Another terrible myth is when people claim that organic skin care products are better. A lot of organic skin care products are filled with essential oils and other fragrances. I have found that fragrance free is better especially when you are on Tretinoin.

Agreed. I used to be so hung up on “clean beauty” which I still enjoy certain products that actually work or contain helpful ingredients. I’ve learned less is more, and prefer to forgo most “natural”fragrances. Marketing is so powerful and I’m glad I got out of the fog. “clean” to me means non harmful, non irritating and beneficial.

Another misconception is that expensive skincare is better. I was burning a hole in my wallet buying all the hyped up expensive skincare products that wouldn’t do much for my skin. I recently went back to basics with Cerave and Aveeno oat cream (per your recommendations), and my skin is at its best.

Definitely! Love it! My sister suffers from this problem, spending $500/mo on cosmetic products from Korea with rare or weird ingredients. She's convinced that it's the reason of her youth, but I'm 10 years older & look young too, but without bizarre products. Plus, she could spend those $500 better, for example get in shape or move to a better city/country.

Yup! I see people spending loads of money on expensive stuff that isn’t even good, and is sometimes terrible. Plus they don’t use the important products, like sunscreen! I have pared down my skincare to inexpensive but good products like CeraVe and Vanicream, and use the savings to splurge on two things: prescription retinoids and sunscreen with a formula I actually enjoy using.

I work in ID right now but I worked for a derm for years before that ( I’ve actually converted several co workers to a more reasonable skin routine with this channel) and I’m still addicted to skincare content on KZbin . I can’t stress enough how lovely and refreshing it is to see a normal looking person without plastic surgery and a crap ton of botox and filler , sit in a normal looking apartment , live a relatable, non Beverly Hills nouveau riche life and give us information about skincare without talking down to us or trying to sell us a bunch of stuff or procedures. It seems like a lot of skincare docs or “ skincare professionals” on KZbin are trending towards content creators who are kind of addicted to their own procedures or something and don’t give us a realistic example of a healthy routine . Like… I’m 41 and it’s ok to make peace with my small crows feet . I wear sunscreen as use a retinoid and anything that shows up on my skin despite these things is ok and Normal and doesn’t need to be immediately corrected…you know ?

I’m so glad you discussed retinoids and the Hayflick Limit. There is one skincare company in particular that perpetuates this myth and so do many of the estheticians that sell their products. I did the research early on and found exactly what you suggest-that Hayflick doesn’t affect the skin’s stem cells. I think some of the more offensive fear-mongering consists of seemingly erudite-sounding discussions of matters most people haven’t heard of like Hayflick and creating marketing around it. It’s extra work but I really suggest when people hear these “theories” they do some research and look for peer-reviewed work on the subject. Great video-thank you for your work and Happy New Year! ♥️

Yes! I'm glad you finally addressed the misconception that people of color should only use mineral sunscreen. That's a freaking curse! What makes it worse is the fact that this misconception comes from someone who calls themselves a "doctor". People with medium and dark skin can't wear a mineral sunscreen without looking like a zombie. As a medium-skinned person, i will NEVER buy any mineral sunscreens ever again. They're more expensive, non-elegant and very drying. It just feels out of touch with reality to tell people that chemical sunscreens are dangerous, yet they recommend expensive mineral sunscreens that come in a tiny bottle and rave about how good they are while also underapplying them and forgetting the fact that mineral sunscreens look different on different skin tones. Mind you, i'm not even a dark-skinned person, and i have never found a mineral sunscreen that looks completely invisible. Chemical sunscreens for the win!

As a poc I heard that we should use mineral sunscreens as it was the fact that chemical sunscreen produced heat and that makes hyperpigmentation worse. I have since learned this is untrue (basically) but I spent SOOOOO much time and money looking for mineral sunscreens and none of them worked for me. Not only did they leave an awful grey/lavender cast but for my skin it was actually more irritating as for me I found them really drying. I have found 3 or 4 chemical sunscreens that really work for me and the hyperpigmentation I had has improved significantly with daily reapplied application. Whatever you like and are happy to reapply will be what works for you. Doesn’t matter what brand or if it’s chemical or mineral - consistency is key and for that you need to be happy with how it looks and feels.

I hear a lot of that, “treat your facial skin like it might fall off if you touch it,” from Korean KZbin channels. I think it’s a cultural thing there, and therefore it’s something that won’t go away. In Japan, they are obsessed with foam in cleansers and the ideal foam is one that is so high that your hands don’t even touch your face. Only foam does. You’re using your hands to move the foam around your face. What frustrates me most is on skincare subreddits where I see people say, “I’m using 0.1% tretinoin every night and my face is burning and peeling and bright red! How long will this last?” And I just feel like…geez you want fast results but you’re literally going backwards. You’re damaging your skin because you think you NEED to apply as high a concentration, as often as possible. Or people in r/AsianBeauty who fully insist on ONLY using K-Beauty products. They say that their skin is inflamed, etc., and they list 42 products they use every day. And when you suggest minimizing their routine to a simple cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen for a few weeks to let it heal and calm down before adding back one product at a time, they completely ignore that and instead go on a quest to figure what ingredient they are allergic to. They then carry around a list of 20 ingredients they’re supposedly allergic to when the reality may be that they’re allergic to, like, 4 things and they’re just overwhelming their skin. Skincare is supposed to a fun, relaxing way to do a bit of self care. It’s not about trying to reach some stupid, unimportant, and unrealistic beauty standard. It’s not absolutely necessary to have every ingredient known to man in your skincare routine every day.

