Had severe tightness in my right psoas and moderate in my left following a very long day of full contact rugby 48 hours ago. Followed the video through. The one method the Dr. used which I found most relief with was with the foam roller underneath. I could literally feel significant tightness disappearing and the muscle relaxing. Did the same for the left, alternated back with 2-4 sets total (holding for 1 minute each time). Pain went from a 9 to a 4. Used the foam roller afterward in a direct manner on the psoas. Pain from a 4 to a 1. All of this in 15 minutes. Great video Doctor and thank you.

You can’t directly access the psoas with a foam roller it’s a very DEEP muscle, but good info nonetheless

I am 11 weeks postop total hip replacement and when I complained of pain in my groin, my ortho identified it as a psoas issue and said the only thing that he could do would be to cut it. Seriously.

The psoas is too deep to be treated like in this video. Hate to say it, but this type of pushing into the belly is very wrong and it doesnt do anything. Really liked your easy to understand demonstration. As a massage therapist I did psoas release work but I appreciated the testing for weak and strong psoas and how to rebalance them. You have a very gentle manner and sensitivity when working with soft tissue.

Hello Everyone. I'm 10 yrs out of Back Surgery from a Herinaited Disc. And I have NEVER heard from Any Dr. That was involved in MY Care that there is a Muscle called a Psoas and or Sacroiliac joint!!! Thank-You Dr. Berg for such a UNDERSTANDABLE VIDEO on the Psoas and the IMPORTANT PART THEY PLAY! I even did physical therapy AND Still know one said ANYTHING like this! I was given a diagram of Exercises and that was it. Then therapy ended and I was still in PAIN (lower Back/Hip) This Video did more for ME than the on an off therapy and Shots! Thank you Dr. Berg!

Janaline D. Same here. I didn't have surgery, but have been to physical therapy for back, hip, pelvis pain. I was told to work to strengthen my core... but that didn't bring relief, it made it worse. Finally I found a chiropractor who diagnosed the tightness in my psoas muscle. So happy to find this video to help with other stretches to assist in pain relief and understanding the mechanisms that aren't working as they should be and why.

Janaline D. I, unfortunately, had an unsuccessful surgery called the Ifuse which basically means my pelvis is fused with three titanium rods; huge mistake. I've lived in pain for the past two years and five months in my calf and foot, ten times worse than the actual back pain itself. I agree with you, I just learned of this muscle this week because no Dr has ever mentioned this to me. They all tell me I have sciatica although I continue to tell them that the symptoms don't add up, now I know why.

i have a herniated disc in my neck from a serious surfing compression accident. Never would I trust a doctor to fix it. you live with chronic pain on no medication. Yoga, and healthy lifestyle is the only way. I cant afford accupuncture or that would be the only other option.

This is gold. I have been searching for a fix to my Psoas. I have been stretching, releasing all somewhat helpfull but not fixing. This fixed it. now my stretch and strengthen maintain. I couldnt drive I was in so much pain whenI sat for any period of time.

You may say you wish you learned what he is teaching in school, but what you are missing is how much education and studying actually goes into understanding that concept and breaking it down in an easy way for the consumer to comprehend. That's also one muscle. One muscle combining with another muscle; your iliacus, to form the complex iliopsoas. Now to learn the hundreds of other muscles and their roles in your body. I don't think you meant anything by it, but learning some of that material requires real ambition. The amount of people who drop out or switch majors because they can't pass a basic anatomy course is pretty ridiculous. Most of us who have spent that time studying didn't do so out of greed. You should aim your hate towards big pharma companies, because they are the ones who are limiting real holistic wellness in the United States. Also, the United States focuses too much and uses too many resources on caring for disease instead of preventing it. There may be a correlation there with big pharma companies if you really think about it

So this really hit home for me. I have had three back surgeries including a double level ALIF fusion. When my left side back and hip were tight I had this odd pain in my low left abdomen which was exactly where you pushed on your patient. I always thought it was my surgical scar pain but it makes sense since I have many issues with tight hips and glutes. Thanks so much you are a great resource.

You can do this stretch on the edge of your bed. If you have a bad lower back, tight psoas muscles could be the cause. Driving can really aggravate lower back pain because of the awkward position of your extended right leg. Do this stretch before and after long trips for relief.

Some of the most valuable information right here. People sit too much (laziness) or do too many sit ups for the glory muscles without working on stabilization (vanity.). As I type this he touched on that very thing in the video. I was cured of chronic pain and sciatica by learning to massage my psoas.

Probably some form of principle of reciprocal inhibition. So he’s working on the strong side to activate the weak side. More often the so-called strong side is just compensating for the weak side and taking over. And the strong sides’ rigidity/restrictions is misinterpreted by us as our strength.

