As an arab I must say that I've never been more proud of my language than I was after seeing Karina's interpretation of ya'aburnee. Karina best girl all the way. Also i wanna add that a more litteral translation of ya'aburnee (يقبرني) is "put me in my grave". Even though it's a pretty morbid word, it carries a more cute and lighthearted connotation. And isn't only used for romantic love. The most common way it's used (at least where I live) is parents saying it to their kids, and of course pet owners saying it to their pets. Even though realisitically you don't want to die before your pets. In conclusion: يقبرني to whoever's reading this. Class dismissed ALSO we forgive Willy for his lack of knowlege on Arab countries.

@@fullsuntm It depends on the dialect. The ق letter makes a "q" sound in Modern Standard Arabic (فصحى). In some dialects, such as the Lebanese or Egyptian, the ق is pronouced as a glottal stop (so like this arabic letter: ء). So fun fact, Willy is closer than you might expect with the Lilith thing. She was created alongside Adam and later exiled because she refused to "lay under Adam", but it really means she refused to be subordinate to him, not that she was a fierce cowgirl advocate.
@AdmiralWinfrey Жыл бұрын
I've read versions that say that Lilith was replaced by Eve because Lilith was sterile, which also explains why she targets children specifically. I also read a version that Adam rejected Lilith because God let Adam watch him construct her, and Adam couldn't see her as anything but a horrifying mass of animated muscles and organs. God realized that he had been a little TOO revealing, so he made Eve while Adam slept, cuz sex needs a little mystery.

none of these descriptions of lilith are actually "real", they were made up quite recently. lilith is mentioned a single time in the bible, that being in a short list of creatures of the desert. it is likely that she was originally, in ancient jewish myth, a harpy-esque animal-woman creature as there are many similar such creatures with similar names in bordering cultures such as the akkadian lilu. the story of her being "adam's first wife" was invented in the 19th century by Jewish scholars in an attempt to fix a perceived "error" in the old testament in which the first woman is created twice (once alongside Adam and once later from his rib).

Im a bit late but as a Spanish person i think i have to try to explain the "duende" thing, so in 99% of the cases is the thing that willie said, like a goblin creature, so i was a little confused about that word been here, but in Andalucia (the south of Spain, where i live) there is a thing called "el duende" that would be the other definition applied to music and things like that

I don’t know, I’m a Spaniard myself and I have heard it a lot, specially related to the world of flamenco. Even Cruzcampo has used it in the past for some ad campaigns related to its “identity” in Andalucía. It’s by no means a common word, though, if you never interacted with that subculture.

@emmarobinson6240 Жыл бұрын
I'm a Spanish literature/culture teacher, and from my understanding I've always seen it used in that way related to flamenco/cante jondo/poetry, especially in Southern Spain. "Tiene duende" basically meaning like "it's got soul". You'll hear it a lot in writing from Lorca, for example! But it's definitely a regional thing 😊

To be clear, these words do have an English translation, it just usually requires a phrase or sentence instead of a single word. But often when there is a single word translation with other terms, even some very common ones, there's a lot of nuance lost which can lead to miscommunication. The nuance is often in the form of things like the equivilent word not having the secondary meanings your native word has, or there being major differences in usage or when it is appropriate to say, etc.

For real, what kind of name is Waldo? Wally makes sense because he’s supposed to blend in and be hard to find so of course he would have a common name that doesn’t stand out. Also in Britain Wally means a silly person. So if you said “stop being a Wally.” It means “stop being stupid.”.

"Memo" means "silly" in Spanish 😭. I'm sure it varies from country to country, but at least from where I'm from, the short version for Guillermo is Guille. Also, "having duende" is mostly used in the Andalusian (Southern Spain) culture. Generally a duende is just a little gnome/goblin/fairy creature.
