I can’t stress enough how lovely and refreshing it is to see a normal looking person without plastic surgery and a crap ton of botox and filler , sit in a normal looking apartment , live a relatable, non Beverly Hills nouveau riche life and give us information about skincare without talking down to us or trying to sell us a bunch of stuff or procedures. It seems like a lot of skincare docs or “ skincare professionals” on KZbin are trending towards content creators who are kind of addicted to their own procedures or something and don’t give us a realistic example of a healthy routine . Like… I’m 41 and it’s ok to make peace with my small crows feet . Yes! I'm glad you finally addressed the misconception that people of color should only use mineral sunscreen. That's a freaking curse! What makes it worse is the fact that this misconception comes from someone who calls themselves a "doctor". People with medium and dark skin can't wear a mineral sunscreen without looking like a zombie. As a medium-skinned person, i will NEVER buy any mineral sunscreens ever again. They're more expensive, non-elegant and very drying. It just feels out of touch with reality to tell people that chemical sunscreens are dangerous, yet they recommend expensive mineral sunscreens that come in a tiny bottle and rave about how good they are while also underapplying them and forgetting the fact that mineral sunscreens look different on different skin tones. Mind you, i'm not even a dark-skinned person, and i have never found a mineral sunscreen that looks completely invisible. Chemical sunscreens for the win!

As a poc I heard that we should use mineral sunscreens as it was the fact that chemical sunscreen produced heat and that makes hyperpigmentation worse. I have since learned this is untrue (basically) but I spent SOOOOO much time and money looking for mineral sunscreens and none of them worked for me. Not only did they leave an awful grey/lavender cast but for my skin it was actually more irritating as for me I found them really drying. I have found 3 or 4 chemical sunscreens that really work for me and the hyperpigmentation I had has improved significantly with daily reapplied application. Whatever you like and are happy to reapply will be what works for you. Doesn’t matter what brand or if it’s chemical or mineral - consistency is key and for that you need to be happy with how it looks and feels.

I hear a lot of that, “treat your facial skin like it might fall off if you touch it,” from Korean KZbin channels. I think it’s a cultural thing there, and therefore it’s something that won’t go away. In Japan, they are obsessed with foam in cleansers and the ideal foam is one that is so high that your hands don’t even touch your face. Only foam does. You’re using your hands to move the foam around your face. What frustrates me most is on skincare subreddits where I see people say, “I’m using 0.1% tretinoin every night and my face is burning and peeling and bright red! How long will this last?” And I just feel like…geez you want fast results but you’re literally going backwards. You’re damaging your skin because you think you NEED to apply as high a concentration, as often as possible. Or people in r/AsianBeauty who fully insist on ONLY using K-Beauty products. They say that their skin is inflamed, etc., and they list 42 products they use every day. And when you suggest minimizing their routine to a simple cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen for a few weeks to let it heal and calm down before adding back one product at a time, they completely ignore that and instead go on a quest to figure what ingredient they are allergic to. They then carry around a list of 20 ingredients they’re supposedly allergic to when the reality may be that they’re allergic to, like, 4 things and they’re just overwhelming their skin. Skincare is supposed to a fun, relaxing way to do a bit of self care. It’s not about trying to reach some stupid, unimportant, and unrealistic beauty standard. It’s not absolutely necessary to have every ingredient known to man in your skincare routine every day.

I found a great mineral sunscreen that works for me. I'm about the same complexion as Gabrielle Union and it doesn't leave a cast. Olay Regenerist mineral sunscreen SPF 30. After about 5 or 10 minutes, it settles and looks great. The only thing is that it is not water resistant

It wasn't until I found you Dr. Dray that I was able to stop spending SO much money on products that weren't working and start with great basics you gave me to help take care of my skin! Thank you🙌 Also, previous people I was watching (which I no longer do) were making me obsessed with "This week I found an even better product, etc...". After I had already spent $40.+ dollars to trust what they said in hopes that this would be even better. I got suckered into the media and influences making me run around chasing which I had no idea after a while what I was chasing anymore. Finally after finding your channel, things seems to fall into place. I got my skin on track with affordable products and am happy with my routine. Thank you soooo much for all you have done. You're education and pointing us in the right directions has helped millions and I am so glad I have been following you for years and will continue too!!!! Huge Thanks! ♥

Thank you so much for the comments about sunscreen during pregnancy. I MUCH prefer chemical to physical sunscreens, but there was so much against using chemical sunscreens (most specifically oxybenzone), that I have been exclusively using mineral sunscreen. I don’t have to worry about white cast as I am ghostly, but I just feel like chemical sunscreens sit and work better on my skin. Also, most of the sunscreens I use are Korean or European, so they don’t have oxybenzone in them anyway.

