Drenched and Determined: My CANAL BOAT Journey continues [Ep 127]

What goes up must come down, so this week I head back down the Ashby Canal cruising very long days in all weathers to meet with my friend on the Coventry Canal. I almost crash my boat when my stern gets grounded in the silt and my bow flies half way across the canal into another Narrowboats cruising path. Thankfully the oncoming boat knows how to handle their boat and avoids a head on collision.

It’s Heidi and Bonny Day! Hello Heidi! I would like to share something with you. Your videos mean so much to me. I am going through a bit of a rough time right now with health issues of my own and being a fulltime caregiver to my husband who is not well. On Thursdays I get to grab a cup or glass of tea and hop on board the Rum Wench and go cruising with you and Bonny. I am learning so much about canals and the surrounding areas, I can ride along and not get sea sick (I don’t do well on boats of any type), I can spend time with new friends on the toe path. I can’t be the only one who love this. There must be bunches of people (30k in fact) who love cruising with you whether it is just cruising the canals, going exploring, helping to DJ concerts, cleaning out the weed hatch, blackening boat bottoms or dumping cassettes. Hey Heidi. Excellent single handed boating. I don’t have any tattoos nor have I been to Thailand but i did backpack on my own through northern France last fall. Used all local trains, buses and walked everywhere. Communicated using my fractured French. Started in Paris right bank and trained to Saint Malo, bused to Mount saint michelle, trained to Angers, trained to Caen, bused to Honfleur, trained to Issy les Moulineaux and finished in Paris left bank before returning to the States. Stayed in prearranged airbnbs. Not bad for a 73 year old man going it alone. I met so many wonderful people French and from elsewhere. Hope to do it again after the new year. I lived in Malawi when I was a kid, and I remember the geckos there. They were welcomed in the house, as they are very efficient pest controllers. Their ability to walk across a window pane was mindblowing to me as a 12 year old.

Heidi, I live in a flat above a tattoo parlour and the girls who work there look at me like an artist looks at a blank canvas. All during my naval service I resisted having a tattoo and had an ear pierced instead. I’m still a tattoo virgin at age 81!!!!! Happy cruising. Capt John.

Yes, I like my tattoos. My kids got them for me for a couple birthdays. I have Jesus who is crucified on a anchor on one arm. A angel with no halo with one wing in the fire on the other. kids thought that was appropriate for their father. Thanks for this weeks ride

Many years ago I got a tattoo on my upper arm that I have never regretted and last year of all the places for it to happen I got skin cancer and part of the tattoo had to be removed. It now reminds me of all the good times that I had in the sun!😊

Hey Heidi and Bonnie, that's a lucky Gecko if you ask me! It brought you both to narrow boating and now to all of us! I did the Ashby a good few years ago bringing back my friends parents 70" from Brounston to Alvechurch! We only went as far as the first winding hole with a conveniently placed pub doing"Curry and a pint" for a Fiver (£5!) It was a few years ago! But on the way back to the Cov it was midnight, summer solstice! It was as light as day! Awesome canal! Great memories! Forgot to turn at Cov Junction too! Went straight into the opposite bank! Love the Ashby almost as much as I love Bonnie! Nope, not really, no contest! Bon's takes it by a country mile! ❤😘🐕

Heidi, absolutely first rate… 30, 0000 subscribers and another fantastic video in the books. I particularly liked your visit along the restored section and your mentioning on more than one occasion, how you really like the Ashby, you hit all the sweet spots for mooring, because like your boat, mine also has a deep draft! In many ways I am relieved that you have left the canal now, my experience, though utterly incredible and my love of the Ashby fairly well known, unfortunately left a bitter sweet taste in my mouth, and while you’re absolutely right about the ASA and many of the incredible boaters down there, there are some ‘vessels’ that have another view and frankly it’s incredible to think, that people in our community can be so cruel. Wow! That said, it’s great to see Bonny settled and you safely back on the Coventry, although now, I guess you are off there by now! Ttfn …

Another lovely evening with Heidi and Bonny on the beautiful Ashby. Bonny is doing so well and is getting more adorable each week. As to the subject of tattoos, yes, I have one . I got it when I was 19 years old and as I usually tell people who ask or comment about it, it was when I was young and stupid. Sometimes I have regretted getting it because it's on the front of my right wrist which even though it is fairly small, is very visible. It was 1972 when it was done so it's just that old, dark blue ink, and I will give you some advise about tattoos, NEVER put someone's name on your body unless it's your children! It was my first partner, so of course, it was True Looovve. At least, for 6 years or so I thought it was. Now 50 something years and many other true loves later, it's still there reminding me of my many adventures! Thanks for the lovely video and memories. Take care and stay safe you two.

