@@williamf.buckleymusic666 Not shocking at all. James hasn't been sounding good since 2017 (he couldn't even hold a tune to their LATEST song Untethered Angel back in 2019). I'm more surprised at the fact that they didn't downtune their classic songs to make James a bit more comfortable. They used to do it during Mangini era, with minimal success. Maybe that's why they don't bother doing it this time, lol.

One horrific bout of food poisoning and violently vomiting for hours caused irrevocable damage (especially because this occurred in 1994 and he couldn't take the six months medical leave because DT was scheduled to tour less than two weeks later) that's a very tough moment in the budding career and at a pinnacle moment of a singer and the band. I can't sing, but one would think that despite his efforts over the years and belting out amazing songs, that there would be in 2024, 30 years later information / technology that's developed to perhaps help build back up or repair what he once had, idk... it's too bad. I'm sure if there was, he'd be doing something about it more than tea and vocal warmups. He'd be a great candidate for educational vocal analysis / go through the tests with "the charismatic voice". Their prior interview should just be step one. It'd be interesting to see and hear explanations as to how the damage occurred and why only immediate rest was the "forever" cure. I saw DT almost 20 years ago, he sounded amazing! Age plays a factor too.

Do you remember the DT passionate search for a new drummer on YT? It was so demanding and ruthless! Every video, discussion-absolutely everything-had to be flawless, because fans expect nothing less than perfection, which DT is known for. But when I listen to James now, I have to admit, it just doesn’t fit anymore. This isn’t about blaming anyone; it’s simply a fact that the material is incredibly demanding to sing. Wow - Portnoy looks like he needs an entire 18-wheeler just to cart his enormous kit around. James sounds great in the lower registers but that bout of food poisoning shredded his upper range - have they considered dropping the pitch to accommodate him? It's wild to hear the original pitch in 2024 but that's gotta hurt. And at certain points it almost seemed like he wasn't able to hear himself which is the worst thing about being in a band on stage - early days in the tour though - we'll see how it goes.
