I didn't really care for the song at first, but it's the kind of song that grows on me and now I really like it, just like I love the album Gone Troppo. George Harrison was a very whimsical personality, and of course he was a great guitarist and songwriter. The older I get the more I see the musicians I love so much dying. Christy McVie of Fleetwood Mac just passed away. She was 79 years old. She was unquestionably my favorite Fleetwood Mac member. RIP sweet Christie McVee.

This is an amazing find. I saw "Time Bandits" when it first came out in 1981 and loved the song, but as far as I know there was never a soundtrack recording of the movie. It wasn't until I stumbled across the song on "Gone Troppo" that I finally had a recording of it (I had bought the album for the song "Gone Troppo", and was not aware that "Dream Away" was the song from the movie until I heard it, which was very exciting). But it wasn't until tonight, 39 years later, that I realized that what I thought was music written by the soundtrack composer from the beginning and end of the film was actually Harrison's work, and specifically part of this song. This version makes the song so much richer and, for fans of the movie, provides a wonderful connection between the song and the film. For my money, Harrison had the best post-Beatles career, by far. His amazing and extensive body of work over the 31 years between the breakup and his death overshadows that of John Lennon and Paul McCartney in terms of breadth and scope (though, for sure, Lennon and McCartney still made some great individual songs in the post-Beatle era). Not bad for the "third-best" songwriter on the Beatles who was only given one token song per album by the juggernaut that was Lennon-McCartney. In any other band, Harrison would've been the superstar, but he was eclipsed by the two greatest rock composers of the 20th century during the 1960s.

My expedience was much the same. I thought George had decided not to commercially release the Time Bandits song (which is not listed in the film by its title). Then, upon discovering "Gone Troppo" on CD, Dream Away suddenly popped up to my sheer delight!

IMO George Harrison became the best songwriter of The Beatles. I agree that up until he died Harrison he had the best post Beatles career going. Paul McCartney keeps cranking out albums and has concerts all the time and is now worth an estimated 1 billion dollars or more. Paul McCartney is an amazing talent but when it comes to post Beatles careers I'd take Harrison. ATMP is the best selling post Beatles album, selling well over 6 million copies which was unheard of in 1971. He followed that up with Living In The Material World which is kind of an extension of All Things Must Pass. When George Harrison started collaborating with Jeff Lynne he came out with some real gem albums. Cloud 9, Brainwashed really showcased the talents of George Harrison. And his collaborations with Tom Scott and the LA Express are fantastic. George Harrison will always be my favorite Beatle. And he'll l always be my favorite post Beatle.

@@barkboingfloom I've read where Gilliam the director of Time Bandits did not want to turn this movie into a musical. So basically he did not want Harrison to write a slew of songs for the album which he had done. So ironically the song Dream Away only appears at the end of the movie when the credits are ran. Harrison and Gillian never collaborated again. Harrison was quoted as saying that Gilliam owed him an apology, but I don't believe he ever got one.
@Ramon1710 Жыл бұрын
@@randycoursey7230 Per John Cleese, Gilliam is pretty much limited to two phrases, “I really like that,” and “That really pisses me off.”

Not to mention that George also worked with, and dated, Madonna herself in the 1980s. The Quiet Beatle he was!

Wow! I never knew this existed until now. I always thought that the intro music here was just added as part of the general score/soundtrack of 'Time Bandits,' and not really a part of Harrison's song. Very cool!

I feel there might be a difference between soulful and spiritual, with both being slight shades of the same color and George's voice during this era being the latter. Something calm and soothing, but not weak. Maybe like a father singing to his young children. Jeez, I'm not exactly trying to make Messianic comparisons, but I do love this period in George's work. Positive and playful. Wistful yet reassuring. A perfect pairing with Crackerbox Palace too.

I'm currently off work and have been watching a lot of Beatles interviews on YT, concerts, etc. I remember when All Things Must Pass 1st came out, I played it over and over and over...you get the idea. I watched where Mick Jagger inducted them into the R n R Hall of Fame, he called them the "4 headed monster". It had to be these 4 individuals to do everything they did, Even now 50+ years later, they're still incredibly funny, musically fantastic, etc. And so many of us feel the same. :-) Really enjoyed this video!

The intro to this song has always made me think it would have made a good score to a scene of the Bandits sneaking in and taking the map from wherever the Supreme Being had put it. Just as an alternative to the map intro scene that was used.

With all of the musicians that were present why wasn't this song played at Concert for George?
@velveetaslingshot2 жыл бұрын
Probably because he did not enjoy working with Gilliam and the song was basically a middle finger in his face. They wouldnt have wanted any negative energy to represent George because thats not who he was.

For DECADES I've wondered what the chorus meant, and it just dawned on me (after I saw the cover of Troppo)... it's apparently Japanese. お らいな え (O Raina E) - according to Google Translate - means "Farewell". I'm not 100% positive on that, since I'm largely interpreting the lyrics by ear, and Google Translate is notorious for mistranslating. It's been a struggle trying to get through the rest of it. If anyone knows more about this, please share. 😊
@Brandanus3 жыл бұрын
it seems google didn't like my comment, trying again. The song was released '82 in Japan and is called オ・ラ・イ・ナ・エ (o-ra-i-na-e, which doesn't mean 'farewell') based on the first line of the song. There is a japanese Wiki article you should be able to find & translate