Dr. Berg, great video! I started to incorporate stretching in my hip flexors on a routine basis as I sit a lot for work, which as I found out is a killer on your hip flexors. Since routinely stretching my hip flexors my dead lifts and squats have dramatically improved, I'm not so tight in my hips and have more control, flexibility and better form while lifting.

I’m a Pilates instructor who tried this on my own using a tennis ball on my stomach and a firmer massage ball on my glutes. It worked wonders. Now my hips are even. The scoliosis is reduced, i feel balanced, and best of all the pinched ache I bore for the last few years (nothing else worked) is gone. This explains my lower back pain I’ve had for almost a year and a half. All symptoms are there (explained in another video). My last job was a sit down job, in a raised chair where my feet didn’t reach the floor or the foot stool well so my feet were never flat. I did the leg raise test. I’m sure my legs/thighs barely raised two inches off the floor. I’m sure having an anterior pelvic tilt hasn’t helped either.

Nice one Sir, though I personally would keep the pelvis balanced by putting my hand on the right side of the pelvis as you are asking him to let the left leg hang down the side of the couch. 1. That's more effective and 2. the client feels safer and can relax into the stretch.

THANK YOU Dr. Berg! You just saved me another trip to the Osteopath! Last time I went, his manipulation was quite painful, but I got out of there like new! Until one day when vacuum cleaning it went back to the usual pain. The vacuum cleaner and I have a love and hate relationship for a while now! Because of covid I have been dreading to go back and tried to do the exercises the doctor told me but it didn't work! So I did all by myself, what you show on this video and it worked for me. This was a really great video. The testing is essential and something I was somewhat unfamiliar about. The treatment portion reminds me of Trigger point in massage therapy. However, with the psoas and glute I prefer to use knuckles (for glutes) and/or mid-digital knuckles (for psoas) instead of fingertips because the applied pressure can be more evenly and effectively controlled. Additionally, for massage therapists particularly, the therapist can save wear and tear on the joints in their hands.

(A question at the end) Osteitis pubis! Discovered in Italy in the 1940s and even still little known in the US, as it is a lateral movement injury that is uncommon in US football and baseball. In Italy, it was found among fencers and soccer players, as their sports involve more lateral movement. The gist of the injury is that a weakened pubic joint generates inflammation that also weakens the origins of the adductor muscles at the pubic joint, making them more susceptible to being torn away. From personal experience, I (and several others) know that this injury's snapping separation can be audible across a soccer field! For several months, as the adductors atrophied, I could feel a band running diagonally inside the abdomen, which I presume was the psoas having to now serve a double role of hip flexion and lateral stability of the leg. It no longer creates any sensation. Today there is no obvious evidence of the injury from the way I walk, and I can even walk up steep mountain paths, but no more rock climbing! My question: with the psoas having to do double duty, is there any way to assess and maintain balance of the pair?

Just to add to this good presentation: If one of the upper thoracic vertebrae is misaligned, it can affect the strength of the gluteus max muscle on the same side, as that vertebra is part of the 'chain of strength' needed to extend the leg, thereby inhibiting the gluteus max . There are often alternate reasons for there being weakness, as everything in the body is coordinated, and cooperative.

I had what felt like a pinched nerve for like 3-4 months and I bet that is my problem. I was a triathlete for 5 years and had to stop immediately due to a very unexpected pregnancy. Oh my goodness! It felt like my back was stuck when I removed the foam roller from my back, but it stretched the psoas! It feels better already! Thank you so much! :)

Awesome info, Doctors please redirect pasients to muscle and joint experts rather than experimenting on people. Kiropractors or Naprapats first, then osteopats an physcisists. However creds to doctors for other haelth issues

That’s very good! Thank you! I have a client with a very stubborn PSOAS pain and no matter what I and my chiropractor do, it’s never 100%. I’ll try your technique on her and see if works. I already worked the PSOAS like you showed here, already used the stretching technique dropping the leg from the edge of the table, and many other exercises. She gets some relief after the work I do, but when she’s back a week later, the pain still there. Only one thing I didn’t do was testing the PSOAS strength, thank you for sharing. She did have a knee replacement 9 months ago, which is not helping to release the tension on the good side that’s taking all the weight from her body as she’s being walking kind of hunched. Not sure if she’ll be able to lift or bend her operated knee like you showed here, perhaps careful and slow. The chiropractor was able to relief great amount of pain lately working really hard on the PSOAS, seems to be improving, but still not 100%. Forgot to mentioned that she’s also going for physical therapy. Like I said, it’s a very stubborn pain! 😅 Thank you again, and have a blessed day!