Oh Dr. Dray, what a great video! I think that watching your channel needs to be a mandatory requirement for people who really want to know the truth about skincare, seriously! I knew nothing before I started watching your channel years ago. What I knew was confusing and basically nonsensical . My 59 year old skin loves you and thanks you, as do I and sooo many others!! You're so right about "sunscreening" as general rule. My mother (86) has been distracted a cancerous formation on her nose skin a month ago. She was a nurse by the way. While checking her, the surgeon several times looked at me and said "you know that you have to wear sunscreen everyday, don't you". I do-since the 90s, being blond and blue eyed in a relatively sunny climate. Girls, it's crucial.

Dr. Dray, I hope you would come up with an app that is Dr Dray approved skin care. People would just scan the product then it would show if it is approved or not. Also, an indication in the video itself if it is approved or not would be truly helpful. Thank you.

I finally went back to a dermatologist. I had a whole body cancer check. I work outdoors and I have for >15 years. I took Dr. Dray's advice about UVP clothing, hats, sunscreen, etc, and I had 0 suspect spots! :) The schedule they put me on for the morning: Wash with Cerave foaming facial cleanser, Moisturize with Cerave PM, (then 2 prescriptions for bacteria and fungi--determined after looking under a scope), and finally, a sunscreen (she said to keep using Paula's Choice SPF 50). Night is wash, moisturize, Tretinoin, and moisturize again. For my body, she was thrilled that I have been using Panoxyl (on Dr. Dray's advice). I'm waiting on blood work to see what oral medications I should take. That's it. No toners, serums, eye creams, expensive BS, etc. I understand Tretinoin can be expensive for some, but my insurance covers it because I have such bad acne. Thank you for giving such good advice for free.

Dr. Dray, I’m an Aesthetician and I LOVE your videos and agree with the majority of info. The part about social media creating so much confusion is spot on. When I get my clients on certain products, my approach is always “let’s keep it simple, enjoyable, and consistent” But I am constantly seeing clients product jumping all over the place because they saw something on Instagram. Then they’re skin takes a turn for the worse as it’s usually not something appropriate for their skin or they don’t have any idea at all what’s in it. This has been my career for 20 years and it’s never been harder than it is now to get clients to manage their expectations due to false info online. Crazy times. Thank you for all you do!! In my next life, I want to be a Derm like you❤

I thought if anything retinoids would prevent the Hayflick Limit because of their affect on stem cell differentiation? But as someone who loves getting regular TCA peels done (4 times a year) could that have long term negative affects? Is incorporating LED therapy good since it stimulates ATP?? Thank you for this video! You are one of my top 3 Go-To’s for skin care advice because you actually teach and I love your skill level coupled with common sense. I admit to being older than most of your audience (I’m 69) so I’ve always gone to the sensible side of skin care such as it not mattering which direction skin care is applied to the face and it not mattering which finger(s) are used to apply as long as one is not tugging like they’re rubbing out a stain lol. I also love how you speak about easily and cheaply obtained products as well as some high end. Thank you, again, for your content! I love it and we all learn so much! Not to mention you turned me back onto tea drinking and tea brands lol❤️

THANK YOU! As an Asian dealing with hyperpigmentation, for the past year I felt enormous pressure to wear mineral sunscreens… I have wasted a LOT of money testing different mineral sunscreens… Damn. There are very few that truly feel comfortable on the skin after reapplication. So many of them build up and are really drying. I experienced so much irritation through that alone over the past year, let alone the reticence I also felt with the weird casts they leave. Recently, I switched to more comfortable chemical sunscreens again, which are far easier to reapply and my skin deals better with them. Thank you Dr. I no longer feel bad about it.🙏🏼🌹💝🌟🏆

My experience with "luxury" skin care products is their cachet relies on fancy packaging, pretentious names and fragrance. Fragrance is my enemy and fancy skin care and hair care products are mostly a disaster for me! I now ignore "scientific" studies not peer reviewed by those with the education and training to make an informed recommendation. I've learned to discount anecdotal positive reviews as just more advertising. The net is full of influencers who feed our fears and desires. Love a good myth busting video! 🤩 The ones about what direction to rub in your skincare products and only use the ring finger around the eyes have been flying around for decades. Another one is that moisturizers should only be patted into the skin, never rubbed. I guess if your skin was the texture of crepe paper this may be helpful. Lol! 😛
