@Plus Minus That is why I just keep it to myself. I used to eat rice and always wondered why I was always hungry. I told a former colleague of mine that many things we eat are empty calories. She lookee at me as if I were high. I started Keto in Nov 2018 and IF some time in 2019. I do IF now daily 20:4 and fast. I completed a 31-day water fast in Nov 28, 2019. Yesterday, I completed a 7-day water fast on 15 Jan 2020. It is very interesting. Funny thing is after the 31-day water fast. At times, the only craving I ever have is Cream of Rice. Interesting.

For those who are new to fasting, let me clarify one important point. Before you begin your first fast, it is wise to become FAT ADAPTED. Teach your body how to burn fat by MASTERING the ketogenic diet. If you are overweight, you probably have a lot of insulin in your blood, which PREVENTS you from burning your fat. You have to cut your carbs to 50 grams or less. No baked goods, grains, starches, or fruits. But you can eat meat, vegetables, and fats to fullness. At the beginning, eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but no snacks. Finish eating by 6 PM. Then follow the procedure Dr. Ekberg describes of narrowing your eating window day by day and eventually fasting for longer and longer periods. When you do eat, prioritize protein. It is filling, and is the only macronutrient you need during weight loss. Finally, and most IMPORTANTLY, replenish your ELECTROLYTES. To make your own electrolyte drink, add 1 teaspoon of potassium No Salt, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and ½ teaspoon of sea salt to two liters of water, and drink that throughout the days when you fast. If you get a HEADACHE or feel WEAK while fasting, drink your ELECTROLYTE beverage. I speak from personal experience, and hope this tip makes you successful in fasting for weight loss.

Hi Dr. Eckberg! I was diagnosed with type 2 more than 25 years ago and struggled with the recommended treatments with no success and as a result I was labeled a Non compliant patient. That title did more to make me rebel from the treatments than anything else. All of that got me painful neuropathy, heart failure and problems with my eyes. Fast forward to last September, I finally discovered doctors Boz, Berry and Fung and finally made the decision to turn my health around. I started a relatively strict Keto diet along with IF. I stopped taking any insulin and victoza. I soon got to where i was mostly OMAD and soon started losing weight. I have gone from a BMI of 29 to now less than 24. My last A1c was 6.6 from higher than 7. I've been listening your videos lately and am getting such good information to keep me going in my journey! Thanks for all that you are doing!

If there's anything I've learned through Dr. Ekberg aswell as Dr Berg, it's that the future of medicine is bright; not because there's a cure for everything on the horizon, but because there's a preventive measure for all disease ready for us right now. Insulin reduction seems to be again and again the key to allow our bodies to naturally take care of all its problems. This is truly amazing. Not unbelieveable at all, but truly amazing that platforms like youtube allow this invaluable wisdom to reach millions of people.

I've started eating my one meal per day during a period of 2 to 2.5 hrs (4:30 to 6:30) and that seems to work well for me for the time being. Also tweeting my fat intake, I think I was overdoing it with the heavy cream, so I reduced it by a lot. Dear Dr. Ekberg, In terms of your considerstions about how much fasting is good on high physical activity this might be interesting: I'm working as a piano mover (and moving means that I am carrying up to ten of these things across 15-20 floors each day!). After beeing a carb junkie my wohle life (of course, when I was a kid, I've been told to become one) spontaneously I did a two-week-fasting after a tooth surgery 15 years ago. Unfortunately I lost a lot of muscles back then, because I completely crashed my body down from 100 to zero, but nevertheless it changed my life: Not only did I stop smoking for the fasting period, but stayed a non-smoker afterwards. Since then I switched my training from only lifting heavy weights to running/stretching/functional Fitness and HIIT. Also did I change my nutritional habits (less junk & more whole food, less alcohol and so on). About two years ago I started with intermittent fasting and carb reduction. After seeing some of your videos I felt encouraged to do a longer fasting again, but this time I was prepared much better: For 6 weeks I abstained from alcohol & sugar, I expanded my fasting periods from 16:8 to 18, sometimes even 20 hours and I reduced carbs even a little more (although still beeing far away from a ketogenic diet). Then I went through 3 discharging days where I only ate very little and absolutely no carbs. After that started with the actual fasting where I only drank water for 5 days. I'd been quite afraid of my work shifts before, but although I had some really tough days with exhausting piano transports I did really well and felt strong throughout the whole fasting. On the weekend (I did my fasting from thursday to monday) I even went for two shorter hikes of 10-15 Kilometers each. Since then I decided not to eat any more throughout working and I'm doing much better with it, quite the contrary I'm even feeling stronger now! So, from my point of view, fasting is absolutely no problem on a physically active lifestyle (of course, you've to get adapted to it slowly!).

Fat is metabolized in the mitochondria by beta-Oxidation to Acetyl-CoA which goes into the citratcyclus. If there are more fatacids in the liver than it can use or store itself the liver produces ketones which are secreted into the blood. Ketones are an indicator for fat metabolism, but the body never could “run” just on ketones. Ketones are not “healthy” or better or worse than any other way in biochemie and as well metabolized to Acetyl-CoA => Citratcyclusas all glucose or aminoacids or fatacids.

I made a 7 day water fasting after a long period of bad-regular nutrition, and carbs everyday. It wasn't a pleasent experience. I'm sure that would be better on a previous keto or low carb diet. Thanks for your videos. Very clear accent! Greetings.

Is not better to eat a Mediterranean diet within a context of Intermittent Fasting! I do 18:6 or 19:5, four times a week, then 26 to 27 hrs once a week! The last two days of the week I attempt to eat between 70 to 80g protein within a context of Mediterranean eating style!

i dit long time fasting 2-4 weeks a couple time and now intermitting fasting and keto and had no problem with my period. I do now of partners who want to have children who do also a 3 weeks long fast, to help to become pregnant. (Just we start and end a long-term fast diffrent then u do in the US.) In Germany and Austria many Hospitals that specialise in pregnancy include this adwise and assist in fasting. But how the progesterone changes i dont now.

