My professor at uni was the project leader for that motor at Rotax. If you know the man behind it, there is no question why that motor is as good as it is. He's currently lecturing a course specifically about engines and I feel like the most fortunate person to be able to learn from him. Also, such a chill dude haha. It's quite funny because I always wanted an RSV 1000, and when I found out that I'm standing infront of the guy who developed that motor, I nearly lost my mind. Unfortunately I still can't afford one, because student haha.

If you look at the Rotax homepage this engine was built from 1997 until 2011 87.369 times. Couldn`t be too bad. One of them is in my Falco SL from 2001. Greetings from Hamburg, Germany.

But he is flogging it to get more parts on his 21st Century R1 with new brakes so can just go 1 second around a track? Or have i got the wrong end of the camel? Chris has a problem buying bikes and then getting bored of them it seems, no long term relationships ? I see this all the time with people who just like buying stuff for the novelty factor. My wife being the prime example before I ran over her. Twice. Once backwards. That's a joke by the way. It got stuck in neutral half way through. I get the feeling constant bike buying and fettling them is just an outward side of Chris' s long term mental issues. And on that bombshell ....

I agree on the fun thing. Fast is far from everything. Just sold a 2022 S1000RR and replaced it with a KTM890 SMT. The RR is perfect, can't fault it, BUT the SMT is so much more fun. Smiles per mile ratio is through the roof! In the real world on tight twisty Norwegian mountain and coastal roads with pot holes and bumps everywhere and terrible asphalt the SMT is faster, more comfy and uses damn near half the amount of fuel.

Love bikes of this era. I still ride a 2000 Yamaha r1. Fantastic machine built at the height of the analogue superbike arms race. Probably no faster on the road today than a KTM adventure but still makes me smile every time I ride it. Looked at trading for a modern machine several times but nothing today compares to the raw experience of the old superbikes. Great video.

I had similar with the blue Marchessinis, still a cracking wheel which was super easy to clean with WD40 (odd to remember that). No radials, but Ohlins. Cracking bike, engine, although lumpy around town, is indeed bombproof with Futuras and Falcos going to 6 figure mileages, but needs a strong battery. Thanks Chris. These are the bikes that emote.

Great vid, thanks Chris! I have an ‘06 Tuono that I absolutely love. I swapped my R1 for it last year and have done a bunch of touring on it as well as thrashing it round my local roads and commuting on it. The noise and the drama, it gets under your skin. Puts a grin on my face every time. I’ve been lucky enough to buy my R1 back and despite having some nice bits (Ohlins, etc), I prefer the Aprilia. So up for sale it will go. I went from a Suzuki TL1000S to an 03 RSV Mille, and to be perfectly honest, I missed the TL motor as it had far more character than the Rotax V60. I didn't miss anything else about that unreliable, unpredictable and unforgiving b*tch lump of pig iron (Suzuki definitely lied about the weight!) with sh*t brakes, but that engine certainly had soul.

I used to be an Aprilia dealer and had 2 warranty claims in 9 years, a kill switch on a 03 mille and coil pack on 04 RSVR factory. Super reliable rotax engines, my friend had a 55000 mile old mille that had been crashed 3 times, raced for 2 seasons and had only ever had consumables and a sprag bearing. Wonderful bikes!
@ktmkevin
@ktmkevin 5 ай бұрын
You stopped being an Aprilia dealer late 04 then, right before they all broke down? Don't get me wrong I loved my 1st gen Tuono but the list of known issues was just too long.. Sprag clutch, rear brake cylinder, starter relais, draining the battery when not in use, plug to the reg/rec frying itself.. I actually experienced every. Single. One of them.
@paultaylor4154
@paultaylor4154 5 ай бұрын
@@ktmkevin Maybe I was lucky! 02-11 I was selling new Aprilia's. O4 was a bit of a pain though as Aprilia stopped paying their parts suppliers as they were in financial trouble so parts were a pain for a while- my personal 04 gen 2 RSVR Factory which was new then lost all its miles when the battery was disconnected (!) (common fault with 04 Aprilia's and Ducati 999s with ECU memory and no doubt one of the reasons there`s so many `low mileage' ones about) and liked a clutch and rear brake bleed but otherwise was very reliable. I would imagine earlier gen 1 Milles and Tuono's are more reliable as simpler?

