That guitar solo with the weird effect you hear is actually the legendary synth lead sound from Derek Sherinian. It’s a keyboard solo 🤘 Keep up the awesome reactions! Love them all!

Yes, it's a pitch wheel, or peddle these days, and is similar to the WAH WAH peddle used for guitars.

The 'heavily affected' guitar is Derek Sherinian's keyboard sound'

Woo! Knew you'd like the groove/less frantic aspect of DT. There's actually 2 keyboard solos in there but both of them kinda sound like a guitar because keyboardist Derek Sherinian was more influenced by guitar players like Yngwie Malmsteen and Eddie Van Halen than keyboardists. The man's solos were so good, they very often get mistaken for guitar if you don't know.

Check out Symphony X, “The Divine Wings Of Tragedy” and Fates Warning, “The Light And Shade Of Things”. Two of the other Prog Metal greats.

For me, FII is an excellent album. It was a step out of their usual expected gig, but not in the wrong way. Just because it was different, it wasn't well-accepted among fans when it came out. But it's growing to me very well as time goes by 😊 Especially when you look at what BS is being recorded these days.

Not heavily effected guitar, that is keyboard. Derek is famous for shredding on keys

I would recommend checking out the live version from Breaking The Fourth Wall. John Petrucci does a pretty spectacular intro in that particular performance. Also I'm still suggesting the band Fates Warning. Their song "Still Remains" is a great start. Kevin Moore, Dream Theater's original (and best IMO) keyboardist was featured on that Fates Warning album.

I suggest the Dream Theater songs "Outcry" and "Strange Deja Vu" if you haven't reacted to them yet
