If rice is so bad for you, why are Chinese people so thin?
Timestamps:
0:00 If rice is so bad for you, why are Chinese people so thin?
0:50 What did Chinese people eat before versus now?
1:42 In China now, sugar consumption and snacking have increased
Someone asked me, if rice is so bad for you, why are Chinese people so thin? Actually, they aren’t as thin as you think.
From 1985 to 2015 there was a massive spike of obesity in children in China. I mean obesity, not simply being overweight. For boys the increase was 14 times; for girls, 11 times.
The Chinese were once considered one of the leanest populations in the world. Now they’re ranked second in overweight behind the US because they’re eating like Americans.
Chinese people always consumed rice but let’s take a look at the rest of their diet in the early 90’s versus right now:
Less sugar then; far more sugar now
More vegetables then; fewer now
More fish and seafood then; less now
Mostly boiled food then; now it’s mostly fried
More fermented foods like natto, miso, kimchi then; less now
Western food and beverage companies shape obesity policy now
Soda consumption in the US is decreasing so beverage companies are marketing heavily in other countries. As well, in 1995 most soy was non-GMO. Now, most of it is. The pork raised in China is fed mostly GMO feed.
To summarize, the Chinese people are getting fatter because of an increase in consumption of sugar and refined carbohydrates and a decrease in their traditional healthy foods. You can see why rice combined with a US diet is problematic.

To clarify the answer to this question. The traditional Chinese diet does include rice for sure, BUT with lots of vegetables, fermented foods, fish and WITHOUT the added junk, sugar (as in soda) and GMO soy oil. So it really depends on what you are adding to the rice and the type. If you only ate brown rice, you would deplete your zinc and other minerals due to phytates and if you only ate white rice, you'll develop Beru Beri (B1 deficiency). On the glycemic index, rice ranges between 50-90 depending on the type of rice (wild, brown to refined white) so you have to look at the whole picture: the type of rice, quantities and what else you are eating with it.

So it's more about junk food and GMO then.. I don't drink sugary beverages, but I do eat a lot of fish, meat, rice, beans, soups, veggies, fruits, avocados and tortillas, blood sugar near perfect, no high blood pressure, resting heart beat around 45-50 BPM. I'm part Mexican native Taruhumara from Chihuahua. I have Cardio for days, maybe it's genetics, who knows.

I’m sorry, but traditionally only people lived on the coast ate lots of fish, but, look at the map, China doesn’t have long long coast line, over 80% or more people actually didn’t have access to sea food at all. Sea food has been luxurious food that regular families in China cannot afford to eat that often.

I figured that rice is okay to eat as long as you are eating enough healthy vegetables to help utilize the sugars in rice instead of storing them as fat, fermented foods and healthy fats also help reduce the negative effects of high glycemic rice. Thank you for the clarification doctor, I always appreciate your helpful information on health.

A dear friend of mine moved to the US from Taiwan in the late 80's when he was a teenager; he said he was skinny like most people in Taiwan and their daily diet consisted of a small bowl or two of rice, lots of vegetables (some sauteed, some boiled, fresh or canned), some meat/fish, or soups with vegetables, some meat/fish, with/without ramen noodles. 15 years later when he went back to Taiwan for a visit in early 2000's, he noticed many young Taiwanese a lot chubbier than he'd ever seen before and that lots of pastry shops, bakeries, and boba drink cafes had sprouted everywhere. From the mid-90's internet boom and onward, people in general have become more sedentary by having their eyes glued to a screen. Couple this with all the sweet treats or highly processed carbs plus the snacking of such carbs and we have a recipe for plumpness.

@@AgathaLOutahere Yes, I believe you. The point is that however slim Taiwanese in general may be, my friend noticed right away that the youth from the 70's and 80's were even MORE SLIM than the youth of the 2000's, and they ate rice or noodles daily. So I don't think eating rice is the problem. I'm agreeing with Dr. Berg's point of view that part of the problem just may be the increase in sugary and highly processed carbs consumption. I would imagine Taiwanese people realizing at some point in the last 10 years that they need to cut back on these kinds of foods and be more active.

Well said! I watch videos of what I eat in a day of Japanese or South Korean women and they eat TONS of rice in lots of forms and pastas or noodles and they’re all thin. I’m not sure how old they are though, because they don’t show their faces. They could be 20 I guess. But they don’t workout or even walk to shops or work much. I’m jealous sometimes but I’m not afraid of carbs and they don’t make me gain weight or gain fat. But then again I’m not eating fast food, fried foods, sodas, Doritos, sweets, etc.

I think you're all missing one thing... yes, the diet has changed for many parts of the world but the major problem is that people are far LESS ACTIVE. Kids nowadays are not running around and playing outside with their friends. They'll finish dinner and then play games all night while downing several cans of pop and a bag of chips. The kids that are not spending time outdoors is also lacking in Vitamin D which will result in other illnesses.

When I grew up in China in the 80’s, we didn’t have this habit of snacking. We eat three meals a day and that’s it. Breakfast in the morning around 6:30am , lunch at 12 and dinner at 7. And that’s it. if you are hungry in between, just be. not like here in USA, people have to eat something nonstop!

