ive never done any construction stuff but want to build a pergola for my patio, this helps a lot
@bobbienovak557311 ай бұрын
I've built multiple pergolas but dropped concrete anchoring ground. I'm about to build a front porch enclosure to block out the brutal beating of Southern exposure here in Phx. I have 2 spots where concrete is already and am going to have to pour concrete for the other post bases. I think it's almost less work to do this than sink posts. And it creates no contact, which I like
@kenb61442 жыл бұрын
Word of caution on using impacts. I've seen less experienced guys wail on those wedge anchors for several seconds, causing the concrete to crack. Especially on recently poured concrete. Great short video; you covered the topic well.

Yep… pull they’ll pull the anchor right on out…. Less experienced should stick to a socket,,,

Great video, love your content been watching them all. How do you properly line up 3-4 piers with those brackets if your doing footers right next to house for a ground level deck? I dont have enough vertical space for a post. How much do you recommend those round pier blocks you've talked about in other videos? Is that the "easy" way or do you think theyll hold up for 20-30 years? THanks again brother you are a great teacher.

I use those post stand offs all the time, when redoing front porch posts here in the south. Moisture destroys the posts quickly. Thanks for the video as always, very informative.
@apilkey Жыл бұрын
@bigtime37ja can you use these clips for fence posts? I was going to pour concrete 42” Deep and 12” in Diameter using Bigfoot Systems® Footing Form BF28 that has a 28” Diameter Bell end. Once the Concrete sets I was thinking of mounting these brackets to accept my fence posts. Or are these only good for decks?

Bring your sawzall to the site as well, be prepared to have at least one anchor not go down far enough and have to cut the top of the bolt off to get the post to sit flat.

In Australia, if you were doing that outside and worried about dust extraction, you'd be the butt of everyone's jokes. But maybe we're just careless and heading to an early grave?
@leestebbins50515 ай бұрын
How do you evacuate the dust before setting the anchor? Straw?
@AustinAkin2 ай бұрын
The dust extraction isn’t necessarily for safety reasons, you have to get all dust and debris out of the hole or it won’t work properly as he stated in the video especially if your using epoxy in the hole before putting in the anchor
@nuggets.67742 ай бұрын
@@AustinAkin I agree. It's important to clean out your hole. He did, however, talk about HEPA filters earlier, which suggests the 'hot topic' relates to the possible health implications from ingesting dust. It's just getting to the stage where it's almost impossible to do simple jobs these days. Australia's a nanny state. Our most recognisable sport, Aussie Rules, is being ruined by overly officious wankers trying to make it as safe as possible. It's supposed to be a contact sport! Rant over!

I believe that the the Simpson standoff says to use a 1/2 anchor, not necessarily a 1/2 inch wedge anchor. One-half inch J bolts, 1/2" wedge anchors, and 1/2" threaded rod with the right adhesive are all OK, correct?
@2searingfilms3 ай бұрын
What did you use for the shim? Or did you use a manufactured beam? How did you get the beam to fit to the bracket when the true measurement of each beam is 1.5” wide making two 2x equal to 3”. I can’t find such brackets that perfectly fit my two 2x12 that attaches to concrete because all brackets equal 4” wide and not 3”. Seems like these brackets were made for 4 x 4, 4 x 6 or 6 x 6 post footings and for engineered beams, not 2x. Thanks for any feedback

Is there any reason I couldn't do this on a large concrete patio pad? The deck wouldn't be tied to the house so it would be free to move with the pad without damaging the house (i.e. frost heave).

Was that drill going counterclockwise? What kind of bit did you use for the concrete?
@andyprairiedog4829 Жыл бұрын
Video effects on the camera/frame speed makes it look like rotating objects are going the opposite direction...impact wrenches, helicopter rotors (still or seems slower) etc. The bit he is using is a 1/2" rotary hammer drill bit for concrete. I started out with a 20volt hammer drill but those rotary hammers and their concrete bits are on another level.

It’s really just sheet metal so there will be some flex which in many cases is preferable to avoid things snapping. However once the weight of the deck is on it it’ll be minimal.

What do you do if your post is bigger than that bracket. My posts are 8". If you tighten the bolt before you install the post you cant use the slot to level the post.
@KenDebono Жыл бұрын
Buy a standoff having the right dimensions. They sell standoffs for 4x4, 6x6, and 8x8. Install all the standoffs, then with a chalk line or string, ensure they are in a straight line. As he stated, loosed nuts to move any standoff out of alignment of the other ones. The slot is not meant for allowing you to plumb the post - to do that use shim(s).
