I’m an NHS doctor . I’ve been in denial about these very symptoms in me , chronic bone deep exhaustion , poor sleep , disconnection and not able to do any life tasks outside of work. I guess recognition and acceptance is the first step to recovery. Thankyou

@@plasmichoneytrip I was once in that position but I walked away to save my sanity. You will need to change everything. Simplify your life and learn to live with less. Don't try to keep up. Stop and downgrade everything. You would be surprised how your life can change. Tell your family what you plan to do and if they don't understand...save yourself! I live a much happier life now. Luckily for me my husband came to the understanding that I was never going back to that kind of life. Good luck.

@Hope_Faith_Strength Sorry to scare you. My advice is go into a field of nursing which supports your daily life. My work is in the OR and like with any acute setting, it could be busy but normally they are off on weekends except for on-call staff. So check the field of nursing that fulfils you or at least suits your private life and perhaps work at a hospital or an organisation that is not too big.

Honestly thank you for this video. I’ve been caring for a family member since I was 15 and am now 31, it’s kinda the norm to me to just get on with it and to not complain. Over the years I’ve felt exhausted and stressed and felt like I’ve not have any real reason to feel that way, so have just been trying to carry on. I’ve been to many therapists because I just thought I was lazy and useless. Realised I’ve not actually stopped to acknowledge that the work I do is REAL work ( I’m not paid which makes it hard to remember that it’s genuine work. I’ve been shamed by most around me for not “trying hard enough to find work, or that I’m just scared or sabotaging myself” when really the work I already do has not been appreciated or seen for what it is. It’s made me feel like I’m alone and that no one get it or sees the work for what it is. I’ve done uni and graduated whilst caring full time and that was what tipped me over the edge. It’s all become too much. But again I’m not sure how to feel liberated and empowered and seen for all I’ve done. I think a lot of people who are burnt out just want to feel seen and held and appreciated (besides having enough down time) Everything dr describes I feel, I’ve seen many therapists and nothing has ever felt like the right diagnosis. I’m an artist but no longer have the drive or fire to peruse it, I want to stay in bed and nap always as a way to avoid my responsibility. I was also assaulted back in 2010 and now also deal with ptsd and that on top of burn out is tough. Soz for this rant, but this genuinely feels like the only place where I can get this off my chest and feel safe doing it. I’m not sure if I’ll get the validation I need with the carer situation, but this has given me tools to try on my own and am excited to make change, but hope my story can help anyone else out there feeling alone. Sending healing love and peace for anyone feeling this way x

I also discovered that I may be a Highly Sensitive Person. Whole new concept, which may explain why I have been do good in my job of patient support. I totally understand patients newly diagnosed with a rare cancer, and manage to help them. But as I just recognised my burnout, due to other work tasks, I can see I can't keep going. I am empty and been feeling like a failure. And feeling so guilty. I am also constantly criticized and harassed for not completing what is required.

As a retired 72 yr old introvert, widowed last december, I have only a few friends which has left me scratching my head as to where to find new friend. Of the friends I have, one is even more introverted than me! And the other can't say NO to her children and grandchildren, so both are unavailable a lot of the time. Another lives in Vancouver BC. Then I fell down on keeping up with 2 others while dealing with a dying cat over the summer. Needless to say, this program has identified for me that full blown burnout rather than depression sneaked up and fell over me like a soaking wet king size wool blanket in early Sept. Ive recovered a bit and now plan to implement one or two of your suggestions to start. Finding new friends....not sure where us older people go, but maybe in the process of getting back to living more fully will open up a wider world of people. Thanks for a great presentation!

It snuck up on me. I am an avid science and psychology follower but I did not know burnout was different from stress. Stress happens first. I ignored the signs and then totally hit the wall. 4 years of stress symptoms. Don't do it. I got chronic fatigue and depression. It took me a long time to get back to me. I elimated all packaged food and sugar on my own and I know that helped but quitting my nightmare job and getting out in the world made the biggest difference. Burnout sucks but don't let people say you can't recover. Even my doctor and therapist told me I might need to adjust my idea of normal. Thats how bad I was. Loneliness is a thing. Science doesn't lie. Hang in there people. And great video! Thanks for calling out lack of creativity. Looking back I see everything.

