Dermatologist Dr Dray on the skin benefits of double cleansing. How to double cleanse and common mistakes you may be making when you double cleanse. In this video I discuss choosing an oil based cleanser and skin types that benefit from double cleansing. Double cleansing involves using an oil based cleanser first, followed by a gentle cleanser. You also can use a micellar water as a first cleansing step, however, in my experience this can burn and sting around the eyes.

As a guy with very reactive dry rosacea prone skin, I wear only waterproof tinted SPF, and find that 2 pumps of Cerave hydrating cleanser does the job perfectly before bed, and 1 pump in the morning to remove retinol and any oils during the night. The biggest mistake I made was consulting Hirons the influencer, a while back, who told me to use a hot cloth and a boutique fancy cleansing balm, and to cleanse twice - it left me with red inflamed skin, she told me to preserver and not bother with SPF indoors at the office, but luckily I found Dr Dray whose advice fixed my skin. Never listen to influencers with zero skin care credentials

I use IS Clinical SPF50 in beige tint. It’s rarely mentioned but out of 20+ SPF’s I’ve tried for sensitive skin, this is the best. I also have light brown Indian skin, with Keratosis Pilaris on my neck - shaving is painful, it goes bright red, so I use Nivea 0% alcohol shave gel with no fragrance, the IS Clinical tinted SPF covers all my imperfections, the Cerave lotion soothes me

Fun fact: even our grandmothers double cleansed. To remove dirt and make up with a fatty cream and then wash the face with soap was the common evening routine “for the lady“ up until pretty recently. It only changed with the invention of modern cleansers, that promised to do in one step what was two steps befor.

Yes! I have an aunt who used Ponds cold cream followed by Noxema, which she washed off. She got her first wrinkles during chemo & radiation for breast cancer in the 70s! She worked on the wrinkles & started using sunscreen. When I married her nephew in 1989, she had zero wrinkles. They didn't come back until she was 78! My mother used to harp about not getting a tan. At least I listened to her about my face...and I'm glad I did.

In Asian countries we have another step before washing off the oil based remover - we use a little bit of water to massage the cleanser on your face so it "milkify" (I don't know the term in English) but not washed off yet. Once you give it a little circular motion and you should see the oil based cleanser looks white and milky, then you can wash it off completely with water. Then you use your gentle cleanser after. This really helps to get all the dirt and waterproof stuffs out.

Hi, thanks for this video. It’s always so helpful to have healthy skin practices reinforced by someone with Dr. Dray’s expertise. I’ve been double cleansing for a few years and love it. It is very gentle and effective on my skin. I just need to be careful not to use products that are too harsh or stripping to my skin barrier. My preference is for a cleansing balm like Heimish followed by a creamy cleanser like Aveeno nourishing oat cleanser. Happy cleansing everyone!

I've been using the double-cleanse method with Neutrogena fragrance-free sesame oil as a first step per your previous helpful tutorials, Dr. Dray. Another benefit I appreciate as someone with rosacea and sensitive skin is there's no need for any vigorous rubbing or scrubbing to get off the sunscreen film. The oil in the first step dissolves the sunscreen with a few gentle circular motions, then the second cleanser lathers enough for everything to rinse right off. Hugs & thanks as always for your excellent advice!

@@mignonalverson655 i do the exact same thing (use fragrance-free neutrogena sesame oil as a first step and then cerave face wash as second step) and i don’t find a major need to do any vigorous rubbing in order to get the sunscreen off. if i were to ever wear makeup or anything extra then i’d prob use a gentle facewipe or washrag w/ warm water to gently wipe off excess gunk but realistically just taking your time using your hands w/ circular motions should do the trick. technically there’s no major need for witch hazel/cottonball after either. just gently moisturize after and washes your pillowcases/bedsheets/sleep masks/covid face masks every week

I have been doubling cleansing since learning about it from you a couple of years ago. I use the avene oil cleanser first then either a gentle salicylic acid (neutropenia) or the Cerave gentle cleanser. That all works really well and seriously with all my Dr Dray learned pieces my skin is honestly beautiful and my dermatologist is delighted and proud :) thank you

I’ve been double cleansing for five years, now, even though I wear very little makeup. It’s the sunscreen that’s so difficult to remove, especially when I may have 3-4 layers of it at the end of a summer day when the sun shines until 9 pm! I must say that in that time, I have not suffered from whiteheads at all! I only wish I had known about this all the years I taught riding lessons and trained horses! My idea of double cleansing back then was to wash my face with soap and water over the bathroom sink, and then wash it again in the shower!🤦‍♀️. I can’t believe now that I was so clueless🤷‍♀️🤣

Happy Thursday, Dr Dray! I use either Albolene or the Inky List oat cleansing balm and I really like both of them. Both bought on your recommendation. 😊 I've been using the double cleanse method for a few years now and I think it really helps break up the sunscreen and make-up. I don't think I'd ever stop at this point. My skin seems pretty happy and I feel better knowing I'm not going to bed with sunscreen and makeup on my face. Thanks as always and I hope you have a lovely evening. 💞

I’ve found the eye makeup removers specific for that purpose (Lancôme, Estée Lauder and the less expensive drug store brands)to be extremely gentle and non-stinging, plus they don’t leave a film over your eye like a micellar water or an oil. However, I LOVE an oil cleanser for the rest of my face as a first step in a double cleanse.

I double cleanse at the sink each night but due to my acne prone skin have always followed up any cleanse routine with an oil free non-comedogenic 'toner'...not to 'balance' out my skin but to ensure I've removed ALL residue, that could be lingering on my face, down my neck or around my ears. Then proceed with any active topicals and a moisturizer. :)

I started double cleansing about two years ago. I wish I knew a out this when I was younger as I always just used a cream base cleanser that you wipe of and the tone like they used to after and I would always have makeup left on the cotton round. I no longer have to worry about that.

And having darkness around the eyes the next morning from the mascara that hadn't gotten completely removed, eeew. Those were dark times. I love double cleansing but I've only been doing that for around a year. I ditched cotton rounds a long time ago and just went in with gentle cleanser multiple times (usually around 3), but even though it seemed like a simpler routine with just one product it took me more time rubbing away especially at my mascara than with a double cleanse. Now I even wear waterproof mascara daily cause it gets melted away with no time with a balm or a cleansing oil.

I’ve been double cleansing for a few years now. I love it. It’s just the best way to gently remove makeup and sunscreen. I tried using sunflower oil at first. It didn’t work well. Wish I had these tips then, but you live and learn. I had to use really hot wash cloths to remove it. I did break out some. Most likely I wasn’t getting it all off. But now I love my ponds cold cream. It’s what I use most. The Clinique take the day away balm is great, bit expensive. Ponds gets the job done and doesn’t irritate my eyes. If I’m wearing winged eyeliner or just super heavy eye makeup I do like to use an eye makeup remover. The equate of the neutrogena remover is wonderful. It doesn’t sting my eyes. I soak a cotton round and let it sit for 30 secs or so. Then I gently wipe it off. Then I use my ponds cold cream.

I have the same issue, so I remove my eye makeup first w Bioderma then proceed with a double cleanse. With the Bioderma removing 99% of my eye makeup I only require a light follow up cleanse of the eyes, no more blurry eyes now that I use this method. Sometimes there is residual makeup around my eyes, I remove that w micellar water (Bioderma) & cotton swab.
