My dad would sympathise with you Vince, 50 years ago when we first came to Western Australia my dad was working on the then new fuel tankers at Port Beach, in the broiling West Australian sun weld a seam xray it, weld another xray it, sometimes it was over 40 centigrade. Of course I didn't appreciate his effort in doing this, only now do I see it for what it was a gruelling torturous job. A great video as usual Vince love the Rolls videos.

Welcome to the world of welding, been doing it for 44 years, neck ache, back ache burns in the head burns in the fingers, burns in the ears, burns where the sun don't shine, and various trips to the eye department at the hospital, arc eyes, grinding grit stuck in the eye, I've now got a slight rusty looking eye, mistaken arc eye for a bit of crap in my eye, it's all good fun.

Definitely ultra scary, Vince. Hard to watch at times. But your grit and unwillingness to "not prevail" is greatly to your credit. I definitely got the heeby-jeebies through the internet watching you maneuver that spring out and back in! I am looking forward to seeing the Rolls back on the road. Neck/Head support when lying down in tight spaces - When working in spaces where I need to lift my head slightly off the ground for long periods I have two solutions. 1. grab an old traffic cone, stuff something soft inside, lay it down on its side and poke it under your neck. moving head or cone gives 'comfortable' variable height support. 2. A pump up blood pressure arm cuff under you head. Squeeze the air pump bulb / release pressure for height adjust. Wrap in old woolen jumper sleeve to avoid punctures and embers. if something nasty happens (insert sound effect here), you get less skull trauma than from using a solid object like a brick..

Well done :) Definetely not an easy job, not a lot of space there and even the weather made it more difficult, but you still did it. I've probably mentioned already in the past, that I've experienced rear coil spring failure in my 1990 Mazda 323 sedan, happened sometime in the early 2000's. While driving. It broke right when the suspension was compressed on bumpy road (winter time) and made loud bang noise, probably most of the noise was spring hitting the strut tower top plate with enormous force, I could even feel some vibrations at the driver's seat. The car was 1990 Mazda 323 with McPherson struts front and back (spring and shock absorber in one unit). The spring snapped at the top coil, so there was not very big distance for the rest of the spring to hit strut tower top plate, but still made such a big bang. There indeed is quite a force loaded in them.

In a twisted way I'm kind of glad someone else out there has gone through the insane struggle of doing lots of welding under a car on the floor on their back. I completely resonate with the hatred for having no space to do anything, holding the welding gun above your head, cant turn your head without hitting it, unable to see what I'm doing because its dark, and then getting nozzles blocked or wire sticks out, or splatter down your sleeve or in your ear hole, stomach muscles aching, neck muscles aching. (check my welding video). I was using a spray can on its side as a pillow to save me holding my head up so much lol. It actually got so bad I modded my welding mask to have LED strip lights on it, powered by an 18650. So I can see what I'm welding hands free, with no obstructions.

With that kind of weld the strength comes from the fillet rather than it going all the way through. So just a bit of heat and slight bumpiness on the back is what you want. But to repeat my comment on the last video that wire is not supposed to be used for multiple passes. Really you should take the arm off and do a nice TIG or MIG weld on the bench. I think you did absolutely the best job you could have in the circumstances and with the equipment. Will probably hold but I doubt it's as strong as the base metal.

Migs don't like coils in the welding lead. Try to keep it as straight as possible by moving the welder back. Flux core wire does spatter much more than with gas. Once you've tried an argon gas mix, you'll never go back. The difference in weld quality is night and day.

Did you try flipping the electrode polarity on the welder? Is it AC or DC output? Try on scrap metal to see which way makes the least splatter and the most penetration. Flux core welds create slag, glad you figured that part with trying to weld on top of weld. Holding back the urge to "sproing" is commendable! At the very least you may now drive it to a shop and get everything proper, good luck!

FYI - it is the MOT test (old Govt department name when it was introduced in 1963 ish - Ministry of Transport - now Department of Transport but still called the MoT test by all). Annual test of road worthiness once the vehicle is 3 years old. Many garages can do it - its not done at government garages (like in many countries). Was introduced to get rid of the large number of 1930s vehicles still being driven in the early 60's that were disproportionately involved in accidents due to rust, wear and tear etc - the war and subsequent economic disruption played a part. Also manufacturers wanting to sell more cars - many cars from that era were lucky to last 3 years without rust or major issues.

The welds look okay, but it's impossible to say how good they are without checking with an ultrasound or x-ray machine. If you get the chance I'd recommend having a skilled welder go over them again. In my experience: if you don't see any deformation you're probably not adding enough heat. A skilled welder will know how to lay the welds in the correct order so that the deformation will be minimal.

Shims allow movement, effectively providing a moveable platform, especially if they are greased. This would be planned to reduce noise and also stop the spring grinding into the bowl. There is a good chance the springs will move on heavy bumps and road surfaces, in a horizontal plane as well as he obvious vertical plane. Sorry great entertainment, but I felt the pain all the way through and makes me feel sad and slightly stressed.

@rockubtzer Жыл бұрын
Rather than buy the RR tool, you could buy threaded rod, cut it to length you need just be sure to get the hardest rod, nuts & washers offered. For added security weld two or more nuts together then weld them to the bottom of the threaded rod after it is cut to length to make it a long bolt. Grease the threads on the rod and two thick washers as well. Drop the two washers on to rod so they rest on the nuts welded to the rod then feed it up through your spring and tighten to compress it. the more bolts you weld together the less likely it will be to strip the threads on the nuts or rod. You can use a deep socket ratchet tool to avoid breaking the welds between the stack of nuts. I'd have dug a hole in Dads driveway so I could have stood in it to do all that welding! Then told him... I think you have a mole in your yard Dad.