For most of my life I thought I was lazy and didn't care about things like cleaning, socialising, and so on. I was diagnosed with burnout in my mid 30s, took the steps and thought I was passed it. 15 years later I hit the wall again, even though I was taking good care of myself, meditating and resting. Still, I had to work through this burn out, but changed my meditations, learnt more and began to move out of it and finally decided to quit my job just as the pandemic hit. It took me 2,5 years of dedicated learning, energy clearing, and meditation to get out of it. Turns out that I never knew what it was like to not be in burn out. Not even when I was a kid. I have traced it back to when I was 4 when a series of events moved me into survival. Of course nobody knew or understood that those events affected me in a traumatic way because adults don't understand how kids don't understand what goes on around them, and when we don't understand something it's always interpreted as potential danger, and survival kicks in. I'm still not where I want to be, where I can feel now that I'm meant to be and can be, but I can now see that it's right there, accessible and I know that I'll be there soon. Frankly, I think almost everyone in our society is in burnout to a degree. Thanks for bringing up these topics that are so important from the medical doctor angel, because it's needed.

Hello! This topic caught my attention. This is so interesting to me. I stepped out of the classroom after 17 years as a 2nd grade teacher. When I left, I was definitely burned out. All I wished for the new school year was to do nothing, have no checklist, and I wanted to not feel responsible for anything or be needed any more. No emails, no parent meetings. No lesson plans, no duties, no spreadsheets, nothing! It’s wildly happening right now! I’m not needed! I don’t have to be responsible and it’s the most liberating! Thanks for this video! 💖

The main cure is money without working for it. You can slow down your run or possibly even jump off your hamster wheel for a moment. Or if you have extra money you can paint your hampered wheel a different color or put it in a different part of the cage to multitask different things.

I never thought I could possibly be heading that way... thank you for making this awareness video, I am happy that I subscribed a few weeks ago and this video showed up in my recommended videos. My parents also got divorced a year or so ago in an awful way and I've been estranged from my dad and taking care of the fall out for my mom. I haven't been okay in like a year and a half. I keep trying to take care of myself where I can but it's just hard. I have a fantastic support system and that's what keeps me going but I know something needs to shift. I understand the desire to have a spouse. I was “lonely and alone” for years. But a spouse doesn’t fix that. I also spent a lot of time alone and lonely in a marriage. A friend of mine had the love of her life die in a car crash. We can’t be defined by others. The connections he talks about aren’t spouses. It can be, but it can also be friends - at church, gym, down the hall, a phone call away. Positive friends (stay away from the chronic complainers or catty ones) and find one thing each day that you enjoy and savour it (that morning coffee, sun on your face, your cat purring) and then look for more of those. They are there, you just have to find them. It’s not easy - I get it. I had to ditch the “I’m not a whole person without someone else” feeling, and life got waaaayyyy easier. Do all his other steps and tell yourself that you are going to take 2023 (or just a week or a month) to work on your “self” and purposely not look for a partner. Give yourself a dating break. Try it please and see what I mean. It did wonders for me.

@@youtubechanel5243lp My mother has been through a lot and after being alone and living independently for almost a decade, she has finally found someone that I can officially say that brings her happiness. She's been through a lot of crappy and toxic guys that I've had first hand experience myself, as I grew up in adolescence watching it unfold, and now as a young adult living together with her, I can also give my two cents in that he's a really cool guy and that I don't have the same fears around him in contrast to her previous relationships. I agree that it's almost virtually impossible to live on your own in this day and age, depending on where you live in the world. I started teaching in 2009 and I now believe, after pandemic lock downs, I've got severe burnout. I quit my full time job and gone casual supply. I just can't shake this deep exhaustion. I've got absolutely no tolerance for any bs that comes my way, I feel I've got no juice left in the tank to deal with it and I'm extremely lonely. I've gone to the doctor asking for help and she did a blood test and only talked about my cholesterol until I pointed out that stress raises cholesterol. I'm trying to quit teaching for good but I'm going thru this alone. But I'm forcing myself to go to the gym and lift weights, play my violin in the Irish group and looking for another job that can help me slow right down and still pay my bills. The lack of creativity is a key point for me as well. All the points raised are what I'm experiencing every day. I've met so many teachers who have had breast cancer or bowel cancer, I don't want to be another fat, white statistic.

We live in a neurotic society in the US. It's advisable to think about sabbath and/or other structures where we shut down businesses and services (excluding essential services, of course) and have downtimes in life that are sanctioned and supported as a culture. I grew up in Germany. I liked those experiences. Parents had a business. They started at 9am. Shut down 2 hours for lunch. Opened again and shut down at 6:30pm. Dad went for a walk and was home, every day, at 7:30pm. Then, we had family dinner. The basics can save us more than we think. We have lost our way. We have sacrificed health, sleep, and family for a little more profit.

