+Nintenke No, a nice strong chorus benefits any song of any genre. It is what a song amounts to and is a core of a musical composition. Pop uses choruses because it's easy, bands like Dream Theater do it because that is what benefits the song the most.

after the tenth time listening to it, I can honestly say this is one of the best DT songs I've ever heard. we all have are preferences but this one is a unique and stands out to me. i mean they can do pretty much more in 4 minutes than any other band can in the entire career. The solo was miraculous and I love how it transitions from the backup choir to that. I cried the first time I heard it. True story. Music is back.

I really like this sound, probably because prog rock from the 1980s used to be my staple diet of music. It feels like listening to music from both the 1980s and 1990s while still sounding unmistakenly like Dream Theater. I can't really wish for more. Rock On! :-)

I see that these "ROBOTIC" words are all over the place... This is precision you guys, the concept of having the futuristic feel is absolutely prominent and the drums are enforcing and accentuating each note. Personally speaking, well done Mr. Mangini, finally you gave Dream Theater more than just a drummer replacement. You are a genius and teleported the band to another sound dimension which to many and myself find it more mature, elaborate and detailed.

+Giuseppe Passoni "futuristic" feel... music made by robots? That is one of the main themes of this new album. In whatever time the story takes place, music is made by machines, not humans, so perhaps they were trying to reflect that in this song? Too early to tell.

So...seriously people? Half the comments here are nit picking the tonality of the drums, and already comparing it to past albums. From 1 song...out for 1 day...and we already compare it to entire past albums? Sorry, thats just stupid. You annoying "fans" are completely missing the point of the awesomeness of Dream Theater and you need to just stop it. I've been a fan of DT since 1993 and I've yet to hear anything that sucks. Are some better than others?...of course, but suck?....I think not. You know what the biggest problem with DT fans is? We're spoiled rotten. Plain and simple. We live in a time of such amazing musicianship that we can't see musical beauty for what it is. Listen again and be reminded how amazing these guys are. Then ask yourself; Can I imagine/create this song like they did? Can I arange everything as good as they do? Can I play as well as they do? Can I do better? If the answer to any of those is no.....then shut up.

No one SHOULD be able to imagine a song better than DT, make better drum tracks or outperform them. Unfortunately, it seems like that has beside possible since the three last albums. Are you sure you're not in denial about the condition of DT? Are you sure you're not just enabling Dream Theater to more and more turn into what they've become and are becoming? Don't be an enabler. What amazes me about this track is that I can hear elements from every stage of their career and from every album. I am super excited about this album. I'm even more amazed they managed to write a song under 5 minutes. Isn't that in and of itself cause for celebration and rejoicing? Those who scoff at the snare sound, I like it better than on Dream Theater. We have to remember Richard Chycki (Rush) is a mixer/engineer here. This obviously is the sound they like for Mangini's snare. I think it sounds meaty. It's not as dark and wet as it was on Dream Theater. Personally, I prefer a tighter, crackier snare. But that's just me.

First listening... uhm... some Images and Words vibes and some Awake, but.. Second to fifth listening... ok guys, it's good, prog vibes, not too heavy but really solid and structured with a nice melody.. sixth to tenth listening.. Petrucci and Rudess seem better than ever in the common parts, drums are less thrashing than the last album(s).. Then I read the interview to John.. damn, Campbell? Wow, sounds.. great. Visual art, robust plot, characters not just childish bullshit but sci-fi oriented.. It took more than one year just to create the storyline.. Eleventh to twentieth listening... Can't wait for the orchestral parts, the choirs, the show. In the end, my fears of an ambitious bag of shit have been washed away. Are they back? No, they just mad one step forward and... it will be ASTONISHING

+metfan4l wtf are you talking about, LaBrie can do that with his voice, not autotune at all, I've seen him doing it live, when he pushes himself away from the mic, that sort of "effect" comes up. But Jesus how picky you've got to be to notice something so insignificant and small overrall, Just enjoy the music

The sad thing about it is that we'll never hear those wonderful drum lines with those incredible hit-hat works that only Mike Portnoy could imagine for dream theater's song anymore. I think its the most beautiful thing I miss in the dream theater's last albums. This machine drum sound is secundary for me.

So what exactly is the main issue with the sound of the drums? Snare too dry? Kick too thick and punchy? I kind of want to know what people are hung up about here cause now I'm curious.

I´m sorry guys but i think that Portnoy's idea, before he leaves the band, about to take a little rest for stimulate the creativity again, was perfect. It's a shame that idea wasn't accepted by the others, in my opinion.

I've been listening to DT around 23 years and making music 20 years. It's always nice to hear new musical compositions from these guys that I respect a lot. However, I have to say that mixing is not the way it should be for this kind of music. There's not enough dynamics and on this track drums are not mixed right (too loud snare and too weak cymbals). Guitar solo doesn't stand out as it should, bass sounds weird and weak etc. Another thing that I don't realise about drums here is that while Mangini's playing in "real life" is super dynamic then why on earth kill all that in mixing by compressing the drum sound this much so that every hit sounds exactly the same? It's really sad that things are spoiled in mixing if you think how much effort these guys put into their music. This would be really Astonishing music to listen to if it would be mixed properly!

+solt410 Actually they did... A Dramatic Turn of Events was Images and Words 2010 edition... And Outcry was the new Metropolis, at least from the song structure point of view. Like Far from Heaven + Breaking All Illusions was Wait for sleep + Learning to Live etc etc... If you also want a song as influencial as Metropolis, tough luck. That is why they are called MASTERPIECES !

It's not everything in the production guys, it's mostly the way Mangini drums. His style of playing is very technical, constantly following other instruments, failing to create it's own atmosphere... HE IS a drum machine! Im not saying he's a bad drummer, he totally masters the technical part of drumming. He's perfect for a studio musician. Since he joined Dream Theater, I really miss something in their new songs.