Daniel Shields , please just do water fast. What do you see the value of dry fast. On a water fast you will help excrete out waste product.

Daniel Shields , In the Jewish religion we end a fast with a small amount of juice. Otherwise eat lightly, until comfortable.

Combination. Stay IF, but rotate KETO, Mediteranian, and carnivore. Also rotate 2MOD with one 3MOD and one 1MOD, occassional OMODs. I haven't been brave enough to try pure fasting. In another video Dr. Sten talked about this variety so your body does not adapt to one method and start retaining fat. In one of Dr. Debbie Gillespie videos she talks that post menopausal needs more salads. I did better weight loss when I started IF Mediteranian, probably 100 or so carbs, some bread and potatoes than strict 20 carb KETO or carnivore. However, my labs and medication reduction have improved equally all 3 ways. But carnivore had, by far, the most digestive and regularity improvement than salads. I'm one year in and very happy. No hunger, no starvation, no deprivation, no KETO flu. Felt detoxification a couple of times (is that the KETO flu?).

I lost 100 pounds mostly with extended fasting of two-to-three weeks every quarter year, with keto in between. I kept it off, and would rate it as highly successful. It was an aggressive plan, but this was on the heels of being diagnosed type 2 diabetic. I never did lose any weight doing keto, but it allows me to keep the benefits, including blood sugar, weight loss and lower inflammation. I am still trimming, but not really "losing" much anymore, and frankly, I'm not interested in burning protein, so I only fast for a few days at a time, on occasion, in addition to time-restricted eating. I recently "cheated" and had a big bowl of Vietnamese beef noodle soup. I thought I was going to pay, big time, but my blood sugar topped out at 120 for a few hours, so I seem to have a healthy metabolism again. Of course, that doesn't mean I'm going back to eating poorly.

I love your emphasis on self-experimentation and listening to your body. I only weigh 100 lbs, so long-term fasting isn't an option, but after a combination of short-term fasting and and IF, I found my sweet spot. One meal a day is only convenient if you're a recluse! Plus, I avoid discussing my "not yet ready for primetime" diet. : )

I read recently a comment in another lecture which impressed me: ""Metabolic health" IS the future. Language matters, and this term is the best to talk about the BIOCHEMISTRY of health. I no longer want to "loose weight" or "lower my XYZ", what I want is to be metabolically healthy, which means some times I want more fat, sometimes I want more carbs, sometimes I want more HIIT workouts, sometimes I want more strength training, sometimes I want more low intensity, endurance workout. We need better, cheaper ways to measure our key indicators and adjust our diet / activity as needed." I would add that we should be more aware of our endocrine system function. From Wikipedia: "Endocrinology is a branch of biology and medicine dealing with the endocrine system, its diseases, and its specific secretions known as hormones. It is also concerned with the integration of developmental events proliferation, growth, and differentiation, and the psychological or behavioral activities of metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sleep, digestion, respiration, excretion, mood, stress, lactation, movement, reproduction, and sensory perception caused by hormones."

I have been doing Keto for about three months and lost 38 lbs. Hunger was well controlled and have done several 72 hours fasts for the Autophagy benefits.I have recently switched to Low Carb and Hi Protein as I found I was really losing muscle mass and had to get it back up. The down side is that I am getting aggressively hungry even though I am Low Carb. The weight loss has stopped but I am feeling better. I am sometimes burning in excess of 4400 cal/day on the days that I am at the gym and can only see this as my body wanting more energy intake.

Don't forget to eat animal fats ..fat helps you stay full and have energy..
@miked11024 жыл бұрын
@@kaygibson1842 absolutely correct about animal fats. I have now started a resistance training program as I have lost a significant amount of muscle mass over the past three months. I am switching from Keto to Low Carb. Carbs are the only macronutrient which we do not have to intake. Protein and fats are going to be the key macronutrients for my upcoming diet change in order to rebuild my muscle mass. I am 55 years young and it will be a challenge but not impossible as many others think.

I started the 20/4 last Tuesday and am just a novice but haven't counted the content of what I've been eating but have severely dropped the carbs, I'm now in the 47th hour of what I plan to be a 50 hour fast and have never felt better in all seriousness...the dog walk at 25 hrs yesterday started with a bit of "wooziness" but that cleared and I haven't had one hunger pang since that point. A pint of water with ACV and a half lemon juice each day and lots of decaff green tea. I feel I could go another day but better not overdo this... when I break the fast it's on to full Keto diet....What a revelation this has been- thanks Dr Ekberg!!!

OMAD is a huge challenge to most people in our society because eating for them functions as infantile oral gratification, which is a learned behavioral adaptation. This is very difficult to overcome since it requires mental and emotional control of impulses. And who stops to contemplate on where their impulses come from?

Hi Dr Ekberg. Thank you so much for your info! You are helping so many. I have been LCHF for 10 mos, strict keto for 4 mos. Last morning reading was glucose 82, blood keton 1.5. I've done only a couple of 23:1 IF's. I do not have weight to lose. My question: what do you recommend as far as diet/IF regarding chronic illness, bacterial and viral infections (namely lyme disease).

Thank You Debra G. While there are many general things that a person can do to improve their health, such as reducing sugar, grain and processed foods. Some conditions are a little more complicated and require very specific analysis of the body. In my office we use Nutrition Response Testing to find and handle the root cause of the problem. 😀

Good that i have asked my copy of blood test and found out and now i knew it is all abouy insulin/carbs and nearly a prediabetic.
