Imagine India never had issues with diabetes before until the US fast food chains brought their MAD diet. From what I understand they always had a higher metabolism and consumed those rice and roti carbs fast because of the type of work they did which was labour intensive. Now much more sedentary lifestyle as well has impacted.

Previously india has had chronic food shortage issues. Suddenly from 80s india turned food surplus. Instead of diversifying to high quality food, we have taken the American path. Lots of processed rice flour and sugar. Protein is minimal in diet as many Indians put vegetarianism to fore due to blind religious beliefs. Hence why despite consuming double the iron of an American woman and Indian woman has a 80% chance of iron deficiency. Not to forget our water is mostly filtered sewage so chronic gi bacterial infections ruining our vitamin b12 absorption capabilities.

There is a genetic adaptation for Indians that arose due to extreme droughts and extreme food & water scarcity - the potbelly is the body's defense mechanism of storing extra fat to tide over days when no nutrition is available - kinda like a camel lol. Hence getting rid of it is even more difficult and one of the major contributors to the high number of incidents of Diabetes & metabolic & cardiac diseases now that nutritional availability has been completely reversed with cheap carbs. Thus a person with a South Asian lineage will have to work harder to get rid of the fat even when the BMI is within range - a real bummer.

Now, nearly everyone has it and hospitals are there in every corner !!! I wonder how health deteriorated with in few decades 😢 Thank u Dr. Eric for this content 🙏 EDIT: Thanks for those who read my comment and for the likes 🙂. Wear clothes based on the season. Not for trends. 14) Avoid toxic people 15) When taking bath, imagine you are flushing out all the negative emotions stored in the body. 16) Eat with focus and good feelings. Never eat when u r sad, angry or nervous. 17) IF is not for everyone. Know ur body constitution - vata, pitta, Kapha. Vata people IF is not much suitable. Others beneficial as per my knowledge. Vata people can go for 12 to 13 hrs max. 18) Be kind to others and have self love. I stop here 😅😅 Have a healthy life 😊 TIP for JUNK FOODIES: Even when you eat junk food eat it before sun set. Chew it well. Eat it happily without gulit. It will get digested. Balance ur junk food with healthy food and exercise too😉

Too much water, too much boiling, a lot of salt and oil, overuse of spices, taste enhancers. And Indians would consume a lot of bread and a very little amount of vegetables. It's not the diet but the way people cook and eat it.

1. Desk jobs that consumes most part of the day . 2. Little to no exercise 3. Going to some place by walk or cycle is considered as low status. Once I went to meet my friend in a moderately nearby restaurant ( 1.4km) by walk , they first question was , why dont you come in a car , are u saving on your petrol bills ?... 4. In an already carb rich diet style , we have started to eat much more carb rich western snacks. Waffles ( loaded with sugars ) , burger ( mostly refined flour ) , pizza ( refined wheat flour ) , fries ( palm oil / seed oil ). , etc ,etc in our diet. 5. Addition of ton of cheese , mayo etc in chats , the prblem is its processed chesse and doesn't hv great quality. Cheese vada pav , cheese masala puri , cheese puff , cheese sandwich , cheese that , cheese this in everything. The problem is most cheese that is used here are actually not " cheese". 6. Though a lot of our older generation did not hv a separate exercise toutine , most had an active lifestyle. Even household chores needed you to do a lot of physicsl work. But today a lot of people in metro cities do not like to do these. Since the problem is partially due to low stomach acid and being vegetarian, here is an affordable solution that should help. Apple Cider Vinegar has been shown to lower the Glycemic Index of many foods, curb the appetite, increases stomach acid, and lowers weight gain. There are a number of videos on YT about this, and I found that it works. Since Apple Cider Vinegar at about 5-6% acidity is very strong, it needs to be mixed with something to make it palatable. I make an vinegar, oil, spices salad dressing with it. I use about 1 tablespoon worth of vinegar on my salad. Works surprisingly well, and costs almost nothing. Strong acids can be hard on tooth enamel, so you may want to rinse after eating. I'm not a doctor or nutritionist, so do your research.

