Yes. That team lost Horace grant sho provided that physical presence. They didn’t fill that void until they get Rodman a couple years later and that was the missing link. Hakeem and the rockets also went 6-1 against the bulls over the 3 years that Chicago 3 peated the first time. Sure it’s just regular season but Hakeem would have dominated that bulls team in a way no player had ever done before.

Rockets had the type of team to beat the bulls. Vernon Maxwell gave Jordan fits not to mention Hakeem would feast and Phil Jackson hated to double team. I heard Kenny Smith say the rockets were 6-1 against the bulls 91-93. That's pretty crazy...I'm not saying rockets all day but I think it's an even playing field. I like the Horace argument also

Objectively speaking this 96 team could possible beat the 92 team based on defense. Payton was DPOY, Hakeem one of the greatest shot blockers, and young agile Prime Shaq. The 92 team had Bird with back issues, Magic coming back from rust, and a Christian laettner. The reason why 92 team is better to most people is because of one man, arguably the GOAT. Other than that, 96 team had almost everyone in their primes

Fun fact: Before 1984 Draft the Rockets had an offer to send Ralph Sampson the Trailblazers for the #2 pick AND Clyde Drexler. If the Rockets had taken that offer, they could have picked Olajuwon and Jordan as the #1 and #2 picks that year, plus Olajuwon's HOF college teammate (who he eventually won a ring with).

@@JonSmith-hk1bq That would’ve been an amazing team & I’ve heard this story before. I would put Pippen & Drexler on even par or equals so to speak. So it’d be about like envisioning the late 80s early 90s bulls with Olajuwon added to the roster but with of course Rockets on their jerseys. Of course Olajuwon & Jordan won 8 championships straight amongst them so it wouldn’t be a far stretch to imagine they’d win 8 titles if that scenario had happened.
@JonSmith-hk1bq
@JonSmith-hk1bq 2 жыл бұрын
@@averydaymond1560 Not just 8 championships, 8 championships in a row. And Olajuwon even managed to get past the 80s Lakers once. We are contemplating an era of dominance on par with the Celtics in the Russell-era, yes. I'd disagree about Drexler and Pippen being on par though. I'd much rather have Pippen both in general and as a fit with that Rockets team. Drexler was basically a less-dominant (but still HOF) version of Jordan's game after all.

@@lrod8692 come on now. The 1990 16 had no weak links at all unlike the 1992 team with Larry Bird in his injured back and Christian Laettner. Three-headed monster at Center that was Unstoppable defense and offense. And then you had Scottie Pippen Gary Payton and Penny Hardaway shutting down the defense. On top of that you had Charles Barkley still dominating and leading the roster and scores. Then on top of that you had the likes of Scottie Pippen Reggie Miller a little bit of John Stockton and Penny Hardaway tearing up the three pointers. And then on top of that on the second string alone whenever you had Karl Malone and John Stockton they was destroying teams with their combo one to attack alone. They didn't lose not one game. Not even the scrimmage. In the blowout range against their opponents were bigger than the 1992 team even Michael Jordan on the 1992 team who was at its peak still wasn't the leader in scores. But the chemistry that he demonstrated on that team is what helped his team elevate. Now the only way that that you can say that the 1992 team was better was only in total career achievements. Because in performance-wise the 1996 team edges the 1992 team just by few notches. So not only did the 1996 have no weak links the 1990 16 was Stronger and overall offense and defense.

Dream team 2 wasn't in 1996, Dream team 2 was the team that existed at the 1994 World Cup. The Dream Team II moniker belongs to the 1994 FIBA Men's Team, even though the media had played up the title to this Olympic squad

Thanks for pointing this out. Dream Team 2 was the marketed name for the ‘94 squad and is likely the team Shaq is referring to. The 1996 team was labeled “Dream Team 3.” Surprised more people can’t remember this.

This team was quicker and more athletic then the original dream team. I think dream team II would win a 7 game series but it would be an amazing series

It’s hard to have this debate whenever you have 5 of the original dream team members that played on the 96 Olympic team.

Not really. it's envisioning an older version of that player matched up against the younger version of that player...=) Recall the great Nike commercial of young MJ vs. old MJ?! =)

Good points regarding both teams, interesting point regarding the 2 defensive stars, Scottie & Payton, Patrick Ewing was no slouch either plus he has played well against Shaq & Olajuwan and the other center was Robinson, who on the '96 team as well. Both teams featured 5 of the same players, so, it's a very tough call. I agree '96 was probably deeper because that team had no players suffering from injury or a college player BUT Jordan is the ultimate equalizer! LOL Nice debate that could go on foreever. Continued success ; GOD BLess!

Arguably, more of the '96 squad had more players in their prime than the original Dream Team, which is the most accomplished squad ever. First off, Stockton, Pippen, Malone, Barkley, and Robinson were arguably similar between those 4 years (if perhaps a bit more accomplished; Malone still not yet at career peak while Robinson and Pippen were coming off of their best seasons). The roster differences are: MJ/Mullin/Clyde/Magic/Bird - Richmond/Reggie/Payton/Hardaway/Hill Ewing/Laettner - Shaq/Dream While the '92 back court's healthy 4 could outplay the '96 team's 5 in-prime players, Hakeem and Shaq would have been too tough for even 3 Ewing's to handle. This would be the one spot where the '96 team would thoroughly destroy the Redeem Team, which was really thin in its front court with only Dwight, Bosh, and Boozer. I would never count out an MJ-led team, but the '96 team would likely push '92 to all 7 games in a best of 7 series with a strong chance to win the deciding game 7.