This all sounds great and I understand the rationale behind it. Been doing years of therapy, MBCT, took time off, switched employers. Bottom line is that all the roles are similar. If I take an hour after work to work out, it just means I'm another 100 e-mails behind when I get back. Cost of living keeps increasing, jobs are tricky here right now, so don't really have a choice but to keep going. I have the chest pains, severe insomnia, pure exhaustion, difficulty even brushing my teeth, poor eating. I know it's not healthy, but need to keep paying the bills.

Hi Barbara, I hear you, I feel you. I hear that you cannot see that you have any choice. Please just try something really small, like taking 30 seconds a couple of times a day to just focus on your breathing? It can feel like just one more thing that you've got to do on top of the heavy load you already carry, but it could actually pay dividends by buying you a bit more sleep or more focus to prioritise those emails. There has to be a way to insert a little kindness and compassion towards yourself into your life....

First, I’d like to say that I always enjoy Dr. Rangan podcasts. I feel strongly that on the first point mentioned in this video that it is important to consider whether you are an introvert or an extrovert. This makes a tremendous difference in treating burn out. A great book on this is ‘Quiet’ by Susan Cain. I personally am a social introvert. I get recharged by getting time alone in solitude. Solitude is actually one of my favorite environments; it brings me to life and I really don’t get lonely…perhaps it’s possible.. I have many friends, just loneliness isn’t something I experience so much. As much as I feel, the advice, on the first point would be great advice for an extrovert, I do not believe that this would help an introvert like myself. Introverts, love and care about their family friends, they care about their tribe just as much as anyone else, however their personal needs demand quiet time alone and they do not often find themselves lonely when they get this time. In a society driven by extroversion, it has stressed introverts and been the cause of burn out and exhaustion in our lives. If you find yourself craving solitude for a breath of fresh air, go for a walk in nature, go swimming, jogging, and most definitely consider reading ‘Quiet’ by Susan Cain. It’s on Amazon audible as well as paperback. If you’ve been stressed by too much community or are over burdened by social obligations…especially this time of year. Treat yourself to this book and the empowering knowledge you will get from it. It’s personally my remedy for burn out.

I'm an introvert. INFJ is you're a myers briggs fan. I love that book. I love spending time by myself. I get overwhelmed frequently. But I got the most serious form of burnout partly because I isolated myself. Extroverts don't need to recharge after engaging socially. We do. That is the difference. BUT we are still social creatures and MOST of us will get sick and suffer if we don't engage with other humans. I think that Susan Cain would agree. She encourages introverts to find their way in an extroverted world. She wants us to engage. Burnout can kill. Too much isolation is deadly. I know.

Thank you for sharing. I’m glad to hear that you got to recharge Anna that you’re a fellow introvert 😊. I totally agree with you on that one of our biggest differences with extroverts is how we recharge. Everyone is so different on the level of social interaction that is healthy for them. I feel we are all social creatures, but also so many different levels. For example, some scientists are so fascinated by their craft, they submerge themselves into it to the point of isolation and are just fine with that; for some it’s the lifestyle they prefer. For some, isolation is fine for a month, two months, a week, a day, some people a couple hours. We’re just all so different. Whatever our threshold is, it’s unique to us each and the danger of lack of or even over socialization would be unique to each of us as well. I agree that Susan Cain would say we are social creatures, but I think she would also agree that ‘how social’ is variable.🌿

Dr. Chatterjee, you just may have saved my sanity. Your presentation touched on every single aspect of my character/personality and diagnosed point by point my soul's downward spiral. I cannot thank you enough. The pressures we place on ourselves can be devastating. I had to retire from a profession I used to enjoy, one in which I demanded perfection from myself. I was raised in a competitive family (one parent an alcoholic, another a workaholic) and environment where one required self-excellence and to walk away...the "winner." I beat myself up in the process, nay, burnt myself out. I allowed "paralysis by analysis" to _slow_ me down (or beat me up!), day after agonizing day. Be well.

I needed this today , I'm currently in bed recovering from several infections that's left my body shot ! ..but everything you have spoke about 100% relates to me , I've felt so emotional , not coping , but fundamentally I haven't seen anyone for a while, my adult children left and I didn't know what my role was anymore , and I didn't nurture friendships, so I don't have any , I've been so stressed I've just wanted it to end ..but there is a part of me that's searching for change .