I had a gen 1 Tuono (that i'd still have it hadn't been nicked... bastards) and it was a f'ckin fabulous bike. The only problems i had with mine were the reg rec, and a ball bearing popped out of the clutch basket. This was a year-round commuter, so not just sunny weather riding. I upgraded the starter cables so I wouldn't do the sprag, and i Gabro'd the exhaust headers. Perfect machine. miss it daily
@pauln6803
@pauln6803 5 ай бұрын
@@ktmkevin Sprag is almost always due to low battery/starter unable to overcome the compression of the motor. There's a good reason why larger capacity batteries were the most common modification to all the Rotax V60 apes. The early models had reg/rec wiring that wasn't really up to the current, and coupled with the heat from the reg/rec was prone to melting. The rear brake was always a pain due to its horizontal mounting on a big, hot engine. A home made heat shield and a banjo with integrated bleed nipple pretty much fixes that. Why Aprilia didn't mount the rear brake m/c on the rearsets like the Japanese I will never know... But yeah, no matter what bike you buy, there's always a risk of buying a cursed one. I had 3 Millie's and the biggest problem was four wheeled road users seemingly targeting them!

I had a '97 TLS. I still miss the engine and the induction roar, but in no way do I miss the handling, brakes are unpredictable behaviour. After one bruising too many I sold it and took a ride on a used 2003 RSV: the difference in handling and the power of the Brembo brakes had me sold.
@GazBromley
@GazBromley 5 ай бұрын
@@pauln6803 i,ve done 100 miles today on mine, i find the handling decent enough, but the brakes are lacking. I have a 98 ZX-9R and ive done a caliper rebuild and theyre really good now, think i'll do that to my TL too. That engine is shockingly good even to this day.
@pauln6803
@pauln6803 5 ай бұрын
@@GazBromley Just like anything else, it's fine in isolation. I had a Nitron race shock to replace the much maligned rotary damper on mine, which helped it hold a line better, but the base RSV Mille (not even the sexy Ohlins and OZ equipped RSV-R) was just leagues ahead in the handling, and those Brembo (Goldline?) brakes are still good enough to beat some of the supposedly more up to date equipment. I'm not sure anything will beat the OG TL engine for character, (the Rotax V60 is smoother and less "alive") and I still think Suzuki cutting its balls off to make the SV1000 behave was bordering on criminal.
@GazBromley
@GazBromley 5 ай бұрын
@@pauln6803 lol it was criminal. I cant believe Suzuki did that. I still have the rotary damper...for me, i never push the TL to hard, its 27 years old, and i'm happy plodding, mainly because if i bin it i cant get plastics...i'm gold and green. Plus i have an MT-10 for daily and that thing is a total riot. Also i love the RSV Mille, such a cool bike.

Having owned an RSV Mille, a Mille Factory and an RSVR back in the day, I bought one of these in 2014 wirh 10,000 miles on for just £4k. It had the sometimes present/sometimes not carbon Edwards air box fitted and correct matching Eprom but I felt no big difference really over my previous bikes. I just tidied it up and sold it for £1k profit having 'ticked the box'. The swelling plastic tank is the biggest problem on all but the very first steel tank Millies. And the sprag clutch failing and the Ohlins fork seals that need changing with alarming regularity. Otherwise pretty solid.

Beautiful bike, Chris! My first bike was a lightly used SL1000 Falco that a friend gave me a great deal on because he found a clean low-mile Mille. It had an early version of the superbike engine and I had no business riding it as a novice (a great thing about American licensing laws at the time), but if nothing else, it taught me throttle control. I still remember how I could feel the power pulses of the engine in the ground below the bike when I was stopped - forgot to mention this was thanks to the Termi slip-ons that sounded absolutely killer. I also remember going to an Aprilia dealer at the time and checking out one of these Edwards replicas - super sweet... I was a Ducati guy at the time, still am really, but those bikes really opened my eyes on Aprilia, and I've actually owned more Aprilias than Ducatis at this point.

I had an 02 R in 08, then last year I returned to the R with one of the very last off the line, yellow black and gold 7k mile minters. Have been blessed to have some lovely superbikes but I returned to the poster bike that I always loved and its a queen.

The thing I like most about this bike, is it doesn’t have AIDS

Talking about the power at the end, BHP numbers mean nothing, example is my Y2k bike, does has only 144bhp at the crank (about the same as this maybe), does 0-60 in 3 secs stock, does the quarter mile in under 10 secs, some of those 200bhp bikes can't quite do that, they just have a higher top speed that we would barely if ever use. These old bikes are the best bikes, and much cheaper too.
