If you have found this lesson helpful, please check out my other playlists where I go in depth on drawing. I cover basics as well as advanced techniques for ALL skill levels. Also, check the links in the description and join our Creature Design Workshop Discord! P.S. I made a mistake in the video referencing Alligator Snapping Turtles as having terrifying teeth. I was wrong. They only have beaks. What I meant to say was the Leatherback Sea Turtle!

I’m trying to apply the chaos but in a controlled fashion to my monthly creature design. But, my question is was this cylinder exercise more to make something from a tube/cylinder shape or was it more in line with the cube exercise like from last week designing in perspective?

I had an extensive portfolio stolen when I was young. One drawing in particular took me thirteen full days to complete. After losing over ten years of drawings and sketches, my entire life's work at the time, I gave up drawing as a result, believing I could never duplicate or replace the emotion and energy I originally put into them. I'm much older now, life happens, and things tend to fade over time. I don't think I'll ever forgive myself for giving up on drawing. The life lesson here I think is, never give up on your youthful dreams, if you do, it will haunt you later in life.

Yo, I just picked up a good pencil, Pentel brush pen and some watercolors after thirty years of blaming my mom for blocking me literally from going to art school. Turns out that time in my youth wasn't wasted and the things I'm painting are satisfying, if not fully professional yet. Protect yourself, but don't think you don't have time. Five minutes a day of intentional drawing would start to heal your regrets. I believe it.

I lost close to a decade of my own artwork but through a series of life choices I followed my ex husband down. Some was left behind or sold very cheaply to pay bills. Some was thrown out by landlords in rushed evictions. I actually gave up for probably close to five years and now that it's been so long, it feels like the skill set I had when I initially quit has been lost. It's very frustrating but I actually feel just a bit better knowing I'm not alone in such a specific experience.

Just wanted to like and comment to help you in the KZbin algorithm. I'm an amateur pencil artist focusing on portraits, figures, animals, ect. Been drawing for about a decade now and while I have become good enough to do some commissions I still consider myself an amateur because I don't put enough energy/time into it beyond hobby level. I lost some of my motivation and skill after having a kid so now I'm trying to get back into the groove and your videos have been a huge help! Thanks so much!

Thank you for another great video sharing your wealth of knowledge on art! My biggest take-away from this video is that our primary reference (in this case the cylinder) does not have to be the main shape of our subject, but can be a guideline for other shapes. As for the creatures name, I like the name mentioned earlier from below "Boblin"

Your tutorials are easy to follow and the fact you are loose with your drawings so people don't panic when they feel they made a mistake because there are no mistakes really. I was thinking also not only the snapping turtle mouth but also a hagfish mouth

'Edgar'. I love naming things in a contradicting way. Scary monster that looks like it should have a name in latin or just mean 'Devourer of the Dead', then have it named something simple and something human, like 'Smith', is peak comedy to me.

Wanted to say thanks from Australia for posting these videos. The drawing of the cylinder as a way to put some initial boundaries to the drawing was very helpful for me, as well as a way of using it to visualise the plains and orientation of the monster. much love

I’m getting a real “Svortash” vibe from this tube-like abomination. Also, when Andy died in Peter Jackson’s Kong, I’d have to say that was one of the most uncomfortable scenes I’ve ever experienced in a theater. There were gasps, shrieks, squeals, and squeaks. Meanwhile, I was holding my breath because the worm that ingested his head was vivid and brutal.

I'd encourage you to draw on a piece of masonite so the pages below don't get all pinched. Sometimes the bouncines of the pages below are nice so maybe keep a few sheets underneath for that purpose between the masonite. I'm kinda ocd with my process. It also helps to put a pice of paper under your hand to avoid the dreaded shiny graphite palm.
@thomaschief93835 ай бұрын
You should do one based off the shrike bird, bot necessarily in looks but it in habits, they inpale their prey on thorns and barbed wire to feed and leave these morbid gory scenes of torn open creatures, I feel like if you drew something similarly sadistic it would work so well for your art stye. Amazing video btw thank you so much

Always thought of doing comics of certain books, (cannot reveal my books here, copyright status) but no monsters. For me, they are more than outdated (no offense intended). Monsters here, monsters there, monsters everywhere. The children's book, One Monster After Another and hundreds more. Publisher wants something different. But we draw what our minds create, what our minds think about. It is cool to know other professionals use the same techniques as I. Where did you go to school? Thank you for sharing your style. I Enjoy watching.
