I am 72 years old. I have been somewhat health conscious for the last 30+ years. Eating wise, I was probably eating 90% right. The other 10% had way too many bad carbs; pastries, cookies and ice cream were my weakness. It finally caught up with me with high blood sugar (272) and high blood pressure (178/99). It scared me and I went looking for answers and I redicovered you and your teaching. I am now on a keto diet and intermittent fasting. I won't go into the details but I am very serious. In the last two weeks I have my blood pressure in check, my blood sugar has dropped in half and continues to decline and I have lost at least 15 lbs. I have experienced some transition effects, but I am going to stick with it till I get my body in balance. Thank you for everything you do to help people change and to save peoles lives. I am six foot four, 220 lbs, strong and active with no other health issues. I avoid prescription drug and take good supplements.

I think the keto treats should be there for holidays and birthdays where we want to feel included - but definitely NOT for everyday eating - maybe 2-3 moments in an entire year. I will make a keto cake for my birthday and low carb stuffing for Thanksgiving, so that I don't feel tempted by my two favorite holiday treats. This is my mindset this time around with keto.

Watching this a year and a half after you posted it; thank you, Dr. Ekberg, for answering my unasked questions. I've been doing/eating clean keto for the past seven weeks, and it's for my health above all else, though I most certainly need to lose weight (and am successfully doing so). I have wondered for some days now what the differences were between clean keto and dirty keto, and kept finding such disparate information, I was only getting confused. Your explanation makes it very simple to understand, and now it's even easier for me to continue with clean keto (though it isn't perfect---I live where there are no health foods stores but one, and it's pretty much a joke---but is far better than the laxity of dirty keto).

I was sold on Keto for life when after doing it for 2 weeks my knee stopped... pretty much being worthless. I could dance again, I can jump, I can even run with my dog to help her lose weight. I would recommend going the full dive into Keto. I just don't see a reason for carbs. You can make muffins for a treat, you can get monk fruit sweetened syrup and make almond flour or coconut flour pancakes. Why do we need gluten, and stupid junk? Nothing is cheaper than fasting and Keto got me to fast easily as well. I probably only spend $110 a month on food for myself. Maybe $3 a day, and some days I just don't eat because I'm not hungry and there's no need to.

Bread and potatos are still hanging with me. I love avocado sandwiches on lowest added sugar bread that I can find.

If you have to "start" something again, that means it failed you. It means it doesn't work because the only sign of something being successful is long term sustainability. Keto fails when that is the standard for most human beings who try it, along with the inability to properly process normal carbohydrates after a period of time.

The other thing about keto that seems to be prevalent is the "ketofying" of food. Making say the desserts, etc. that got you fat but now ketofying them. Ketofied foods are fine occasionally or in the beginning as one transitions to a cleaner keto but to me just seems to be more of the same that made one unhealthy in the first place if all you are eating is ketofied food.
@james777ko25 жыл бұрын
If you make for instance a keto cheese cake and eating a slice is under your carb limit, it's perfectly healthy and perfectly keto. In fact, a slice of the cheese cake me and the wife make has perfect keto macros and I'll sometimes just have a piece for my lunch. What got me fat was eating excess carbs, eating properly "ketofied" food will not make you fat! I've lost 80 lbs in 8 months and reached my weight goal a couple weeks ago.
@drekberg5 жыл бұрын
I think that is perfectly fine at least during a transition. Just don't turn them into another food group. Focus mostly on whole quality food and make occasional treats.

I have been on keto for 4 years and going from 36 waistlines to 31. However, I was diagnosed with extremely high dyslipidemia and my triglycerides are still too high around 300. How would you suggest how I should handle this situation? Have I been doing something not perfect in these last few years? Look, I don't care about taste. Dirty usually means high Omega 6 to low Omega 3 ratio, that causes inflammation over time. When I was keto, i did the dirty part when I first started, but as time passed I educated myself and learned to read labels on the food I buy. Now as a carnivore shopping is really simple and doesn't take so much time. But since my birthday is coming at the end of this month I will do a dirty-keto cheat and bake some coconut flower pancakes and some peanut butter cookies :))