My uncle has calves that are thicker than his thighs. Then comes my generation. We have been eating American portions and styles since we grew up. All of my cousins are nearly double the sizes of our parents. We still eat rice and kimchi, but our portions are enough to feed a family of four in Zimbabwe. In addition, we're gulping it down with Dr. Pepper and topping it off with Reeses Chocolate bars. There are so many fat Koreans right now that sometimes I cannot find even one 'skinny' person throughout the entire day. It is becoming such a national concern how fat we are becoming, that even politicians are addressing it. I never thought this would happen in Korea (or China).

My wife is Asian and her entire family eats it with every meal and in high quantities(probably 75% percent of their plate is rice). My thought is, the foods that they eat with it are good wholesome foods, basically veggies and meat. Unlike here we have junk food. The trend I see is not the the rice being bad it's the other foods people eat along side it, just like you demonstrated in this video. The Chinese population was skinny until they added the junk food.

They were Hindu and strict vegetarians. They had no refrigerator. Everything was cooked and prepared fresh daily. Lots of fresh vegetables and fresh fruit, Etc. I ate rice approximately three times a day and lots of lentils cooked in different sauces and gravies. I look back on that part of my life and for those two years I realize that that is the healthiest I have ever been in my life. I had no sodas or soft drinks although I craved them but nothing like that was available because of no Refrigeration. The only beverages that I had was water tea or coffee. And usually the South Indian tea and coffee is served with sugar and milk. There were not a lot of sweets or junk Foods available. I don't even remember back then finding candy bars in the markets. Of course today that has changed in India also as it has in China with junk food more candy bars Etc. Thank you for your hard work on your channel and bringing all of this good information to us. ... I will be making another trip back to that Village this coming spring. Of course now I am overweight but working on it and trying to eat healthier. Your channel is helping me enormously. Thank you so much. I wished I lived close enough to you for you to be my personal coach. I would let you film me and show the enormous difference that could take place with an old fart like me.

People in the US keep stacking food once a week in their house. When they're bored, they take a snack from the cabinets and fridge. In China, they go to the market or grocery almost everyday and barely stack in the fridge because they'd rather eat fresh food and not frozen. Everything is fresh. You won't see "Fresh Frozen Food" like in the US. There's no such thing as fresh frozen food. It's either fresh or frozen.

Saw a video by a younger asian guy on white rice and how it affects blood sugar levels. Turns out the same amount of cooked white rice consumed over the same amount of time will change the spike in blood sugar levels depending on whether you use chopsticks or a spoon. When using chopsticks only a small amount of rice is consumed with every mouthful leading to a low spike in blood sugar, where using a spoon where a large amount of rice is consumed with every mouthful leads to a high spike in blood sugar!

This is 💯 true with Vietnamese. I'm Vietnamese and born here in America, when I was growing up all my family was amazed at how fat I was because Vietnamese kids are so thin. Now most of the Vietnamese American kids are fat and grow up over 6ft tall. This is due to the American diet and all the hormones in our chicken, pork and beef. I started Intermittent Fasting 2 years ago, when I was 176 pounds, I lost 31 pounds and 6" off my waist. I'm now 145 lbs with a 28" waist. Also, the French and Italians use high quality, unfortified/unenriched, flour in their carb goodies. Makes it easier to digest and more usable by the body. Almost 95 percent of the white flour in the United States is enriched with iron and four of the B vitamins: thiamin, niacin, riboflavin and folic acid. By contrast, fortified flour may contain folic acid in amounts that exceed those present in whole-wheat flour. Calcium, a nutrient that is not naturally present in wheat kernels or whole-wheat flour, is another nutrient that may be present in fortified flour. There has been correlative studies done about the link between enriched/fortified flour and obesity.

Just wanted to clarify, Chinese don't have natto or miso. They are Japanese food. Also, growing up in China in the 90s, I think the problem with obesity wasn't really with fried foods (or rice), but the increasing amounts of processed foods, snacks and drinks. When we were little, our snacks were things made from nuts, sticky rice, or dried fruits, beans, etc. I didn't eat a lot of candies, and a lot of candies were made from berries, sesames.... Drinks were like bean or plum soups instead of pepsi or 7up. We had lots of home-made fried food, noodles and buns, and they didn't really affect us much. But I think our lifestyle was a lot more active though. Even for people who had office jobs, they probably biked to work or kids' schools everyday. With lunch breaks, that'll be at least 4 trips in a days. We also walked longer distances and cardio exercises were common. So maybe people nowadays think carbs are bad because our lifestyles have become a lot more sedentary due to various reasons.

Even though the Chinese/Japanese/Koreans consume rice in almost every meal, their intake is controlled: 1) Eating from a small bowl limits maximum consumption. 2) Eating from the rice bowl with chopsticks reduces the rice to meat/veggie ratio per mouthful compared to using a spoon. 3) Meals are often accompanied with a bowl of clear soup; this makes the rice expand in the stomach which in turn makes you feel full earlier and longer.

