I began taking metformin when I was 35 I am 80 now and still taking it. I take 2000 mgs daily and have no kidney damage, no low B-12 or any other side effect, except possibly in the last few years, constipation. On the other hand, that could also be just getting old. There is a reason for the old people and prune juice jokes. It's easy to fix with a stool softener or laxative as needed. I am also 5 years older than the next oldest member of my immediate family lived to be. I have no idea if metformin has anything to do with that. I still take it and see no reason to stop............Excellent drug for me that allowed me to eat more of what I like with no problems. I still do pushups and other exercises and try to walk daily, although nowhere as far as is recommended. So far so good. My blood test results are always good...... Something else I do "wrong" and have since "Tab" came out in about 1950 is drink a diet soda or two almost every day. I like them and see no reason not to. I'm a biochemist and the problem I have with Peter Attia is that he loves pharmaceuticals, including statins. Statins has significant side effects, including but not limited to increased risk of type 2 diabetes and Alzheimer's and he's still recommending statins in spite of this. He never mentions Niacin which works just as well with none of the side effects. Some common side effects of Metformin include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach discomfort, and headache disorder. Berberine works just as well with none of the side effects. If I didn't know better, I wonder if he is a consultant to some pharmaceutical company like Scott Gotlieb, former FDA commissioner with revolving door and big paychecks from Pheifer. Attia does not like saturated fats and spews the big Agra propaganda that saturated fat is bad and PUFAs are good this is just incorrect. Check out: Shawn Baker, Paul Saladino, Anthony Chafee. Anyone that pushes pharmaceuticals as opposed to natural alternatives I'm very leery of.

I've always had high cholesterol though I've never been close to being overweight and I (usually) have a decent diet, exercise, etc. A couple years ago I had a blood panel done and the total cholesterol was 280 with a high LDL being the driver. GP told me to start on statins but I said I wanted to try niacin and I pointed out that my triglycerides were very low so I wasn't worried. GP told me that niacin "doesn't work" and he's never had a patient suffer side effects from statins. Hard to believe, but whatever. He seemed not to understand the implications of the triglyceride numbers. I took niacin for 4-5 months before getting a new panel which showed my total cholesterol and LDL each down around 40 points. Mind you, I hadn't made any real changes to my diet, though the niacin does suppress appetite, which was a happy surprise. Despite the results, the GP still insisted that I start on statins. I changed doctors.
@AstwoodF11 ай бұрын
Niacin does work, but it depends on how low you need to lower your LDL. Not defending Peter here, but in his book, he doesn’t really disparage Saturated fat, and he says that the studies are inconclusive on PUFAs and MUFAs. Given the literature out there, his recommendation is to favor MUFAs.

I take metformin and I'm not diabetic nor pre-diabetic. Here's why. Before metformin, my fasting (morning) glucose stayed around 90. After metformin, my fasting glucose is around 84. Alzheimers disease is sometimes called Type 3 Diabetes. I don't want Alzheimers disease. The association between AD and prolonged high blood glucose is very strong. Furthermore, do a little mental exercise: Search "metformin and X" where X is any ailment, disease, or condition you think of. The results are very positive for metformin. Finally, Lactic Acidosis is a rare but well known danger for metformin. However, taking Vitamin B12 usually reduces or eliminates that danger. Obviously, I take B12. It has a fairly long half life in the body so I take it a couple of times a week.

Metformin lowers blood glucose … the price you pay is to grind on your mitochondria- the sugars are lower … but not because you’re healthier … they are lower because of what you’re doing to your mitochondria… Alzheimer’s is called Type 3 Diabetes because of the tax your body pays from the elevated blood sugars and the ensuing grind of your mitochondria. My approach = lower the sugars without the med.