I’d rather don’t buy the latest pair of shoes and spend the money on good organic food. I think most of us, when we loose weight, it makes us feel good. And I just can imagine that feeling good because of whichever reason also does something positive to your body. Nevertheless I do believe in health being the main goal, so maybe we should look for some balance between both and look at it as a "win win" situation. At least that s how I look at it. Hi, Dr. Ekberg. Excellent explanation as always! I am curious about your opinion of natural nutrient-dense powders and supplements, like dried/powdered moringa oleifera, baobab, cactus (nopal), chlorella, spirulina, wheatgrass, ashwaghanda, maca, cacao, etc. I personally think they are highly nutritious, as well as some great alternatives to synthetic (multi)vitamins and minerals, although they could be considered pricy...do you think they're worth the investment?
@amrannoordin16445 жыл бұрын
I agree fully with your views here. However, sometimes (often?) people go dirty keto for economics reasons. For example, non - GMO, organic food, grass fed food etc can be expensive in some parts of the world. I am aware that in the long term the costs may be higher if we don't go clean keto. But for some (many?), the economic consideration is a more immediate problem. Yet, they need to get better because of some urgent medical problem. A balance needs to be struck for such people in the mean time while these are still real and pressing issues for them. Otherwise, it becomes too difficult or inaccessible for them and wouldn't even try keto.
@amrannoordin16445 жыл бұрын
While clean is better (and I am not arguing with that at all), we have to balance that with our own situation. I do a mix of both. I seldom eat extra virgin oils (olive or coconut or whatever). I don't look for non - GMO or look only for organic. I don't look for grass fed food too. I also eat canned food instead of fresh. I eat almost any greens. But I still managed to get not only my weight down but also go off my diabetes and cholesterol medicines. It's better than eating really junk food high in sugar or carbs. The economic reasons may not allow us to SUSTAIN clean keto.

I also imagine that air fried food. In that case a lot less oil cooking should be a good thing. Actually: I would cooking oil affect its nutrition factor? Also, dirty keto + fasting: would that have more health benefits considering the reduction of meals? I am thinking though that eating OMAD would make it much easier to eat keto since one has to prepare food only once.

Thank you Armando Miraglia. I use an air fryer for chicken wings on a regular basis, then I toss them in butter, hot sauce and lemon. Yum. You can cook in fat but it needs to be a good quality fat like butter, EVOO or coconut oil and the temperature needs to be appropriate for the type of fat. (no smoking) Dirty keto + IF is better than 6 dirty carb meals per day, but in the end you want to eat clean. Do the best you can.😄

I dislike the labels "Dirty" and "Clean" keto. These have only been invented over the last few years, primarily for marketing purposes IMO. All of these differences are thoroughly explained in comprehensive documents like "The Are and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living" book By Drs. Phinney and Volek. Unfortunately, the surge in popularity of the diet coupled with the apparent low desire to do much research before starting a diet has caused these differences to become more pronounced. I've simply resorted to calling the macronutrient understanding "Keto 101," Fat quality "Keto 201." and micronutrient content "Keto 301." Eventually, some may end up watching Dr. Rhonda Patrick, Dr. Dom D'Agostino, Dr. Peter Attia, and Dr. Chris Masterjohn for their Keto 801 courses.

Hello, I have 3 questions about keto where I have to help me find answers: Does vegetable oils like sunflower oil and proccessed chees like kiri kick us out of ketosis? (regardless it's bad effect on health) Some time polyols are counted in carbs and sometimes not, why and when do we count them? If the product contains sugar, oat, wheat, can we take it IF it is counted within the 5% carbs? If not, so how we can eat avocado, berries, vegetables, which have sugar inside? Thanks

The reason we can eat those lower carb items such as berries and avocado is because of the fiber contained.
@hassanayoub855 жыл бұрын
@@knottydizziedevil9425 then we should have to eat a meal with high fiber and 1tbsp jetchup which only have 1g net carb of sugar as the whole meal contains big number of fiber .

How about if you're eating towards the "Clean side", but its not the perfect clean - for example I eat bacon, but its not pasture raised pork, fresh eggs but they're not free-ranged.. But I've completely avoided things like shortening, margarine, aspartame already. Do you guys feel it's more towards the clean side as well? Or is regular bacon just as bad as the "dirty" stuff.

