The story of the Dream SMP is great. The problem is how its being told here. I find that the Dream SMP is a good example for how bad it can be to tell a story. How easy is it to watch the Dream SMP enough to get what happening? It is easy as fuck to watch while its happening, but in post? Try to watch the story from drugvan to now, and tell me how many hours it will take. You have to pick a specific streamer to watch, this is a huge problem, because it biases the story. None of the streamers are reliable narrators, and legitimately i only know the story AT ALL because I watch channels like Angry Thomas, which tommyinnit and such say are plagarizing and "Taking viewers away". Which is true, but they're successful because unlike everyone else, they don't wait 5 months to post story videos. Sure, it's nice to have those long videos but they come so late nobody would care about them besides someone new to the story, and even then they wouldn't GET the story because the megavideos are violently late. It'd be better to upload highlights like the plagarizing channels do. And to upload full streams and mark them "Lore" or not Lore, so as to help people learn it. So many arcs occur at once, for example look at january. How many plotlines did we have at once? -Eggpire -Ranboo lives and has good times with Technoblade(On Hold but occuring) -Ranboo legitimately suffers from realizing he's been dream's TOOL. His plaything.(Semi paused, but still going) -Karl Timetravels(Still ongoing) -Tubbo has nukes to threaten dream if and when he is released or escapes. -Jackmanifold and Puffy want to assassinate Tommyinnit for revenge -Niki is an anarchist -Technoblade starts the Syndacite(On Hold) -TommyInnit does a hotel -Fundy "Insanity Arc"(On Hold/Cancelled) -Dream tries to Imprison Tommy and Kill Tubbo/Regain control(Ended, Dream is in prison) This is not all, but the ones i know of. ALL OF THEM ARE IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND THE CHARACTERS CURRENT POSITIONS. How the fuck do you read all of this without watching every POV? All of these are jsut the ones from january alone. I have tried to introduce people to the Dream SMP, only to be completely dead in my tracks every time, i can't explain all of the important story elements without explaining one POV or overexplaining to the point it becomes intimidating and overpressuring. The closest i can do is link them to a video that summarizes the important stuff, but its a fucking mess nomatter what i do. And not everyone can watch twitch streams(Myself included) for a variety of reasons or combination of reasons. The Dream SMP is very difficult to watch. It is told in a very very bad method. But this can be solved by a neutral channel that covers every important event from every person. The role is being filled badly by channels like "Dream SMP Hangout" and "Angry Thomas". But it could be better. It could be not just offically sanctioned but be able to title clarify who's lore is relevant to what. It's something that would save this SMP's readability, because while you all can watch it just fine, most if not ALL of you have watched it from the earlier days, or just stuck to ONE or FEW perspectives, draining a LOT of time until you catch up. To summarize my opinion and point: The Dream SMP is a good STORY, but it has horrible TELING of the story. The themes and motives of individual nuances are great, but the amount of perspectives with unique arcs and storywriting is ruining the entire thing for any newcomers, exponential to how long its been. And this makes it harder to watch without overdedication to single POVs, missing every other's arcs and explanations.

I think one of the great things about the Dream SMP storytelling is that you can choose your own protagonist and antagonist, and what story you want to listen to. Someone once said that the Dream smp is so good, because everyone has a unique perspective. There are no real “bad guys” (except in the case of Shlatt and Dream at times) but in the cases of characters like Wilbur, Techno, Tommy, Nikki, Quackity. They all have motivations and desires that are justified by their own experiences, but are at the same time in opposition to one another.
@i_dont_know_who_i_am693 жыл бұрын
an interesting point that could be made is that both of the obvious "bad guys" (schlatt and Dream) are the only two major characters who don't stream the SMP, meaning that we don't see their perspectives. all the other antagonists (who aren't really villainous), Techno and Wilbur, both stream so we still see their point of views. Even with Dream and Schlatt. At some point they rlly weren’t the villains. I mean this whole thing started because someone went against Dream’s rules to grief others, plus a nation that he isn’t allowed to watch over could be a recipe for disaster (especially with Tommy being part of that government...which it was). But yeah, he started to become obsessive and controlling and apathetic to everyone but his own motives which is wrong. Which in some way also shows what ambition can do to someone. Relatable. As for Schlatt. I look back to his ruling and think to myself “what evil did he actually do though..?” I mean he got rid of some of our fav characters. (Tommy and Wilbur), treated wholesome characters unfairly (Niki, Quackity, Tubbo), and used others (Techno). But ironically, that’s no different from any other person you’ll be rooting for. Whether it be Dream, or Wilbur and Tommy. They’ve all done questionably moral things. In fact under his government, games, activities, new buildings, expansion, and sm more happened. Other than him being a drunk strange dickhead to people, nothing was downright cruel. And of youre thinking if the Tubbo’s execution, believe me, I’m not happy about that too, but it wasn’t for no reason? Tubbo was a double agent. Again, motive.

