I was taught to fish by my grandad using a whip when I was just a nipper. It’s great fun and I have a couple of short whips for my sons to use but they’re still a bit too young. I’m looking forward to having a go again with them soon.

This video is as allways loaded with tips, thanks for that Alan. When fishing an 8 meter whip in deep water (4 meters or more in Voorne canal Holland) I (experimental) use a 1.5 gram sliding float. The one with two eyes on it and a stopper above on the mainline. When you strike it falls back on the bulk or on a nr. 8 shot above it. This way flicking out the line is working great (all the weight is low on the line) no matter where the wind is coming from.

I absolutely love whip fishing and one of our rivers is perfect for it. Up to 12ft deep just 5-6 metres out and suits a 5 metre whip. That's where the fish are and you have to feed a fair bit of loose maggot, or whatever hookbait you're using, to bring fish off the bottom as Alan says and out of the weed. But on the day it's pure magic. Met Alan in '96 when we were both doing some work for Mustad and before he won any World titles. Nice guy!

Another top video, just wondering if you adjust the depth sliding the float down the rig length or reduce the rig length as well?.

It looked like you were using a half-butt there at times Alan - are they available for sale? I love my drennan 8m whip and its my preferred line of attack on rivers whenever I can. Looks like you had a lovely days fishing. Would love to see you doing a bleak / short whip video.

Cheers Alan. Question when I whip fish the river yare with hemp, casters and tares after a, while the, fish get too big to swing. Would you switch to pole or whip with one section elasticated.
