Probably the best produced product review I have ever seen on KZbin: great detail, fantastic editing pace, great shots (loved the use of the dark to compare the flame sizes!), comprehensive yet to the point. It is also a good advert for your business - the quality of the production tells me that the person responsible does things right. If ever I'm looking for Celtic jewellery I check Dave's wares out! Wish all videos were as well made as this.

I've been using it for the past few days and I find it so useful that I'm even using it at my desk, where I can just use my regular soldering iron. Like you said, it heats up much faster than electric, so you can just turn it off and save gas, then switch it back on and it'll be up to temperature in no time! It's a fantastic piece of kit :D

I bought one of these a few months ago thinking it would be ideal as I didn't want to be tethered to a cord. They are OK but one down side and I think its worth mentioning is the heat exhaust. You have to be mindful of this particularly if you are working close to other parts or structures which can ignite, melt or burn easily, including your fingers! I on sold mine unit and went for a 50w lithium battery soldering iron. 100% better.

Yes, a good point , especially with the solid tips like the knife or the soldering tips, the heat comes out of the sides. Whatever the tip, it still has a flame. Dave

@CelticDreamsCoUk

You can lock the flame on. What you do with it , or attatch makes no difference. Its the flame that provides the heat, so whatever you are doing you can have constant heat, if you wish. Dave

Hello Dave, Great video, i'm in doubt about what solder to buy... Can this tool be used to anneal silver or gold? and for silver jewellery beginners, would you recommend to buy this one or the Versaflame? Many thanks!
@CelticDreamsCoUk
@CelticDreamsCoUk 5 жыл бұрын
For jewellery making I would suggest the Versaflame. The main reason being it has a larger gas tank and so will burn longer between refills. Possibly a "slightly" larger flame too. Dave

You can use it anywhere, as long is not in high wind. Great for automotive jobs. As for wattage, that's a tricky one. Yes it can be used as a soldering iron, but at full flame, its way more powerful than any electrical soldering iron. Hope this helps. Dave

@CelticDreamsCoUk
@CelticDreamsCoUk Жыл бұрын
If you just want a jewelry soldering torch, then a Chef's type Butane torch is much better. Hotter flame, bigger flame, and hold more gas, ie less refilling. This tools is useful in the fact that it does many things. But there are better torches, and better soldering irons. Depending on what you want to do.

I too started with a butane pencil torch. It’s a matter of personal taste, I guess. The Dremel is a little thicker, but perfectly comfortable to handle (I have big hands). The main advantage is that the larger tank will last longer and allows a larger flame than a pencil torch. Hope this helps. Dave

Good review thank you, Great product when you get it, it works great, however BE WARNED: the Catalyst does not last very long, as soon as it starts to fail the performance of the products drops dramatically until it stops working. These ‘spares, are very hard to find and when you do they are almost the price of a new Versatip, I have lost two already due to this as I was originally told I must have somehow damaged the catalyst mesh! I think Dremel is taking us all for a ride on this product.

I totally agree Bagariddim! I was thrillled when I received my Versatip as a very welcome birthday gift some years ago. It became an essential part of my yachtie kit - especially useful on my boat for soldering electronics; cutting sheets, halyards, etc and so much more - until the catalyst failed. It lasted just past the 1 year warranty and has remained unusable in its box for several years. I have tried everywhere to find replacement catalysts and found only the ridiculously expensive kit which includes unnecessary parts. I cannot understand why Dremel don't supply 3 or 4 catalysts in the original box or, at the very least, supply them as replacement packs at reasonable prices. I have seen many complaints from other dissatisfied - and bewildered clients such as myself. Dremel obviously don't give a flying fig!

Any tips for soldering aluminium rings, mate?
@CelticDreamsCoUk
@CelticDreamsCoUk 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm, That's a skill I don't claim to have. I believe aluminium (UK spelling) can be soldered but it has several issues. Firstly it melts at a very low temperature, so you can't use silver solders with it, you'd need to use special aluminium solder (if such a thing exists). I have seen videos of people using aluminium welding rods and torches, (with larger pieces) but the issue is then that the aluminium oxidises very quickly and so must be kept clean in order for the solder to bond. How you would solder small rings, I'm not sure. Hope this helps you get started looking for the answer. Dave

Is there anything I might be doing wrong when igniting or do I have a faulty tool- if so I will send it back
@CelticDreamsCoUk
@CelticDreamsCoUk 5 жыл бұрын
I'd suggest the first thing is to simply try it with a small open flame. Make sure the tank is full, but leave it to rest for 5 mins to allow the gas to settle. light the flame and ensure that you can change the flame size up and down. If you can then the unit seems ok, If not then perhaps there's an issue with the valve. Hope this helps. Dave

