It's prog, but not for the sake of wanking or showing off. It's prog in that it uses interesting time sigs, and an unusual song structure to tell a story. Also a lot of interesting instrumental techniques on this song, and a fusion of a lot of different styles. Still one of DT's best songs.

LaBrie has his moments... due to his injury, around the mid and late 90s some songs sound better (Metropolis 2 in New York is one of their best concerts, if not the best) and other worse than the studio versions, while at their beginning, he was simply perfect. Listen the Marquee live and it will fucking blow your mind. I think what makes LaBrie belong in DT is the fact that he always sings like it's the last show of his life.

I just wish he was as good these days as he was then. I think he sabatoged himself by singing incredibly difficult melodies when he could in his youth, and now that he’s older he simply doesn’t have the physiology to keep up with the songs he recorded.

Sundance 1992, Toronto 1993, Milwaukee 1993 rank as a few of the top best LaBrie performances, you can see some of them here on YT. James' best I've seen I was luckily at the show. October Austin TX 2012. He far surpassed my expectations that night like on the Score DVD.

I think he was still recovering from his injury at the time, and unable to sing any higher without really straining his voice or cracking it... He eventually adapted to a new way of singing.

VerdiKtagrad maybe song quality is "worse" but the band is in no way worse. Myung, Petrucci and Rudess can still play like they could in the early 2000s. As for Mangini, I don't really mind him and it's very subjective so I won't delve deeper into that.

Lástima la voz de James, escuchar su voz en la versión del `93 en vivo y escuchar ésta, es como si hubieran cambiado de cantante. No se si habrá sufrido una ruptura de las cuerdas vocales o algo por el estilo, pero es frustrante escuchar como no puede llegar a las notas que hacia antes, y me imagino cómo se debe sentir él. A pesar de eso, es un tema impresionante tanto desde la letra (si no me equivoco compuesta por John Myung) y el excelentísimo nivel de música.

De hecho, James sufrió una ruptura. Por ahí de 1995/96, no recuerdo muy bien, en un viaje a cuba se intoxicó con algún platillo que comió (Camarones si no me equivoco) y eso le rompió las cuerdas vocales, arruinando su voz. Aún así, siguió y hoy ha mejorado bastante la voz. Claro, no tendrá la misma que en la época del '93, pero entre 2004 y 2006 recuperó esa gloriosa voz.

Score is awesome, but I like Scenes from New York better. It's just my opinion, of course. My problem with Score is that I feel they didn't do a very good selection of songs, I mean... Innocence faded? Spirits Carries on? Vacant?... seriously? Is that the best they could come up with? Scenes from new york has no weak point, it's epic to the end.

well, spirit carries on definitely could have been replaced with something different as well. innocence faded definitely was chosen for the "condescending... NOT (F# on the not) intending to..." bit, to show the high note in this song, so I think. Yes, I agree with the response from MaintainTheFrogsBite on how the tone overall from Score was better, and James still didn't fully "recover" from his vocal injury in Scenes from New York. Every show in DT has its ups and downs Both had their moments

Omar Beydoun well the parts on this song weren't written by Jordan, so I see why someone could say that he's got no soul, because I don't think you can put more soul into an already soulful performance. That said, I really enjoy Jordan's parts in the albums with him on keys