Heather i Hope you listen take notes and act. To help yourself get out of this hole . Because you matter you really do. Even though you say ur job of rearing ur children is finished, You've still more to give, and to gain. In this new stage of your / our life. I do know what you mean, I am in the very same situation as yourself. Dr Chatterley is giving us a lot of great advice. Let's take it, why not write it out, once you see it on paper, you will see how you will start with 1 or 2 . All in your own time, decide them a day. And let's get out of the hole we've made for our selves . Gently and slowly. Let's work through Dr C list. I wish you the very best. And I pray you make the change. For you. As I will for me. Heather please say every day to self I am worth it. Because you are. And I am. 😊 🎉 🎉 😊

This describes what I am going through precisely and have been for years. I’ve been a caregiver for my 90 year old mom for 20+ years in different capacities. Working full time and tending to her 6 days a week has left me totally mentally and physically drained. I find myself apologizing and feeling guilty about not saving time for my friends and my husband but the thought of adding something to my calendar stresses me more.I will work on forcing myself to schedule more get-togethers and implement some of these suggestions. Thank you!,

Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of difficult things on my to do list, but i feel fine. So, i guess, you can overcome it! I realized I was burnt out about 10 months ago and since then I did basically nothing except taking care of things I let slide before, and lived on my savings, mostly stayed home, for a whole year, and I guess it helped.

Straight out of high school I started working with my Dad at the Dry Cleaner he owned. At first all I did was assemble orders and worked on the counter (taking orders in and giving them out). At that time we had a bunch of people working with me. I remember at the time thinking that working 5+ hours was too much for me. 😂 As time went on we had people leave and come but overall I took on most of what we had to do, most of what I called running the front (this includes assembling orders, working on the counter, and tagging the orders so we knew who’s they were). Eventually as I learned more I started helping in the back of the store (this is where all the pressing and cleaning would actually happen). With this I would be basically doing most of the things in the store not counting the pressing of everything. So there would be some days if Dad had to leave on deliveries I would have to run both the front and the back, and make sure the orders Dad needed were done and bagged. This stayed this way for a bit until the pandemic hit. At this time I was the only person running the front. When it first came out pressers stayed and continued doing what they did but eventually for one reason or another they quit. So. I had to do that. Now Dad took on running the front, and this let me do a bunch of the pressing and I hadn’t yet had to take on all of it. We still on person helping. This stayed true until about 2021. We lost our last presser. If I remember correctly they went to jail. 😅 This is the point where I think my burnout started. I remember very clearly at this time that even though I was pressing all the shirts. I could still come home and work out for an hour (I was and still am overweight at the time of writing this so I wanted to lose a bunch of weight!). Once I took on pressing everything. I just couldn’t anymore. I could do maybe 30 minutes at most. And not even what I used to. Fast forward to 2022. Over the past 2 years we got kicked out of our first store( that landlord was a piece of work), started pressing all of our stuff at one place, then had to move to another location, the FINALLY getting our location were I am typing this at now (Lunch time! I’m eating enchiladas!). Now because we have two locations one that cleans and presses, and another that takes the orders in I am here by myself. This is what I do know (I own the business now btw). I wash all the clothes, press all the clothes, run my store because it has a front also, and I do all the admin stuff, ie. bookkeeping, paying bills, etc. At this point I don’t think I have ever felt more tired than I do now.. we just got of a short break because of the Holidays. But all the resting I did just doesn’t help. I am sad, angry, frustrated, most of the time. I don’t want to sleep when I get home I just want to have free time. I work 7 to 8 most days. So by the time I get home and have dinner done it’s 9 pm and I barely have any energy to do anything. Now I will still play games or stay up late talking to friends but that cuts into my sleep. These things have been compounding for years at this point. Next year will mark 8 years that I have done this. I will be making it my goal that this time next year I will have sold my business. I came to this conclusion about this time last year (January 2023). I have spent most of last year (2023) working out a plan. The plan will be set in motion this month (January 2024) and I hope to remember and update this post next year. If you read this far thanks! Really appreciate listening to my rambling!!

Dr I hope you read this question. My wife and I have a restaurant. We go in at 5am every day. It’s a 10 minute drive. So I wake her up at 4:30 and it’s plenty of time for her. But I wake up at 2:45-3am. I have a routine where I prepare my Yerba mate tea. I prepare my sons lunch box. I take care if many chores like washing any dishes left over. I get in 2 loads of clothes in the washer because at that time the electricity is cheaper (I live in Uruguay). Obviously those clothes need to be dried and folded as well. And in the middle of that I stretch and do some basic calisthenics to get the blood flowing. In fact, that hour and half seems like a 15 minute breeze. Let’s I get yo bed at 9-9:30 so by sacrificing that 1.5 hours I average around 5 hours of sleep. The sacrifice comes in the form of productivity not sitting watching tv. What do you think about that in terms of my sleep habit? By the way I’m 38 and we work 70 hours a week and I run between 60-70 km a week but I manage to be a machine all week long.

Yeah, I went through burnout while taking care of my mom for eight years. She had mental and brain health problems. I wish that everything had gone better and that she were still alive.
