If I remember correctly, Sea monsters on historical maps meant dangerous waters
@OwlFromValimus3 жыл бұрын
That would explain the Charybdis and Scylla location that took so many ships back then in the ancient Greek. So, good point you got there. Also the old mermaids that were half women half birds which attacked sailors in the Mediterranean Sea.

Video Idea(s) (that I'd love to see): Maps by purpose - In world maps are ofcourse drawn for an in world purpose. What key features, details, and styles correspond to these different purposes? How does the key/legend and imagery change to portray the important information? (Sea trade map = Illustration of currents and winds + compass/latitude lines/sea monsters + Port information (goods, prices, services); Travelling circus map = travel routes/dangers + information about towns (laws, dispositions, entertainment preferences); Inflate the kings ego = colours + gold filligree + exaggerated proportions Maps with super unusual purposes - How to figure out how to draw a map for a super unusual purpose. What information does it need to portray? How can that be made pretty? How can that be made intuitive/accessible for players/readers who aren't going to have experience with that type of map before? (Map for sailing a magic, sky ship = multi height wind currents + high altitude springs for water + magical considerations for flying (idk ley lines?); Time travel mechanics = representing parallel universes, paradoxes, linchpin events + representing the events or status quo of different timelines + anything pertinent to how time travel and it's effects work in your system; The planes = Representing 'planes' graphically + representing their occupants, physical properties, etc. + representing the whole multiverse 'layout' such as spiritual relationships, travel between them (I'm thinking Yggdrasil maps)) Historic maps - how to draw them (and maybe a touch about why they looked like that did and how to make sense of them)

funny how both the giant squid and octopus eventually were proven to exist, the one just lives very deep, the other in the pacific... as for most of the other sea monsters whales were probably the main inspiration... on many maps these beasts seem to be exhaling powerful jets of air after all. people were pretty familiar with dolphins, and most knew these were also mammals, but whales were more obscure.. have you heard of the walvischboeck? a 16th century book that's kept in the city library of Antwerp... Adriaen Coens was one of the first to do some serious observations of whales, but his drawings are still similar to the earlier maps :D
