Schlatt apologists: Schlatt won fair and square and didn't even cheat, whenever he needed someone they betrayed him, sure he violently executed tubbo, destroyed national landmarks, and was a raging drunk, but democracy chose him, all tommy did was do a violent insurrection, how horrible of him. Wilbur Apologists: Wilbur was an honest guy, he didn't deserve anything to happen to him, he started l'manburg for freedom and to resist oppression, not to do bad things like deal drugs. He lost his election he tried to rig and had to fight back against the horrible democractically elected leader jschlatt. but by that time it was too late so he made the hero's sacrifice and destroyed l'manburg once and for all.

Me as an author, fascinated by the fact that almost every Dream SMP characters are really bad people, but because they are presented as complex and charismatic, can grow an incredible amount of fans to defend them, showing how the human nature can accept everything as long as they can justify it xD (And even more incredible is the fact that irl, the players behind the characters seems like a bunch of incredibly nice people!)

Dream SMP characters are all morally gray in my opinion which makes them very fascinating. Even people like Dream or Schlatt have reasoning behind their actions that could be possibly justified. It just depends on who you watch and follow the perspective of. :) (And yes, its funny that even with their messed up actions, they’re all great people irl)

Morally grey is kind of a tricky thing, because everybody can use reasoning to justify the most horrible action you can think of, because nobody want to accept that they are the villain of their own story (I mean, I will not list the most used exemples of the human history, but I guess you all know the multiple references I can make). The only exception is, we can accept to be the villain in the eyes of the people we hate, sure, but not in our own eyes. And it's normal, it's what make us human, and we all do this on a daily basic with really little things, like telling white lies because we don't want to hurt someone, or insulting someone after they hurt our feelings. But since Dream SMP is set in a virtual univers, the little things are way out of proportion and we have on a regular basis murder, arson and torture just to name a few... So yeah, at that point, it's really difficult for me to say that it's just gray, even if I know it's in a virtual univers where big things like that have in fact little impact compare to the same crime done in the real world xD I guess that's why it's easier to pick a side and defend it in Dream SMP, because we all know that in the end, it's only a video game, and that the people behind it are nice anyway. If the same story would have been set in a realistic TV show with problematic actors, I'm not sure people would have reacted the same way... well, at least I hope so... (Oh, and sorry for my shitty grammar, yes I'm an author, but english is not my first langage, so yeah ^^')

The major difference here is that Techno actually has a few reasons to do bad stuff. Most villains have like 1 thing or just no reasons like Dream and the disks. Schlatt with no reason and Wilbur with wanting to destroy Manburg. That is something that not a lot of people actually look into. Techno is an anti-hero

Due to the fact that he's fighting Son Goku(The protagonist) for the protection of his own universe. And Son Goku is also fighting for his universe (if you haven't watched DBS then you'll be confused and I'm not really gonna explain.) But yeah. Jiren is not evil. But since he is standing in the way of the protagonist, he is an antagonist. A villian is a man who is evil. He does not care for anything but destruction and suffering. A villian cannot be sympathized with as they do bad things. Meanwhile the actions of an antagonist can be understood and can be sympathized with. Nowadays media only really uses Antagonists and any actually evil antagonist is considered a bad final boss which is wrong. An antagonist can also be a "villian" but with good intentions and goals and their way of achieving those goals is wrong. Thus, conflict between the protagonist, who wants to protect people from the antagonist's actions, and the Antagonist who wants to do the right thing but doesn't know that the way he's trying to do that good thing is wrong begins. For example, Assassin's Creed. The conflict between the Assassins and Templars is just that. Templars want order and peace which is a good thing but to do that they want to control the whole world. The Assassins also want a good thing which is freedom and peace but Templars want control and peace. Thus, conflict between the two begins. I hope you understand. An antagonist is usually not 'evil' and if someone is evil they can be called an antagonist but they're really just a villian.

one thing cool about how you described techno's character, its what makes him so interesting, not because he's a good person, but because it makes sense for him to see the government as he does. what you said there is not just how tehcno's biggest fans see him, but how his character sees the smp. he's not justified for what he's done, but you can see how he would think they way he thinks because of what happened to him from his point of view you know how in the jrwi podcast that slimecicle dm'd called "convergence" he invited wilber one episode and he said that he has been a lifelong dm for years at this point? the smp starts to kind of make sense when you consider that lol

