To the young folks: I'm 59. I have deep "elevens" that came from squinting -- it's from not wearing sunglasses and not doing a good job of keeping up with my eye prescriptions (I'm nearsighted). Your eye care also affects your skin. Take care of your eyes!

Dental health also helps us look young. My parents lost teeth as they aged and didn’t get them replaced. It makes your jaw shrink. There was a lot of air pollution as well. Everyone had a coal fire and the air would be brown!

I high jumped as a teenager and in college and I am from a Caribbean island. I recently found out that a couple of aunts, an uncle and a cousin had to have a surgical procedure to remove a growth from their eyes caused by over exposure to sun. Due to the fact that I have worn sun glasses because of track I basically never have gone without for over 30 years so I do not have the lines between the eyes nor have I had any issues with my eyes. An added perk is looking cool while wearing them!

I don't think it's that mental illness mellows out with age, exactly; rather, the sufferers we see who are past a certain age have obviously survived, while others have succumbed earlier in some way. Every day that a sufferer of an illness survives can feel like a kind of, if not "triumph," then at least a fact that bodes well for the day/s further. It's like resigning oneself to the sense that, "Well, i got through today, and through the day before that; so maybe, just maybe, I'll get through tomorrow, even if thru inertia." And before you know it, a week or a month or a year has passed. Now, there *is* something to be said with all the hormonal changes and brain development from adolescence even into the mid 20s, and I do remember the intensity of my own mental difficulties during that age period could feel particularly hard to handle. But I don't think my condition's mellowed out so much as I've learned from experience how best to manage it, I know better where/how to get help and who to trust, i can see loved ones around me more clearly and really understand the consequences to others if i don't manage my illness, and like I said above, there's a little awareness in the back of my mind that anyway I've gotten this far already.

I think a large part of it is people’s perception of human life has changed. You’re not “old and used up” by a certain age anymore. This leads to people actually putting effort into their appearance and fitness well into their later years.

Re mental health and age: I volunteer in community services and younger clients on the whole are usually far more lucid than older clients (and by older I mean in the 30s to 60s age range not necessarily elderly), despite having many of the same mental health and substance abuse issues. So take from that what you will. I do think traumas tend to compound with age: divorces, loss of parents, loss of friends, even mental health episodes in themselves are a kind of trauma. For some people these compounded traumas affect them in perhaps irreversible ways.
@kimmisc01
@kimmisc01 3 жыл бұрын
Mental health is more intense in young people because of big dreams, high expectations of finding blissful happiness, and the fact that they're more passionate about everything. It hurts when reality settles in and you realize everything in life is hard. It calms down with age because every year of life is another year of exposure therapy. You grow numb to the little things, and the presbyopia blurs your imperfections so much that your mirror is like a snapchat filter. Mental health gets pretty bad with chronic illness though, especially painful ones... the depression gets really bad while in debilitating pain for years.

I love that line of stickers....they're cute. Another reason we aren't aging as much (skin-wise) is we're no longer an agricultural nation. The majority of the country farmed, and spent beacoup hours out in the sun/weather with no sun screen. Now most people don't spend that kind of time outside.

I'm with you about being cold. I hate winter and feeling like I'm curled in a ball all the time. I also can't sleep in a cool bedroom, it's impossible for me to get comfortable. Give me summer warmth any day! :D I remember seeing pictures during the 50's of Hollywood stars between takes on a movie set where they were all smoking cigarettes. It was rare to find a star from that era that actually took good care of themselves, Esther Williams comes to mind as one of the few.

Ate a high protein, low carb diet. Her downfall was prescription drugs she was give for her very severe anxiety which she suffered more and more seriously from as her career progressed, and pain from what seems likely to be endometriosis.

The reason restaurants are kept cold is for the workers. The wait staff are running around working up a sweat, and the kitchens are brutal. Air conditioning is expensive to run....a restaurant would keep it warmer if it wasn't for concern the staff would faint.

I can attest to mental illness mellowing out over the decades. I'm doing so much better these days for whatever reason. What I personally put it down to is having to research diet and making sure my body gets every nutrient. Since taking control of that, my symptoms have reduced to a level where I'm able to function and even create art again. My 20s and early 30s were a living HELL that I barely survived. I just hope I never regress again.

I agree that the intensity of symptoms for someone with MH Disorder may decrease in time but have seen older adults experiencing episodes at times that would counter that idea. I worked with adults of all ages and even our psychiatrists noted that illness intensity lessens as they age. IMO I think their brain just slows down with that energy maybe younger folks have naturally.

Dr. Dray, I was watching an old video that you did on urea. It was great. However, I’m still confused about if used in higher concentrations how it differs from an AHA. For example, how does a 12% urea cream differ from 12% lactic or 12% glycolic acid lotion? Would you consider doing a video that contrast urea with AHA and BHA and/or how they can support each other? Thanks.

So if anyone likes a bit of chemistry, the hydration and exfoliation aspect has to do with the hydrogens involved. Hydrogen bonding occurs when things are hydrated, keeps things looking plump and juicy (physical), whereas exfoliation is when a proton is donated by the acid which is a chemical reaction. I think polyhydroxy acids work like this too

Restaurants were not too kind when you asked for the non-smoking area, that area was reserved and clean and when you sat in the smoking area, patrons heard me ask and then they all decided to light up. I wasn't bold enough then to say you know what, never mind we can eat someplace else. I love the heat and dread fall/winter. I don’t care if it is 100 out- just as long as it is not below 70☀️ I have such bad nerve pain in the cold and hate overly air conditioned stores and winter because it sends my pain levels through the roof. My husband and I are considering a move to Florida or Texas from the northeast because we love heat.

mental health amelioration: its probably a correlation between the coping skills and experience gained with aging rather than anything physiological to do with the brain. i personally have seen people's mental health deterioration over the 40s and 50s so.... its really about how much you can do as early on as you can to help yourself cope if you do have a physiological issue. it could ultimately go either way.