One of the big reasons why I really like the Dream Smp, is that you can watch different povs. There are main plots, side plots and you can truly understand how different characters think. For an example, during the red festival, you can watch Tubbo's point of view where he dies or Tommy's who watches from a rooftop, or Techno's who kills Tubbo, or even Quackity who watches right next to the action! How many shows have you seen that show multiple perspectives like that? It's simply amazing

A good topic I would love to see a video on is the connection of enemies and how they reflect in character deaths. What I mean by this is that almost every person that has been killed two or more times was killed by the same person. Here’s a list of character deaths so you can see what I mean: -Two Lives- Karl Jacobs: - Sacrificed life in terrorist attack against Greater Dream SMP [GeorgeNotFound] Fundy: - Died in the Final Control Room in the L'Manberg Revolution [GeorgeNotFound] -One Life- Quackity* - Red Festival Massacre [Technoblade] - Duel [Technoblade] Tubbo - The Final Control Room ambush [Sapnap] - Red Festival execution on Schlatt’s orders [Technoblade] Tommy* - Died in the Final Control Room in the L'Manberg Revolution [Dream] - Final duel in The War for L'Manbergian Independence [Dream] Dream* - Killed x2 in the Finale Confrontation [Tommy] - Dead- Wilbur* - Died in the Final Control Room in the L'Manberg Revolution [Punz] - Killed on Schlatt's orders on the day of the Election [Punz] - Killed by Philza on his own request Schlatt: - Red Festival Massacre [Technoblade] - Killed while being betrayed [Quackity] - Heart Attack during Manburg vs. Pogtopia war Mexican Dream* - Killed by a zombie while saving Mamacita - Took a bullet for Juan Mendez [Dream] - Killed in Logsteadshire because he was getting too close to Tommy [Dream] * Killed by the same person twice. -Interesting data- Dream and Techno are tied for highest kill count. All dead people have had one unique canon death cause. Only Dream, Tommy and Quackity have both been killed and a killer. Once George kills someone, they don’t get killed again. Most of the people who are killed by the same person twice have a hatred for that person, with the exception of dead people. No dead person has taken a life. Punz has only ever killed on others’ orders. Wilbur has only ever lost a life to someone who was told to kill him.

@sololad24233 жыл бұрын
I've thought the same thing. Fundy thinks it's a Dreamon that made the egg/is the egg and I think dream had actually been taken over by a Dreamon - though I am unsure about that due to the fact that I wasn't watching during that time. If Fundy is right about the egg, then it is possible that the Dreamon is the egg or controlling the egg been controlling Dream this whole time.

In terms of the power of the internet, i think dsmp not only highlights the streamers who stream on it, but also an entire community of people has been able to showcase their talents by contributing to the fanart, fanfiction, analysis videos, compliation and recap channels, memes. The streaming story telling medium reminds me a lot of being at a really good dnd table (or any other rpg game). You typically have a head story teller, such as the DM, who might be akin to the show runner on a TV show, but all the players have control over their own characters and depending on the relationship you have with the DM and the culture you build at the table, might take the lead on certain stories (or back stories) like a writers room, and that collaborative story telling leads to incredible highs and (honestly kind of stupid but very lovable) lows.

Hey ! I think I hadn't seen your video yet but I wrote an essay on the DSMP and we got such a similar point of view ! I find it fascinating how the DSMP offers a new way of telling a story (or offered, because with time it became a more "classical", episode-based story telling, with Quackity and others releasing pre-recorded videos that are better "quality" but lose the spontaneity and orginality it had). I didn't take a writer point of view but I'm trying to analyze what is so new about it, and how it can impact the way we define fiction. We got to the same conclusion though ! "Structure and Improv" really echoed with me. (sorry if my English isn't perfect, it's not my first language)

You forgot the fact that Tommy is mostly doing all the stuff he does because he wants the discs back, not for freedom or whatever you where talking about, he wants the Discs back (Which he now has) and for his Friends in (Former) L'manburg to be safe. But Technoblade is the one who wants freedom and revenge, for what tommy and l'manburg did to him, they used him as a tool and took all of his stuff to stop one Evil ruler, and re-placed it with another.

I feel that if you made a video about Ranboo, because of his odd character and actions. I think he is a very good character, but needs to be theorized about more.

Before you read this comment I have video idea, that I personally explain within this comment, is that the dream smp is story with many protagonist, not just one. I never been in the pov of tommy. I've shifted from wilbur then to techno, philza, and ranboo. To me tommy was never the protagonist but wilbur, Techno, Philza, And Ranboo were the protagonist
