The Gaulish celts invented Chainmail . The roman gallic helmet , the Scutum were also invented by the celts. The spatha was also adopted from the celts. Gaulish celts also had fortified small „cities“. The Romans were worried that the Gauls will become to civilized and become a threat to Rome. It was the British celts that fought naked and even that was possibly roman propaganda. The British celts and the Gaulish celts were very different.
@toastedt140
@toastedt140 8 ай бұрын
@Andrej-tt1yi TBF there were also many smaller tribes with varying levels of technological and social cohesion. The "Gauls" as an entity didn't really exist until they unified to combat the roman campaigns. Gaul was a geographic area so the modern equivalent would be something like Midwesterners or Eastern Europeans. Some Gauls had constant contact with Romans while others only met them when they went on campaign. A lot of the "filthy naked tribes" were just the poorer ones the romans could bribe to switch sides. There was also a propoganda element. The further you got away from Rome, the further the tribes got from being "civilized." We only have Roman sources, but there are some cool anthro theories about the nakedness of Gaulic tribes.

They also came upon current-day Ukraine and also surmised it was one of the edges of the world. They found it during the mud season, so they deduced that this was where matter began to lose coherent form and the natural laws of the universe ceased to exist. I kinda don't blame them, I've seen dudes trying to drive or walk through it and they just can't, the ground begins to act more like a liquid. The references in this video are superb, although personally I would have chosen a different accent for the Hebrews. The Yiddish accent, fundamentally, is just the accent of an Eastern European guy fluent in German and a Slavic language like Ukrainian or Polish. Granted, I understand why you chose the Yiddish accent, as to Anglophone viewers it is probably the most recognizeably "Jewish" accent, and it isn't like the Modern Israeli accent is free of Eastern European influences. New Yorker accent would also not be the ideal choice, as it does not contain many influences from the Middle East. I don't envy the dilemma you must have faced in assigning accents to all these ancient civilizations. Thanks again for the video 💙

Can we actually know what accents sounded like 2000 years ago?
@danukil7703
@danukil7703 8 ай бұрын
@@thesenate1844 In certain cases, and with careful effort, one could make reasonably educated guesses as to how a speaker of an ancient language might sound in English, if we have a good understanding of the language's phonology. From what I understand of current scholarship, linguists and biblical scholars seem to have a good grasp of Classical Hebrew's phonology. With enough sources, one could hypothetically reconstruct how a speaker of Classical Hebrew might sound in English, although this is far from my area of expertise

@redvelvetcakie
@redvelvetcakie 8 ай бұрын
@@feral_orc we actually do know what the Tiberian accent of Hebrew sounded like, it wasn't the jersualemite dialect but it was closer, Israeli Hebrew is based off the sephardi dialect which is reduced in terms of the sound bank and probably wouldn't be as accurate
@therat1117
@therat1117 8 ай бұрын
@@redvelvetcakie Israeli Hebrew is not based off the 'Sephardi dialect', the spoken form is basically German pronunciation layered over a highly Europeanised and simplified version of Hebrew. It is completely artificial. The 'assigned pronunciations' for Europeanised versions of Hebrew words were a compromise between commonly used pronunciations in different regions of Western Europe, and what a German speaker could actually pronounce. Arab Jews, who could likely speak Hebrew more-or-less in the Tiberian or Biblical pronunciation, were not involved at all in the creation of 'Modern' Hebrew.

But isn't that what Romans were all about? Taking what's the best of each faction specialised in and then copy ans or improve it? Pila wasn't a roman invention, nor the aquadeccue, or even their famous Gladius swords. No Romans learned from the best and then use it to their advantage, if not they'll be left behind like other factions like the Greeks with their Phalanx.

Never mind that, while being an OK motivational leader, she was a terrible general... And agreed on Caratacus... now he was a chad, leading forces to resist the Roman invasion for almost a decade and showing tactical knowledge that even the xenophobic Romans were willing to acknowledge in writing. And they never were able to kill him on the battlefield... his war only came to an end when Cartimandua betrayed him.