... I'm slowly getting the feeling that I'm maybe, just maybe, apologizing most characters' way of thinking. Not because I agree that what they did was necessarily right, but because I can get behind why they did it. We're at a point in the storyline where nearly everyone did something that would be considered very, very morally questionable, and depending on whose viewpoint you share, you will interpret the characters' actions differently. I think part of the charm of the Dream SMP is that you can change perspectives and get a different take on the plot. It's weird, but sometimes, you will start to sympathize with multiple characters, even although they assume completely different positions in a conflict. It comes down to seeing the humanity in them, I suppose. I think that Tommy probably shouldn't have gotten into fights that weren't necessary, shouldn't have been so rude, shouldn't have caused as much chaos and destruction as he did, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't have the right to be treated with respect or to express himself or to feel betrayed. I am not saying that he shouldn't suffer the consequences of his actions simply because he is a child or because he is good-hearted, but I do agree that he's already been punished enough (especially after the emotional abuse Dream put him through), and that he is entitled to his own happiness and peace. I think that Techno probably shouldn't have spilled as much blood as he did, shouldn't have been as drastic and harsh in his pursuit of anarchy as he was, but I understand that it's hard for him to refrain from violence because of the voices, I understand why he would want L'Manburg to go down after all the pain it caused and I understand he was angered by the fact that Tubbo's regime hunted him down despite him wanting to live a peaceful life. Just because he's a powerful fighter, it doesn't mean that he cannot feel peer pressure or that he can't be heart-broken, and while that doesn't give him an excuse to blow up everyone's home or to kill people, I still hope that he finds people that genuinely care for him, simply because being objectified all the time must hurt a lot. If wanting them to be treated as fallible people with emotions means that I'm both a Tommy and Techno apologist then fine, I'll take it. You're probably right, anyways.

I feel so informed man, this was gold 👌 I'm definitely leaning towards being a Techno/Philza apologist, but not really for their actions (cause they did a lot of inexcusable bad shit) but for their beliefs. I feel the need to justify a lot of things about them because although they're destructive, they are far from evil or villainous. And yeah, poor Tommy man. He's a traumatized child. And I feel the need to stress that sometimes because so many characters wanna game-end him, and I'm like "dude he's just a kid, calm down" but at the same time, I find it extremely annoying that Tommy can shift from being a reliable comrade to a dunce lacking basic common sense. Dream just sucks. He may have been nice once, and I acknowledge that Tommy kinda ruined what Dream was trying to achieve with his SMP, but he's just a meanie head who finds pleasure in manipulating children. I also think I might be a little bit of an Eret apologist. Nobody talks about Eret except how he fucked everyone over that one time. ONE TIME. After that, he became such a lad of a character and no one pays attention to him. Sad day.

As a Tommy apologist this is kinda funny yet true that it hurts me and as a Tubbo apologist I'mma add an argument for him. Tubbo mostly did what he saw as objectively right. When he was made president he did his very best. His mistakes can be chalked up to mostly hes always been in a position where he had to listen to a higher up and this was the first time he had to decide on his own. He was just too trusting. He did his best for the country he eveb chose L'manburg over his best friend. He didn't have a choice. They couldn't afford to fight another war. Him trying to be on good terms with Dream good on paper but would've proved to be beneficial if he didn't have any ulterior motives. Quackity was the one to suggest the execution of Technoblade and of all people Tubbo executing Techno would've been totally understandable. He did after all destroyed his country and killed him before.Tubbo didn't mean for everything to get out of hand. Most of his decisions were all good on paper (except the festival). Thats the thing he chooses seemingly objectively right choices. If you were put in his situation, you would probably do the same. (just forget your any apologist and look at it from his POV) You've been made to either kick your best friend out or have your country go into war again just as it just recovered. You've been given the chance to execute the man who destroyed your country and killed you. You strained your friendship by exiling your best friend since you had no real choice and you're barely taken seriously by your people. You're regarded as a pawn and accessory to your best friend. Also hes just a kid. (I don't know of this makes sense but its 3am and I habe to sleep now.)

The funny thing is that I can pick out things that I agree with in each, sometimes more than others, but some of the arguments I was just like “omg that’s not at alll trueeee” I think that I have characters that I agree with more, just because of where my stance and opinion is on the things that’s happening, but I don’t think all of them are completely in the right. Every character on the smp are both heroes and villains. They have their own ideology and philosophy, that contradict other peoples opinions. Each person's ideology is valid and right. But you cant be an apologist of one character without hating another. Everyone does something horrific for what they see as valid and good intentions. No one is truly innocent, not even tommy. Sure hes a child and deserves a childhood but hes manipulated other characters without even realising it. Sure phil didnt act like a farther figure to tommy but he was never his dad. Phil had no obligation to take that role for him.
