Dream Theater began their mammoth "A Dramatic Tour Of Events" world trek in July 2011 with the final leg in South America taking place in August 2012. I just have to say, the drums on the new albums are great. I just don't know why people hate on Mangini, he is pretty damn good. OfC I like Portnoy more myself, but I have nothing to hate about Mangini.

Exactly, there's always a group of people who bitches about change. The replacement can rock even better than Portnoy and still, die hard fans of Portnoy would take trash. To me they're stupid. Just cuz we like Mangini doesn't mean we don't like Portnoy. I love Portnoy. Mangini is filling his shoes pretty well though. Just sayin....

Mangini is all class and he's a talented drummer. Portnoy was just a punk and I'm glad he's gone from DT. Also, he couldn't sing worth a crap. And he ALWAYS tried to sing backup vocals on live performances and he was terribly out of tune.

absolutely. i always get skeptical whenever a band who has been around for a very long time puts out a new record cuz im always questioning "hows the vocals gonna be?" or "are these guys really gonna be able to do something innovative here?" i get blown away when these artists and bands who have been around for 25-30-40 years put out records and theyre the best work theyve done. i didnt think that at first with the new self titled dream theater record. i literally my first impression of that album was "damnit.....its a dramatic turn of events tuned way low" but after several listens it is hands down my fav DT record

Ben Gombl I dunno what you mean, I saw them last year after they took a year long hiatus and he sounded PHENOMENAL! Sure, he’s had his bad moments but WHO HASN’T? I’m a tenor singer myself and I prefer recording in the studio, I have my good and bad moments too. Hell, last time I saw Judas Priest, Rob Halford sounded amazing but had some pretty spotty moments. But good lord, I’d like to see half of these negative Nancys singing at least 1% of the shit LaBrie and Halford have to sing. Two of my favorite singers!

Mike Mangini is an absolute monster behind the drums. In no way could you ever compare and determine who is better between Portnoy and Mangini. However, watching this video my heart is with Portnoy. It's so hard to see someone else behind the kit and Portnoy seemed to bring a lot more energy than Mangini. Maybe it's just this particular performance but I'd rather see Portnoy.
@NerismaStudios
@NerismaStudios 10 жыл бұрын
The thing with Mangini is that it's always the music first, and how can he best serve the music (believe it or not, for how massive his kit is, every single piece is it was strictly chosen for a musical purpose). Showmanship easily takes a back-seat with Mangini (plus, he was classically trained: showing off is not in that world at all). Portnoy is in no way comparable to Mangini when it comes to who is a more developed and diverse drummer, musically. But you are right: what Portnoy lacks in technical prowess, he makes up for in showmanship. I do think it's good that DT has Mangini as their drummer now (even though I think it should have been Marco Minnemann), but Portnoy will always be known for DT.
@MSPD135
@MSPD135 10 жыл бұрын
Michael Scott I agree. Mangini is a very precise drummer. Every piece on his kit is strategically placed. Minnemann is a great drummer as well and that was my favorite pick out of the drummers that tried out. DT lacks so much in there live performance but makes up for it musically. Being a musician for 14 years their pieces are extremely difficult to UNDERSTAND. It's not so much hard to play but understanding musically what's going on is the key. Again, when watching DT live I'd rather see Portnoy just because of the live performance aspect of it. They both produce great records.
@NerismaStudios
@NerismaStudios 10 жыл бұрын
MSPD135 And truly, to be able to play any music well, it takes understanding what's going on to portray it the best, to serve the music justice. Mangini knew that the best going into the audition. Minnemann has the best improvisational ear (seriously, no one else did what he did on the third part of the audition, where he just listened to the riff and then played a groove right back). Minnemann is really the perfect fit for DT: he has both the technical prowess and the shownamship. But then again, he is not Mike Portnoy.

... I think the #1 reason that Portnoy is a major turn-off for me, and why, though he was the spirit of Dream Theater, he wasn't the best drummer musically, can be heard on the track "Wither." A beautiful, powerful ballad... and Portnoy just kills the entire vibe with too much... Yes, he can do all that stuff, but he proved himself as a drummer, but not as a musician, on that track. That's why I'm not as into Portnoy as I am Minnemann or Mangini. But Portnoy is still great.
