Elsa has always wants to lock but doesn't know the difference between lock styles to know exactly what she wants.
There are many different varieties of locks based on the look of them when they are personalized to taste but there are only 3 different kinds of locks.
Traditional Locks are standard locks many individuals wear. The sizes of these locks are about the width of your index finger.
Sister Locks are very small in comparison to Traditional Locks and the size of these locks is usually smaller than your pinky finger. These can lock quicker being that the twists are smaller than traditional locks but this will also depend on the grade curl and texture of your natural hair.
Free Form Locs are freely matted clusters of hair.
Free Form Locks should not be manipulated or encouraged to lock from your own doing. These locks will clump and condense on their own without the latch hook technique or palm rolling technique. Cleaning and moisturizing these locks are just the same as Traditional Locks and Sister Locks but grooming techniques are not required. The only acceptable manipulation for Free Form Locks is just separating your clumps at the roots and smoothing stray hairs where you want them to be to keep your locks separate. If not, your hair will turn into one big lock!
If you like dreadlocks but don't want the commitment, check out my Yarn Braids DVD for a faux look!

I've had locs for almost 14 months and it's the best decision I've ever made. I can even still do box braids, Havana twists and crochet braids over them. They are very versatile

Great intro for locs. I just recently loc'd my hair and I chose to do so because I no longer wanted to straighten my hair and my natural loose hair was becoming too much work. I did do research before locking my hair and am still learning more as I continue this journey. It truly is a journey because your hair goes through stages and aren't loc'd over night or even in months. For some they may not like the changes their hair goes through. You learn to accept your beauty in a light that isn't magnified in most communities!

Good informational video. But please be aware of the adjectives used to describe freeform locs. Freeform locs are not weird... They are your hair at its most natural state. They are beautiful and spiritual and thick and healthy. Check out Adette Wellington and SpiritualTwins to explore different ways to describe freeform locs. Much love and appreciation.

This video was a really good start. I have been someone interested, but now I really did my research and want to loc for spiritual reasons, not just because it's trendy. I think I'll go with the sister locs. Thanks for the info.

Hello. I'm thinking of locking my hair but am torn between types of locz and method. I was told that interlcoking can be very bad for your hair in the long run, so I want to avoid that at all costs. However, at the same time, I need locz that will hold as I'm a very active person. I was really thinking of bradelocz or nappylocz but I noticed a lot of people used interlocking for those types of dreads. What method and type would you recommend? P.S. I'm like 4b, 4c hair. Thanks.

Interlocking lasts longer than Palm rolled locs because of the way that it's done. You can swim, wash your hair and sweat without anything unraveling. I have 4c hair and I've been freeforming for about a year.

I don't think I would ever loc my hair under any circumstances. Now don't get me wrong I love Traditional Locs. And I was surprised that with the Natural Hair Movement there where not More really Popular Loc channels on You Tube. And I don't think it's the commitment that scares off naturals from locs because relaxers ....no going back and 90% of us have done it. So what.......I think and it's just My OPINION that they can be a little masculine. And I don't know if you have a lot of black men with shoulder length Locs or longer in your area but I do and.....they carry themselves differently. It's subtle but there's a sense of empowerment the locs give to Black Men. And this Does NOT happen with Men of other races with just long hair. There is NO sense of empowerment from their long hair-in fact on some it can read a bit feminine and if that's not the look the look they want they compensate with a beard. But as soon as I noticed this sense of energy and empowerment from Black Men with Locs I started watching Women with Locs to see if I noticed the same thing ........:........... and I have not. If anything some (some NOT all) seem to go to Great lengths to Always add a feminine touch ie flower, barrette, curl the Locs, SOMETHING but don't seem to be comfortable with them as they are. I think I would be one of those women that would feel uncomfortable in them as is and since Locs are Still controversial .......(sigh) I think you can take on ANYTHING if YOU are at a good place with it or Know you could get there. With Locs I just don't see that Happening for me. However it Does make me Admire even MORE all the Natural Women who can Embrace Locs!

I, personally, have had traditional locs for 6 years and I now have been sisterlocked for 20 months and I love my locks and the way they make me feel. I think your comments about female lock wearers wanting to make them look more feminine is a little silly because we are women and should be feminine...that is the equivalent of someone saying to someone who chooses to wear relaxers or their natural hair that they always have to wear it down and straight, no they wear their hair curled, braided, in pony tails, etc...that is the beauty of having locs, the versatility and being able to wear them in different styles without worry!...I wear my hair in many different ways and I love it... I am not arguing because I am glad you shared your opinions and thoughts, I just wanted to share mine with you also. Every woman has to see the beauty within themselves and do what is best for them...but I think many women would be surprised at how wearing locs would make them look and feel!...There are many beautiful female loc wearers here on yt with their own styles and looks and give me a lot of inspiration and information...