But these are 2 coincidences, there are other factors affecting belly circumference, which are ignored. Indians eat late, have mostly sedentary life, eat a lot of carbs, snack a lot and have a lot more stress especially the ones living in cities.

This is an over-complicated analysis and solution. As many of the comments below, this belly is purely driven by lack of exercise and very bad dietary choices. Being a carnivore or omnivore or a herbivore has nothing to do with it. When I was in college for 2 years, I ate only junk food due to lack of time and gained 20 pounds (mostly in belly). Then I switched back to normal diet and now I am fit.

The main reason for indian belly is the overuse of antibiotics, which gradually leads to gutt issues. Antibiotics are prescribed by doctors since infanthood and even for viral issues, as people need immediate results or people opt for another doctor. Only last year Indian health department advised doctors to reduce antibiotics. Sadly, even now Indians can buy antibiotics over the counter without a doctor's prescription, and there is no pharmacist who knows their job. For example I noticed Edamame causes me bloating so I don't eat it~ I guess there's a common notion that all greens are good for you and that's not true! Some are good, Some are not good! And you have to eliminate those which are not good! Like sugar and dairy is a good place to start, And reducing/eliminating snacking, I got rid of 80% of my problems that way!

Being vegetarian is not the issue here, I've been in villages in Gujarat (a state in India), and the village folks there are slim fit, and even muscular, most of them are vegetarians. The thing is, they eat mostly whole and organic foods, and they work out in the fields, have a very active lifestyle than a sedentary lifestyle, and they don't consume refined carbs, seed oils, or junk food. Indians living in city mostly consume junk food, seed oils, and refined carbs, on top of living a sedentary lifestyle. This is what causes that protruding belly. Humans are definitely omnivores, but vegetarian food should make up majority of our diet, while animal food should be like 20% to 30% of our diet. If you want to look at how our ancestors lived and ate, just look at the hunter gather tribes in modern day like the Hazda tribe, or the uncontacted tribes of Amazon.

The elephant in the room is the grains Indians eat. In the 70s the 'green revolution ' persuaded folks to switch to Wheat and Rice, particularly Hybrids from the west . People switched away from traditional grains like Millets, Amaranth and Ragi and switched to this wholesale. Additionally even traditionally rice was eaten unpolished but now almost all rice is polished - leaving less nutrition. This and increased consumption of refined sugar instead of Jaggery which was consumed traditionally. The green revolution was the Indian edition of 'The great leap backwards'.

Do you know about “resistant starch”, when Rice is refrigerated cold for 12 hours or frozen “after cooking the Rice”, then reheated the next day in the microwave or pot, the cold storage develops a “resistant starch” that will prevent the Rice from turning to body fat. I am not joking as this is a very serious thing. There is a study from Sri Lanka on KZbin about how to prepare Rice for “resistant starch”. There’s two steps to this, the first step is it is cooked with 1 teaspoon of coconut oil for every 1/2 cup of uncooked Rice.

Hard to know what to believe, since you can hear opinions from different sides, all showing evidence and research studies, but all having different conclusions. Another problem with this is that since the person refrigerated the rice or pasta, they then think they can eat even more of it, so they still get fat.

This is full of false equivalencies. Gorillas are vegetarian and they have big bellies but they don't have fatty liver disease. So, to claim big bellies = fatty liver is false. Chimpanzees are mostly vegetarian, they a very small amount of meat very rarely. So, their small bellies are not because they eat meat. It is becasue they eat a lot of fruit which can be digested more quickly (without fermentation) while gorillas eat a lot of fiberous veggies that we humans can't digest. Human diet is even more nutrition rich than chimps. Goats, gorillas and other animals have big bellies but not because they are fat, but because they have to eat food that takes a long time to digest. Humans have big bellies because of the opposite reason, they eat very high calorie food and do very little exercise. Whle the wealty and sedentary Indians have big bellies, vast majority of Indians are not wealthy or sedentary and they are very slim, even though they too are vegetarian. Finally, plenty of meat eaters are pretty fat. Dogs and cats can get very fat on meat heavy food without any veggies or grains. Fact is, meat heavy diet causes a lot of problems for the heart and reduces lifespan, and it is not sustainable for the planet.