Hmmmm I’m glad you mentioned about the sunscreen myth for people of color. I watched Dr V (she has a KZbin channel also) always stress about people color should avoid chemical sunscreen. I use mineral sunscreen on a daily basis but some foundations such as Tom Ford have chemical sunscreen in them and I always get scared (I am light medium skin tone, of Asian origin) of using foundations such as those. I feel better now and I won’t be so afraid using them anymore. You are awesome, doc!!!!

I am glad that some of you think that Dr. V provides "some" great info...👀because it's really very minimum in comparison to all the wrong information about sunscreen filters for instance ! The thing is her title of Dr also means she has a greater respondibility towards her followers...!! You can't just provide some good info and a little of bad information ! It does not work that way ! You can just pick and chose according to want can benefit you for your business ! You cannot also judge a product only from the ingredient list...the whole formulation counts...have you ever wondered if she actually tested those products herself ??

I'm waking up in the morning and just lifting up on my neck and skin makes me feel perkier. lol Thank you for saying that there is no right or wrong skin care. I do get criticized some in my videos for the skin care I use, and it makes me not want to talk about it much. But if I like it and it seems to work for me, I don't think it's bad then. So that is much appreciated! Thank you so much for addressing all of this. It's so helpful. Take care!

Dr Dray blesses us with another excellent video. I have to say, as an Indian with light brown skin, at the beginning of my skincare journey, I was given all sorts of conflicting advice about which SPF to use. Thankfully in the end, I settled with Dr Drays advice and went for a tinted mineral SPF to prevent a cast, as I also have really sensitive skin with blemishes, and my skin has never looked better

Thank you🙌 Also, previous people I was watching (which I no longer do) were making me obsessed with "This week I found an even better product, etc...". After I had already spent $40.+ dollars to trust what they said in hopes that this would be even better. I got suckered into the media and influences making me run around chasing which I had no idea after a while what I was chasing anymore. Finally after finding your channel, things seems to fall into place. I got my skin on track with affordable products and am happy with my routine. Thank you soooo much for all you have done. Thank you so much for the comments about sunscreen during pregnancy. I MUCH prefer chemical to physical sunscreens, but there was so much against using chemical sunscreens (most specifically oxybenzone), that I have been exclusively using mineral sunscreen. I don’t have to worry about white cast as I am ghostly, but I just feel like chemical sunscreens sit and work better on my skin. Also, most of the sunscreens I use are Korean or European, so they don’t have oxybenzone in them anyway.

You're so right about "sunscreening" as general rule. My mother (86) has been distracted a cancerous formation on her nose skin a month ago. She was a nurse by the way. While checking her, the surgeon several times looked at me and said "you know that you have to wear sunscreen everyday, don't you". I do-since the 90s, being blond and blue eyed in a relatively sunny climate. Girls, it's crucial.

I finally went back to a dermatologist. I had a whole body cancer check. I work outdoors and I have for >15 years. I took Dr. Dray's advice about UVP clothing, hats, sunscreen, etc, and I had 0 suspect spots! :) The schedule they put me on for the morning: Wash with Cerave foaming facial cleanser, Moisturize with Cerave PM, (then 2 prescriptions for bacteria and fungi--determined after looking under a scope), and finally, a sunscreen (she said to keep using Paula's Choice SPF 50). Night is wash, moisturize, Tretinoin, and moisturize again. For my body, she was thrilled that I have been using Panoxyl (on Dr. Dray's advice). I'm waiting on blood work to see what oral medications I should take. That's it. No toners, serums, eye creams, expensive BS, etc. I understand Tretinoin can be expensive for some, but my insurance covers it because I have such bad acne. Thank you for giving such good advice for free.

Dr. Dray, I’m an Aesthetician and I LOVE your videos and agree with the majority of info. The part about social media creating so much confusion is spot on. When I get my clients on certain products, my approach is always “let’s keep it simple, enjoyable, and consistent” But I am constantly seeing clients product jumping all over the place because they saw something on Instagram. Then they’re skin takes a turn for the worse as it’s usually not something appropriate for their skin or they don’t have any idea at all what’s in it. This has been my career for 20 years and it’s never been harder than it is now to get clients to manage their expectations due to false info online. Crazy times. Thank you for all you do!! In my next life, I want to be a Derm like you❤

THANK YOU! As an Asian dealing with hyperpigmentation, for the past year I felt enormous pressure to wear mineral sunscreens… I have wasted a LOT of money testing different mineral sunscreens… Damn. There are very few that truly feel comfortable on the skin after reapplication. So many of them build up and are really drying. I experienced so much irritation through that alone over the past year, let alone the reticence I also felt with the weird casts they leave. Recently, I switched to more comfortable chemical sunscreens again, which are far easier to reapply and my skin deals better with them. Thank you Dr. I no longer feel bad about it.🙏🏼🌹💝🌟🏆