Schizophrenia is an intriguing subject for me directly. I am a fragile x carrier and unclear where it stemmed from. Now, I’ve heard my great grandfather was “crazy” and likely afflicted by schizophrenia. Interestingly he was an orphan during the depression and once married had approximately 12 daughters and 2 sons. Only one son survived. He was also a farmer raising tobacco, cotton, and sugar. So you tell me: crazy with schizophrenia or crazy because of situation. Perhaps both are true.

I need my glasses mainly for driving at night but a few years ago my insurance was having a deal on prescription sunglasses, so I got a pair. LOVE! I will never be without them again. I also have worked in a hospital for 40 years. I remember when smoking was allowed there! We would have patients in for COPD, have a smoke and then cry for a nebulizer treatment. Crazy.

A couple of years ago you did a video on caring for mature skin. Any chance you could do an update? There are so many products I get confused. I just use Aveeno for my body and Cetaphil as a facial cleanser. For facial moisturiser I use CeraVe and I am yet to find a tinted sunscreen or indeed any sunscreen I can use around my eyes. I am in Australia.

When I was in high school we had a smoking lounge in our school and you could smoke in the hallways. You could smoke in the theatre, on the plane and the hospital - there was a designated area on each floor for smoking.

I too remember smoking sections in movie theaters, with ashtrays built into the armrests. I smoked from age 16-26 and smoked on a plane and in a hospital room - and I was the patient!

@@LMDinNC Yes, when I was a patient in the hospital as well and I was able to smoke down the hall in the smoking lounge (they called it). I was just talking with my husband, and yes it was a smoking section in the theatre (like it really mattered - we were all in the same room). I quite smoking July 1, 2000 and my husband quit September 1, 2001 - we both quit cold turkey - we both were smoking in junior high (I think we were 13 or 14). Just thinking about it makes me cringe ~ I thought I was so cool in junior high.

I'm a mental health therapist, and have worked in several community mental health and substance use settings, and I can't speak to the severity necessarily, but I would say the majority of clients are usually under 50, so there could be something to that.

I live in SoCal and the same thing happens here with AC. My husband and I always carry a wrap to put on when going into a restaurant or store. If I get seated under an AC vent by the time we leave I feel as though I’ve caught a cold - my nose is running, I’m shivering, and I have goosebumps on my arms. This is dating myself, when I was in college, professors and students could smoke during class - talk about second hand smoke! In grad school the class sizes were small and the lecture rooms were too, by the end of the hour/two hour class, my eyes, nose, and throat were stinging. If I get lung cancer it will be from that exposure. Eric Clapton did the Cocaine song.

Personality disorders do tend to get less with age but schizophrenia does not get less and in fact gets worse as does actual bipolar disorder (most of the people who say they are bipolar are actually borderline for insurance billing purposes). One of these days I’ll make may own KZbin channel.

People always ask me why i don’t have many eye wrinkles at 51. I have been wearing sunscreen on my face since my 20’s, but I wonder if it’s because I ALWAYS wear sunglasses. I have to wear glasses to see well, so I almost never go out without my sunnies. I live in Los Angeles where theres bright glare & sunny days year round. However I did smoke occasionally in my 20’s, so the skin around my mouth didn’t hold up as well.

I have always worn sunglasses religiously due to sensitivity to light and I have had crows feet since i was 19. So, theory debunked in my case. Genetics and having an overly expressive face is what I blame it on. And no botox. 😬

@@HeatherFonseca How would wearing sunglasses not help prevent crowsfeet? I'm sure it helped you! I mean, you're stopping the sun almost completely so no sun damage can actually occur. Lines are predominately caused by photoaging. I have photosensitivity and have always worn them, since a young adult and seems like the only person doing so on overcast days. At 52, I am just starting to see some lines when I smile. I'm not claiming to look 25 years younger or whatever, but my eye area looks great still

On your comment about mental illnesses peaking in your 20s and 30s, I think it depends on the mental illnesses themselves and availability of resources like treatments. Symptoms of certain mental illnesses like schizophrenia do not necessarily "peak" in the 20s and 30s, but the average onset begins late adolescence or early adulthood, and usually somewhat earlier in men than in women. Although I can see why one may view the symptoms "appearing" to be the worst during that period, due to the age of the initial onset itself and the individual not yet experienced in terms of management. Typically, with access to psycho-education and various treatment options, symptoms may appear better with time. However, the credit lies to the management of the symptoms and not necessarily the brain "mellowing out" - just talking about schizophrenia in this case. Again, it'll vary depending on the specific mental disorder. btw, I love your content!

I love the skin aqua sunscreen too. I have prescription sunglasses, but they weren't expensive. The site I get them from is called $39 glasses, but I think it is a little more for the sunglasses. My regular glasses also darken outside, but it isn't enough in our summer sun. It was worth it to invest in an extra pair of actual sunglasses. My eye doctor is adamant about wearing a hat and sunglasses. I hate hats, but I am determined to start wearing one this year. I just bought a fedora with sun protection. I am hoping it will look good and be an incentive to cover my head more.

People with mental illnesses may appear to mellow out in their 40s and beyond because the people around them have learned how to adapt to their behaviors and help them better navigate a world that isn't necessarily set up to understand them.

And you'll be glad that I finally found a shampoo with amodimethicone, since most shampoos that are imported here contains high levels of dimethicone. I found a local brand that contains only amodimethicone. Love from Bangladesh🇧🇩.