Slowly slowly I am starting to understand the weakness and pain in my legs (especially when I work in the garden; this triggers pain, and it is difficult to get out of my chair at night). I will be seeing my chiro on 23/10/2024 and have sent her your link. A previous chiro pushed down through my intentines to the pelvis, on both sides, and both sides were excrutiatingly painful. Your video got me thinking, that most chiros push on the trigger points on BOTH sides, without TESTING to see which side is compromised (weaker or tighter). Does it matter if both sides are stimulated (via the abdomen or lower back trigger points) , instead of working on the stronger side? Thank you in anticipation : )

58? Oh goodness brother Rick, I certainly wish you to gett better. I recently rebegun Sciatic pain with plantar fascitus. I started PT however when I asked my PTt about the Psoas muscle I was shot down and given a vague watery explanation. Im getting better by virtue of yt videos excercises.

Excellent detailed explanation of therapy for this area. It is generally ignored in terms of treatment of low back pain. Dr. Berg can you offer a discussion of treatment if the sacroiliac joint? Interested in seeing how treatment of pain in that area coincides with treatment of the psoas. Thanks.

Could this be the cause of CPPS/prostatitis?, i am at 28% body fat overweight been suffering with cpps for the past 7 months, urologist told me it wasn´t prostatits no bacterial infection whatsoever.

martin q dear friend, I am a doctor myself and my brother suffered from cp/ cpps . Nothing seems to have worked .. He even took anti tubercular drugs. In the end I forced him to go to a psychiatrist .. And he got some meds for chronic pain. They were mostly anti depressants and it worked like magic.. Try visiting one. Ur quality of life will improve I hope so. May God keep u healthy

We did an insane amount of low crawls one day for pt(marine corps workouts) and I felt extremely sore in my psoas muscles like never before. I did a deep very long stretch like the first one presented here except I was facing the opposite way with my stomache down at a slight angle and it relieved all the tension.

I need you in my life Dr Berg. I’ve struggled with lower back pain for most of my life since beginning work as a concreter, have seen Chiro’s, Physio’s and Osteopath’s without any long term relief, have changed my profession due to the pain becoming too much to bare and continuing with all treatments until recently stopping all treatments because they were ineffective. I guess pain and discomfort will just continue to be a part of my life :(

I had a hell of a time finding a chiropractor to help me lift my leg. FINALLY I found someone that knew how to help me with my psoas. I moves away unfortunately but when I really need him I travel 4 hours to see him.

This procedure worked immediately for me to relieve stiffness pain in left side and bad posture (slumped over). I could run walk without discomfort. When I put the foam under my butt I could feel the tightness in my right psoas which actually shortens my stride when I walk (I never noticed that before). But I don't understand why the stiffness comes back when I sit down for awhile at dinner or when driving. I just started doing the stretches. Does it eventually become a permanent fix.?

I think that the point is that if you keep doing movements or postures that produce a negative effect, you must necessarily keep doing the movements and postures that counteract those negative effects. Since we are not statues, our bodies will always dynamically reflect our behaviour and habits. That is why people practice things such as yoga constantly.

I can't believe how quickly it worked!!!! Did the test of pressing the knee on the bent leg. The side that hurts was terribly weak and gave pain when I pressed on the knee. Didn't think I knew what I was doing when pressing the soft tissue, did it anyway. Tested again. The hurting side was now as strong as the other side WITHOUT PAIN!!!!!

Went grocery shopping. Took my cane "in case". Didn't use it once. Did not use a go cart either. Spent a long leisurely time in a Supercenter where there is a lot of walking to do. Came home, unloaded the groceries, been walking around the house -- STILL PAIN FREE! I have my life back! God Bless you, Dr. Berg!

Thank you so much for this amazing video! I think I just discovered the root of so many of the imbalances I have in my body after my second pregnancy. I have been instinctually massaging the tight spots in my gluteals and doing most of the stretches in one form or another, but the deep massage on the opposite side was a complete revelation for me! The difference after only a minute or two of stimulation was astonishing! Thank you again for this wonderful information 🙏🧡💛💜

thanks for the video. ive had muscle tightness for awhile there. I can feel there is a muscle there but i never knew what it was called or function. Got it by dropping down into a squat too quick instead of slowly descending down.

I think it would be helpful to explain the difference between "weak" vs inhibited. To achieve results that easily implies functional inhibition, not true weakness.

Thanks, as always, great info. Struggling a LOT with one side -- pain on long standing, pain on lying down... wakes me up some nights... Interestingly, I apply my "shiatsu massager" to my lower back trying to mollify the ilio-psoas... And it works. You just taught me WHY and HOW it works... Now I will expand out my ... dealing with it ... to address BOTH sides... (Yeah, I sit all the time; computer and work bench, work bench then computer...) Used a 'saddle stool' chair for several years, which helped me learn to sit erect; but then my 'hip' began to hurt too much. But the 'normal' chair only helps sometimes...
