, and I get plenty of female attention, especially from the new flock of interns I avoid every year. The biggest downside i've noticed in staying single in this lifestyle, is when a friend visited me on her birthday, one of her friend's dog sat next to me in a car ride, and the warmth of another living being against me, startled my mind in a way that woke up a sleeping emotional side, because of how long it had been since I felt any warmth. That's my own doing though, because I avoid relationship with transient women, and battle with workaholism, 10-12+ hours no days off, working for myself.

Something different in conversation! Well,.... I was amazed at the technology in 2-cycle engines used in snowmobiles these days. The Rotax engines used in Ski-doo's don't mix the gas with the oil. The engine uses direct fuel injection squirting gas only into the cylinders at the right time. Oil is pressure fed to the bearings and other important points within the engine. As a result these engines use very little oil. That's great as then the oil smoke emissions are very low. Note that air is still sucked into the crankcase and eventually finds its way into the cylinder so a minute amount of oil still finds its way to be burned. But the amount is miniscule compared to so many years ago. Yeah, that's the kind of conversations I like to have. And no, you want to glaze over a woman's eyes instantly? Just bring up this subject. Just wanted to add my $0.02. There's a difference between true minimalism and frugalism. Actual minimalism involves trying to minimize one's possesions. Frugalism involves reducing ones expenditures. The difference is that sometimes frugalism requires one to purchase certain possesions in the short term to minimize long-term expenses. For example someone buying land in order to have a large garden then buying a large freezer to store the produce of the garden during the non-growing seasons. Ralph Nader is another example. When he was younger, he purchased a few dozen pairs of shoes in order to get a bulk discount (and because he found a brand that he really liked). He was then able to avoid buying shoes for several decades as a result.

Didn't realize Cappy was a local. Tools, I couldn't get along w/o the full compliment of hand tools. It has always surprised me how few people own tools, know how to use them or hesitate to borrow them. Can't be a minimalist, I own too many tools.

Ex would try to shame me for my minimalism. She would get so mad when I hit her with "I'll measure my results against yours any day. Well you're older (41 vs 34). Ok. Let's go back to 34. Explain my results then. I loved watching her skirm.