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but didn't it ever happen to anyone that this thing exploded? Maybe not the Dremel ones, but the Chinese torches similar to this one perhaps? I'm wondering if it's just a stupid fear of mine that it would explode in my hand, since an electrical one, one of those instant heat solders once went "boom" on me while working and luckily I wasn't injured, but it was the hell of a scare!
@CelticDreamsCoUk

No I've never heard of one exploding. But just do be clear, you are referring to an electrical soldering iron and also to Chinese copies. I don't sell these tools, so I do publish every comment, good and bad to help give an honest opinion. You can see how many views and comments the video has received. No one has ever comment about an explosion. I doubt the tool would be allowed on sale if this happened, it would be recalled. perhaps the Chinese copies don't have the same standards. Hope this helps answer. Dave.

What is your opinion on the Versatip and sterling silver jump rings? I've read a couple of sources that haven't said the Versatip isn't good for soldering open sterling silver jump rings closed? Thank you.
@CelticDreamsCoUk
@CelticDreamsCoUk 4 жыл бұрын
It's a torch and as such is perfectly fine for silver soldering jump rings. The torch simply provides the heat, so if anyone is struggling, it's not the torch its their soldering method that's the problem. Almost any torch can be used for soldering silver and gold. But there are always three golden rules. the joint must be close fitting (no gap), clean (even from finger grease), and well fluxed. Apart from that all you need is proper solder and heat. Dave

I used it a lot and it still works.

Mate I have one and been using it as an auto electrician for several years. When you have the soldering tip on theres a small vent hole on the side. Flame just protrudes and its great for heating wire up so the solder sticks and also the best for heat shrink. Then that travelling cap you spoke of. It is for when its hot. A safety cap. Put it on when the tip is roaring hot but do not put away till its cooled.

Once I bought one just because I was curious what the hell is that. Waste of money. My digital control soldering station is much better than this pervertion. My grandpa's soldering iron is much better too.
@CelticDreamsCoUk
@CelticDreamsCoUk 3 жыл бұрын
Indeed a purpose made digital soldering station is always going to be better for low temp electrical soldering (as long as you have power in the first place). But that's all your soldering iron is designed to do - it doesn't do anything else. Remember I'm a jeweller and you cant solder jewellery with an electrical soldering iron. However good it is, even your grandpas' - you need a gas flame. Such as this Versatip. Yes, there are many specific tools, just for one job -all better. But this is not a specific tool. It has many tips which are designed to be versatile - hence the name. Perhaps buying a tool just to see "what the hell is that", isn't the best way to make an informed purchasing decision. Hence my video. Dave
@glaurung666
@glaurung666 3 жыл бұрын
@@CelticDreamsCoUk maybe you are right, for I am not a jeweller, but use soldering iron for building different electrical stuff. But it happened, that I needed some autonomous tool in my country house, where electricity sometimes shuts off, for example during the storm or heavy rain. So that thing didn't fit me(

Excellent video sir. Now please help. The catalist cube inside the nozzle does not last very long and Deremel does not seem to stock it at all. So your only option it seems is to buy a completely new torch. This is pathetic of Dremel. Any other way to replace it?

Will this work on silver solder. Have bought one for this reason but doesn't seem to take hold of the solder
@CelticDreamsCoUk
@CelticDreamsCoUk 4 жыл бұрын
Yes this will work with silver solder, as you see me soldering a ring in the video. But do understand, that proper silver solder for jewelry use melts at around 600 - 700 C, so we solder jewellery with the torch flame. The soldering tip is only for use with low temp electrical solder. It is important that you understand the difference between soldering electrical and soldering jewelry . Dave

@craigsteyntheartistcraig3592
@craigsteyntheartistcraig3592 4 жыл бұрын
@@CelticDreamsCoUk It might be due to it's high temperature, even at low, that the tip oxidises very quickly. It was impossible to tin and solder wouldn't adhere to the tip...like with a normal iron that's messed up. However I read, either somewhere here or elsewhere to us LOTS of flux and this might help. Which is what I did... I soaked it in there for a bit and it did. After that the tip tinned properly and I could actually use it. I just give it a longer than usual dunk every now and then and keep a close eye on it. I'll just wait and see. I think Dremel should release some kind of statement or something with regards to this because after some research I realised that this is a common problem for some.
