Its called a wah-wah pedal. Artist like Petrucci have a custom one that can be really badass. And as Leon mentioned, Mr Wizard is also there. But the guitar with the wah-wah is in the front of the mix.

There's only one Guitar, and John Petrucci plays it. The other you heard was Jordan Rudess, the Keyboard player. Those solos at the end were John and Jordan dueling. It doesn't get any better than this.

The reason it sounded like more than one song is because this song depicts the first few steps from the twelve steps of recovery, the subsequent albums had additional songs going through the rest of the steps

My friend if u stick with dream theater you will b entering a world of music u never ever imagined existed, this band consists of 4 of the sickest musicians the world has to offer, some of those quitar solos are keyboard solos, watch a live video of them, try the live version of the shattered fortress that is all im going to say, whatever music you listened to, will not prepare you for dream theater

Disc 2 of this album is a 40 minute mega epic about 6 people with mental illnesses. Thus, 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence.

Many DT songs have orchestral sections/accompaniment, and there are great live recordings of them playing with orchestras - someone else mentioned "Score", with some masterpieces like "Octavarium" or "Sacrificed Sons", or the "Breaking the Fourth Wall" concert at the Boston Opera House where they play with an orchestra and a choir (which play a prominent role in another masterpiece, "Illumination Theory", although all the songs from that concert are amazing). Watching Dream Theater live (I've seen them about a dozen times, including their last visit to Barcelona on Jan. 20th this year) is an awesome experience - makes you wonder how the hell they can do what they do in the studio with such intricacy and accuracy, and do it all live to boot...Oh, and yeah others have already told you this, John Petrucci (guitar) and Jordan Rudess (keyboard) alternate solo sections in this song (and many other ones), so that "weird sound" you hear at times is a keyboard, not a guitar.

The world of Dream Theater is totally worth getting into! 14 studio records, several live and they finally won the grammy last year. This song is part of the 12 step suite. The drummers songs about his dealing with his alcoholism. Which he beat. The songs are on different records. All their records are different. Scenes from a Memory is my favorite. You must go see them live. John Petrucci's guitar playing and Jordan Rudess' keyboards will melt your face.

This is what prog/prog metal music is all about. It lacks this so called traditional song structures so it can sometime be difficult to put your finger on where the chorus is. It´s more like Jazz for example, that mixes many parts together and sometimes when writing they go from one pt. to the next through improvisation. In this song it´s actually connected to 4 other songs in a so called 12 step (AA) saga which touches on the drummer´s (now former) experience with alcoholism and drug abuse. This song is the first of 5 and goes through the first 3 steps which are: I. Reflection, II. Restoration and "III. Revelation. If you´d listen to the other 4 songs you could actually hear them reprising/revisiting some parts of the songs again. And since you mentioned that they would kill it with an orchestra I´m happy to tell you that they´ve actually had concerts with a symphony orchestra or at least what is called a chamber orchestra. In 2006 for example they did a concert with a full symphony orchestra for their 20th anniversary 😄

Good song to start out with, the first song I heard was. "Pull me Under" in the early 1990's and I've been hooked on them since to this very day! One of the best bands in the world in my honest opinion!

This is Dream Theater. Prog Metal at its finest. Twists and turns and surprises and heavy, riffy, atmospheric. They have recorded a couple live albums with an Orchestra. Score and Breaking the Fourth Wall. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is played live with an Orchestra. And its 40s minutes of awesome. Illumination Theory live, will blow your mind.

Two things. That instrument you can't understand is a keyboard and as you asked, you should go to six degrees of inner turbulence live on the 2006 score show. It will blow your mind.
