One of the most creative drummers in the world rhythmically, you just have to break down the outro section to see that there are so many layers of the right sound being correct, it just fits (at 12:56)! Many drummers may be better technically but none are better when it comes to writing what drum sounds are best for the song at hand. Makes it very interesting to the listener!

+Jet Anderson I agree completely. The Mangini vs Portnoy debate is always about the wrong thing. Portnoy arranged the songs with JP. Now JP arranges them by himself. You can hear the difference in the last 3 albums.

Fun Fact: The weekend before entering the studio to start work on Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, John Petrucci and Portnoy saw Pantera perform at the Hammerstein Ballroom, New York City. This provided a great influence on the band. Portnoy described this particular track Glass Prison as musically "this total Pantera-meets-Megadeth, relentless ball of energy."

Mike Portnoy, Master Drummer! The closing parts of this song is extremely complicated and shows that even the great ones also do make mistakes, though barely noticeable! Towards the end, at 12:19 to 12:23, he fumbles through that rather simple fill (for him, of course) but still manages to get through it somehow and keep the time and the beat! And at 12:26, he gives the camera a look like 'Phew, that was a close one!' Really funny but absolutely professional! Being Human, the great Mike Portnoy!

How Petrucci could let this man go is beyond me.
@Kevinacharles7 жыл бұрын
Working Man Portnoy was the one who wanted to take a break from the band. Petrucci and the rest of the band respected the fans too much to agree to his demands. It was Portnoy's own fault he is out of the band. Mangini has proven an excellent replacement for the extremely big shoes that needed filling.
@Steven-xd5kn7 жыл бұрын
Who is at fault is questionable. The fact is Petrucci gave the order to let him go. These guys have been musical friends and band mates for a very long time. How one can let such an accomplished drummer go who more than helped make Dream Theater who they are go so easily is a bit unusual don't you think?. They all have been very busy with their own projects. Its not like Portnoy was the only one. Couldn't something have been worked out? As far as Mangini ... Im sure hes a great guy, Have nothing against him but HARDLY the replacement for Mike Portnoy. It is simply not Dream Theater any more sry.

Around this years he needed lubrication on his hands for grip (they got super dry). He then changed his sticks to having grip tape even his signature sticks. Little mistake @12:21 but nothing major. But seeing DT after Mangini (playing with a click) you can hear how the band was always trying to hold back the tempo but Portnoy was always going forward. You can see DT videos from like 2003 until he left that there was always a little fight between them on songs with the tempo.

Honestly, after Portnoy left DT, the atmosphere of DT had changed a lot. Portnoy's style is more melodic and has groove. Portnoy Era esp. 1999-2009 was so Proggy and badass, the DT period I love the most, Drums are real. While the current DT is less for me since 2013 when Drums are worse than Images and Words. Although I also love Mangini. Mangini depends on speed but Portnoy depends on melodies.

I watched some live shows with Mangini and they were boring. Portnoy plays like a drumming frontman. Mangini was like the background drummer. Certainly had 0 showmanship. Was too concerned with being so technically precise that the music lost its feeling... a feeling only Portnoy can give their songs. Will be interesting to hear him play some of the Mangini years songs and his take on them....

I don’t know if being a metronome technically is the real deal of the best drummer I really don’t know. But I know one thing for sure, Portnoy is musically unreachable for Mangini and many others. Since he left DT they didn’t have created no more epic song just commercial music ,because felt organic and catchy rhythm. Sadly l will never hear beautiful music from DT again and same thing for the old songs in live shows. Fortunately I got the old records back in the days when they were inspired, damned and awesomely progressive.