Hi Heidi, I always wanted a tattoo, but I have been to scared. Anyway last year I was traveling to North Dakota, Nebraska, and Alabama. I went to a taboo place and got a tatoo of a dragon fly. I did some research o dragon flies. I found out that Jenna flies were around when the dinosaurs roam the Earth. They have huge wings and they were about the size of a pterodactyl. They evolved and shrunk to a smaller size. I like that they eat mosquitoes because I hate them. I only have one tattoo, just one. I want to get another one maybe but I’m not sure if I ever get another tattoo. I’m just too scared of the pain. That’s my story of getting one tattoo. 😂

Hey Heidi, big hugs for you and Bonny ❤ I've got 6 tattoos and don't regret any of them. The first one i had was a bee on my left ankle cos they're busy things like me. My 2nd was a dolphin on my right ankle, cos they're beautiful and serene creatures of the sea. My third was a small dragon on my right shoulder, as this is my chinese year animal and a tiger on my left shoulder cos this is my hubby's chinese year animal( he has both of these tattooed on his head). My fifth is a heart with a scroll underneath on my left breast with my hubby's name in it so i can always keep him close to my heart. My 6th, and last tattoo is a heart-shaped padlock with 3 keys hanging from the latch in the centre of my back. On the end of each key is the first initial of my kids names. Mothers carry their kids with them forever and this is how I do it. Take care 😘❤

Wouldn't just giving your wheel a few revs in reverse help to throw weeds off the prop? Mind you we once had a sari wound around the prop and that took about an hour and a sharp (ish) knife to remove it. Makes you wonder if there was some way of fitting a macerator on the back somewhere to reduce drag on weeds round props. Mind you in the weather we've been having lately, you can get absolutely drowned in about 10 seconds. In the 1970s we laughed at boats that had a thames van welded on the top. Watch out for Storm Babet, take care out there.

I absolutely 💯 love your adventures, and l have enjoyed the scenery. I used to enjoy my rum, tempted now to buy a selection box. Tattoos - I have 9 tattoos all of which tell a story. When my beautiful soul mate wing dog passed during lockdown June 2020, though the vet was v understanding i couldn't be with Skylar at the very end. Heartbreaking. I wanted a tattoo of her. Got wires a bit crossed at tattoo parlour yet I thought sod it, my rebellious streak allowed me to have her on top right arm; should have gone for right shoulder. It is absolutely spitting of her and she is with me forever. I want a robin now as for past 5 years, ive gardened for the most wonderful elderly lady [who very sadly passed 1st October] & robin became my friend. Her son said "are you taking your robin?" I have pictures of robin so he is next, pesky little bird.🐾❤️🙏🐾

As I said in the vlog my gear box is mechanical not hydraulic and it’s not even a possibility to go forwards to reverse …. It has to pause for at least 2 seconds 😄🏴‍☠️

I’m hoping it’s a trip up the Langoflin (sp?) for the winter, 2.0. Last winter was a blast, I thought it was gorgeous and I especially loved the place you docked at the basin I think. You had power and there were lots of fun characters. I was thinking about you all going to get wood from the recently cut trees. Another great vlog. Nice boat handling from you and the other boaters (even when you grounded and The Rum Wench decided to make things interesting). The tattoo is nice, and you managed to get it sorted out nicely. I know of somebody who's tattoo may have saved their life. He has a rare blood group, and so (over his heart) he had tattooed 'Bld Grp' and the blood group. Several years later he was involved in a very nasty accident, and was losing copious amounts of blood. At the hospital they sent down a request to the pathology lab for O neg (the universal blood group that can be given to everybody; I have this blood type), but they were very low on that. The doctor drew a blood sample from him (for the lab to cross match), noting that they might want to try against the blood group in the tattoo first. They did, it matched, they had some, and so got it back to the doctor with minimal delay.

At my age I would never have a tattoo. Glad I wasn't that brave when I was younger either. I've heard that (depending where you put them) when you get older and wrinkly they can look absolutely horrid. Can you imagine in a medical emergency (ambulance drivers, buff rescue firemen) if they saw a tattoo that was supposedly hidden - well, oh my. lol I don't think I could handle the pain anyway getting it in the first place. Tattoos, of course... being an old sailoress I have a few. All of horses for some reason, one of which is on my stomach. Naturally when the guy did it years ago that horse was a fit and frisky mare, nowadays it's more of a hefty plough horse. Top tip, never tattoo your tum. 🤣 I do want a tatt of my JRT on my arm though, I'll get around to it eventually.🐶

Ahoy shipmates, after the rain we've had this week I'm going to have to clear out my weedhatch ,another laugh along with Heidi and Bonny. My dad was in the Navy ,I asked him once why he didn't have a tattoo ? He went all quiet and sneaky looking so I always wondered if he had a hidden one somewhere between the bows, I know they used to drink Rum and smoke Park Drive like it was going out of fashion, he never touched Rum again when he left the Navy so he may of had a hidden Krackern, Bless him ,Great Blog Cheers ☺ x

Hey Heidi. The subject of tattoos , I spent many years at sea but I never wanted or got coerced into one . Except for one occasion. I think it was Portugal?? Anyway I was on boats and one of the lads had a tattoo on his butt of the propellers of the boat. We had unusual shaped props. Anyway after a good night's binge we decided to go get tattoos. Well the place was full ,.so we had to wait and I had elected to go last. Well I fell asleep and upon waking had no longer the need for one. Lucky escape as two of the lads got infections.