I can confirm that many of the old generations were thin when they were young because there was freaking famine going on at the time. The problem with that is, once you've experienced famine and you have never had food in abundance your entire life, and then suddenly they become easily accessible everywhere, you tend to overfeed yourself and your family until someone fall ill. The concept of overeating will feel so alien it could be a mind blowing experience to you. My mom still struggles to manage food in proper portion to this day and she always over buys, over cooks and overeats. She just can't believe that we are actually full with the portion we want and she always try to sneak more food into our bowl or plate or whatever. I have to develop iron will to stick to my healthy eating plan with her around constantly trying to desolve my resolution and get some more food that I definitely don't need into me.

My sisters friend moved from Jamaica to America. In 5 months her weight had ballooned massively. In Jamaica she was slim as she ate a mainly a Jamaican diet. Seeing that happen to her over a relatively short period of time further let me know that a lot of food in America isn’t for humans even though it tastes really good.

that's surpring because jamaican has plenty plenty obese women. We're a poor country, we eat chicken back, TONS of white flour, soft drink, fried chicken kfc, fast food is everywhere in Kingston. And if you're super poor you just eat flour Dumplings, rice and ox tail sauce which is basically just grease. If she comes from a rural area the food is definitely much cleaner, way more ground provisions etc. but there's a reason Jamaican men enjoy hefty women, Jamaica is naturally full of them! doesn't go to the waistline though, because they're all fit and active, so it does create a different body shape. large hourglasses. I noticed when i moved to the States the women may have the same bomber on the scale but much sloppier bodies, aka lumps and rolls that indicate a lack of muscle tonnage, and then also very very large stomachs and flat butts, which I'm learning indicates insulin resistance!

sorry for typing so much, but to add, I actually went from that curvy Jamaican girl to a very slim woman when I moved to Vermont. There's nothing bad about American food, there's everything bad about American choices! I was broke, spent $15 a week on beans, rice, frozen veg and a bit of meat, exercised regularly. Ate one meal a day, very easy to do when the food is bland vs all the delicious food we have back in Jamaica when your aunties can't stop feeding you! Bam, 5 months later I was 120 pounds with a 26 inch waist. After hearing my whole life that I was just a big girl like a Jamaican girl is meant to be. Nope! Nothing wrong with American food, people make constant choices to eat junk and then blame a country that's FULL of endless choices.

@@Nonyah123 My friend was from MoBay (country to some haha) but also from what we'd call a middleclass family so they ate quite well. With men its all about proportion. You can have 2 women who are clinically obese but if shes packing it in the booty instead of on her shoulders its a turn on like you say. I'm no different. Some women are lucky their body stores fat in areas that enhance their shape. I guess when we say "fat" we think of the undesirable storage of fat rather than just the western idea of "thin". If we have a choice men don't want women who are built like Strawberries, and even less if build like strawberry pancakes! One thing in Jamaica to go with your point about the soft bodies of women in the US - youre right: In Jamaica most people have to walk to reach somewhere and will sweat nicely in the sun drinking plenty of fluids along the way, but in USA most people drive, don't drink water and there are hardly any hills or gradients in most towns and cities. Women in JA may be big but theyre not weak fluffy clouds due to the land layout.

@@chilled99 Yup! you got it right exactly. I'm from middle class st andrew so I ate a balanced diet, but the food was good and my aunties loved turning me into a fluffy girl. never got a single complaint! "as long as yuh belly nuh bang, yuh good!" Distribution represents everything to do with the type of fat on you. Jamaican's are full of muscle due to both genetics (maroons + west Africans), and walking, bicycling, ALL dang day. And dance on the weekend alll weekend, and you know the girls have to know how to dance good good. So coming to the US for college I was shocked! The girls within the college were thin due to hs activity, but the second I stepped off campus, it was liek the second the girls graduated they turned into lumps! and their booties somehow moved up into their stomachs! I always believed it was a stereotypical "white people apple shape" we'd say, but nope, black American's have that shape too. It's a 'eat and no movement shape'! I've lost my fluffiness through reduced eating, and toned up but I am noooot stopping the movement when I graduate because that 'bang belly', it's not sexy!

I think a lot of people don’t realize that the “white” rice that Asian cultures eat doesn’t always necessarily mean white as in highly processed and milled with ZERO fiber. Japan, for example, has been eating it for hundreds of years. My parents and their friends are at that age where they have to get colonoscopies and they often have to get extensions in order to check for polyps. This is due to their ancestors having a high fiber diet which not only includes vegetables, but also carbohydrates high in fiber.

For a year I worked as a vehicle recovery truck driver. Used to be on the road for up to 10 hours a day with not much time to stop on most days. And on long journeys to help stay awake I started drinking a can of redbull in the mornings. I drank this for a month everyday until I felt all my joints aching, I felt weak, and a frail kind of feeling, I felt absolutely terrible. I realised it must be this crap redbull. So I immediately stopped and it took around 3 months to feel back to normal I again. I shall never drink any fizzy drinks ever again. Its poison

Yes, I’m asian, and if you don’t include rice in your meal, it’s not considering a “meal”.