Another helpful video. There was one thing I noticed when I did dirty Keto and ran through a fast food joint for a burger and pulled off the bun. It wasn’t satisfying! I guess this whole time I was eating fast food, used to be daily, it was the bun that was filling me up? Another thing I noticed was how sweet foods were after I went on Keto! Seriously, who puts sugar in chili? Blah! Nowadays, fast food is persona non grata in my life since I’m really trying to control my blood sugars, and most of it messes it up to much. Although...I am happy to say that in a pinch, Popeyes chicken does NOT raise my blood sugar. ;)

The world isn't changing, America might be. Go in a UK supermarket and ask for keto products and you get a blank look. Go online to order something and it's twice the price of the same product in the US.

The If It Fits System!!! Exactly!!! I don't really think it has anything to do with the omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio although that may have a small part in it. it's specifically about low-carb products in general having ingredients in it that are not necessarily healthy like hydrogenated oils maltodextrin dextrose things of that nature omega-6 to Omega-3 ratio is important but that's not really where the term dirty keto came from, it came from people that we're still trying to do keto and make things fit but the products weren't necessarily clean keto products but they could still achieve the same macros.... for instance ranch dressing has maltodextrin in it for instance mayonnaise has canola oil and soy oil in it for instance the excessive types of artificial sweeteners and things of that nature the highly processed keto treats, it's more to do with the overall ingredient and not so much the ratios of omega's in my opinion. Although many of our keto products are high in omega 6 which is shown scientifically I feel we should focus more on that as well Nuts in general are super high in omega 6 but I even see keto docs recommending nuts and things but the omega ratios are terrible

It's nice to see nearly everything I'm doing now is in the clean list. I'm not a big sugar person but use Splenda when I do sweeten. How does that rate? I'm not a fan of Stevia, it has an aftertaste to me. I'm also in the process of eliminating soy oil from my diet altogether. It's in almost everything these days.
@james777ko25 жыл бұрын
Splenda is sucralose, which is "okay." However, in the powdered form they add things like dextrose and maltodextrin which are bad for you because they will spike your insulin levels. Look for splenda or sucralose in liquid form and there's usually no additives. Also, try stevia in liquid form as it may not have that aftertaste you don't like.

Splenda or sucralose is rat poison just like aspartame. It is a chloro-carbon, which is in the same family of chemicals as DDT. Not one patient ever has passed a muscle test on aspartame or sucralose. Try liquid stevia or a newer product called "justlikesugar"

what are your thoughts on using salt. I've had a mild heart attack several years ago and had a stent placed. My cardiologist recommended lowering salt intake. However, I hear from different doctors on youtube that we need salt. I'm confused
@james777ko25 жыл бұрын
We need the salt. I would suggest that you do some research about salt. Salt has a very small amount of affect on blood pressure, but not very significant. Also, I bet your taking a statin. Please research statin drugs. It's been recently discovered that big pharma cheated on their clinical trials prior to 2005. Also, the side affects are numerous. Satin drugs increase the chance of getting diabetes by 25%. And if someone has diabetes they have an increased 50% of having a heart attack. Do your own research and come to your own conclusions.

Salt binds water and can theoretically increase blood pressure, but only if your kidneys aren't working. A mechanism called pressure diuresis will reduce volume/pressure within minutes.

I've been eating 'dirty' Keto for a little over half a year. That is to say that I eat regular store bought, grain fed meat. It is NOT 'organic' or anything. I eat regular cheap eggs, the cheapest I can find. I buy the cheapest bulk cheese. I use the cheapest olive oil and butter on sale. My cup or two of veggies a day are almost always frozen veggies, from the lowest cost provider. I do not eat 'junk food', I can't afford it. I do use Stevia to take the edge off of coffee, but bought in bulk it is not expensive, given how long it will last. (The sugar bowl I filled with my $40., 8 ounce bag of powdered stevia looks to me to be as full as when I first filled it six months ago.) I had several health issues before I started eating my 'dirty' keto. Within one month, every last issue either completely vanished or was majorly mitigated. Bursitis pain, almost gone, down 90%. Knee pain, completely gone. Acid reflux (severe), completely gone. Acne skin rash, completely gone. Constant defecation and hemorrhoids, completely gone. Nerve damage symptoms, down 90%. Oh, and I've lost about a pound a week. Thirty pounds to go. Dirty Keto for life.