People need a motivator (for me it was learning that you can go blind and get kidney damage) as well as education (learning the various methods that are available so they can choose). If people don't know that it is possible to remit diabetes by changing what they eat then they aren't being given choice. If they are educated and then choose not to change their diet then they have made an informed decision. I remitted my diabetes in less than 3 months just by changing to low carb. When I was diagnosed with diabetes, my GP wanted me on metformin, a statin and also see a dietician (in Australia). I said no to the drugs and that I would try diet first and told her that you only change one thing at a time. At the follow up appointment when I got my blood test results I said to her that I hope from now on she suggested diet before drugs. If I had taken the drug/s and changed my diet I think that the drug/s would have been assumed to have made the difference or contributed to the remittance and I would possibly have ended up on them for life. @ariston5433 first of all, it's important to acknowledge the incredible resilience and dedication you've shown in managing your health conditions. You've been attentive to your body's needs, making adjustments as necessary, and that’s no small feat. It's truly commendable that your recent blood work shows everything is normal and your doctor is satisfied with your weight. This is a testament to your hard work and careful management of your diet and medication. Please don't be too hard on yourself by thinking of yourself as "defective" or "horrible." It's crucial to remember that our bodies' abilities to process foods and supplements are largely dictated by our genetics. Each person's body has its own unique needs and responses, especially when it comes to managing conditions like hypothyroidism and blood pressure. The fact that you require medication doesn't make you less than anyone else-it simply means you're taking the necessary steps to care for your health. You're doing everything right by monitoring your health, staying active, and listening to your body's cues. Keep focusing on your health and well-being, not on an idealized notion of perfection. You are strong, capable, and worthy of self-compassion. Continue to advocate for your health as you've been doing, and take pride in your journey. Interesting. My wife recently went on to metformin at our request. She has MS and I was encouraged by a study from Cambridge Uni in conjunction with researchers from the Uni of Melbourne that found a reversal of damage in rat studies with fasting and metformin. I would have liked to see her take on fasting and I have Dr Boz's book on the Keto diet and her mum. But she's not interested in serious fasting, and I can't change her mind. But the fact that metformin was also shown to give the same benefits was encouraging. It's still early days for her and we will have to wait and see if there's any improvement.

After taking it for several years my blood glucose continued to rise, even with modifications of my eating. Fast forward to today, I weaned myself off Metformin and my blood glucose readings and weight dropped, to the point of being declared non diabetic. Best my doctor could figure is there was something in the Metformin that I was allergic to, causing inflamation, causing my blood glucose to elevate.

The human body is no different.. If its not broken why would anyone try and fix it, or adjust it.. Taking a blood sugar drug when you don't need one?? Stupidity at its highest form. Second, I am type 2 and I took Metformin for years with practically no decrease in my blood sugar. I tested my blood while I was on it and tested it after I stopped taking it and found about a 5% difference (in the drugs favor), that said, with a very small amount of exercise and some corrected dieting and taking a cinnamon pill daily, I reduced my blood sugar by 75% from its high.. Third, on its own label, Metformin says one of its potential long term side effects can be onset of dementia or Alzheimer's.. so why would anyone in their right mind take this drug when they don't need to start with?? Too may YT gurus out there..

I’m not a fan of Attia nor his “theories”. He is a proponent of PKS9 inhibitors if LP(a) is high. I was told my high LP(a) was genetic and diet would not lower it. At this time I was vegan about to go back to vegetarian (am now ketovoire). In 6 months I lowered it by 50 points just by eating saturated fat in cheese and eggs. 6 months after that it was down 100 points - to 46 - through diet alone. I just don’t find him credible at all. And BTW: I fit the criteria for LMHR, which he doesn’t agree with either.

Now, as i wrote, I stopped taking it when I started taking 2gr of Myo-Inositol/D-Chiro-Inositolat each meal and before going to bed. Blood sugar rates are holding steady. Not going down but also not raising. What I'm really curious about, is what its long time effect on LDLs will be. I reduced my Ezetimib/Rosuvstatin-Mepha 10 mg/10 mg by 25% when I started Myo-Inositol/D-Chiro-Inositol. We'll see in the end of June. BTW, I am doing this with knowledge and approval of my GP.

Metformin is known to be mitotoxic. I have a super rare gene mutation that causes monogenic diabetes (MODY4). This is rare on a crazy scale, but the other thing the mutation does is supress my mitochondrial complex I . Misdiagnosed asT1, LADA, T1.5 and finally T2, (thank you gaslighting medical community) I was on metformin for years and years. I was on it when it was still glucophage, before the patent ran out. Unfortunately, it was killing me, too. Already having compromised mitochondria, the metformin was choking down what little I had. When measured I had less than 30 percent of my complex I, with a proliferation of mitochondria...common as they try to compensate. My lactic acid and ammonia weree chronically elevated. When I met with my mito specialist the first time, she told me to drop the metformin immediately. It was still another decade before DNA caught up to get a firm diagnosis, but here we are. The mutation on PDX1 caused the MODY4 diabetes and is proven to cause mitochondrial complex I deficiency. MODY1 and MODY3 are also shown to have connections to mito problems. Metformin just exacerbated it to the point my kidneys were failing with a eGFR below 30. Two weeks after stopping metrormin and beginning the prescribed "mito cocktail", my kidneys were back to the low side of normal. In another two weeks I was fully inside the normal range, where I have remained. No drug is a miracle drug. What works for one can kill another. I would know, as this drug, in my situation, was contributing heavily to an early demise. No thanks, I'm not ready to leave yet.
